Raffi Torres gets 41 games

JEEBUS - that's putting the foot down - glad to see the NHL showing some cojones. Wonder if that will continue.

The next cheap shot by someone will amount to a 2-3 game suspension, if they even get that much. This is an anomaly for suspensions due to Torres having many prior suspensions, fines, and warnings. Hopefully this is an example of how they will hand out suspensions for cheap shots but, I really doubt it.

Wow a new NHL-record breaking suspension for a pre-season game...but that's good!
Too many thugs out there on ices who're only aiming for heads of players....

A lot of time for him to think about what he did.

In a couple years is slate is wiped clean so he can go back to being a d-bag.

His slate WAS wiped clean before this one. He's NOT defined as a repeat offender under the terms of the current CBA as the last suspension was more than 18 months ago. However, the CBA does allow "even if a player is not defined as a repeat offender, his past history may come into consideration when determining future supplemental discipline."

I agree that this is more about the player than the play. If that hit is worth any more than a couple of games on its own, I need to find a new favorite sport.

Well deserved for Raffi Torres. Sad that he hasn't learned his lesson. Totally lack of respect for his fellow colleagues, even though it's a competitive sport.

NHL doesn't want to deal with another Bertuzzi-Moore lawsuit. Plus with head shots and concussions being a hot issue nowadays, I totally understand the harsh penalty for Torres.

SJ should just release him or buy him out after his suspension. Hope it's his last contract in the NHL.

Predatory head shot, in the preseason no less. It's time to tell this guy to go flip burgers for the rest of his pathetic life. 9 times this guys has been disciplined in some manner and all of them for head shots. What else do they need to ban this guy? Another player with a life long brain injury, broken skull or neck? Paralyzed? This guy is never going to learn or change, just sickening.

Pretty much agree with this. Except that I think he may learn from it or just feel the sting maybe as $445K is a significant sum of cash to this douchebag.

What sad is that the NHL let it get to 9 incidents. How many chances do you have to give a guy? NHLPA or not, this guy should have been booted from the league long ago.
3 Times targeting the head it more then enough to kick this d-bag out of the league.

Don't forget Raffi came up and that was part of the game his coaches and front office wanted him to play. When he knocked Michalek out a few years back it was touted as a big hit everywhere except SJ. The thing that has always bothered me is Raffi could've been a goal scorer on a 1st or 2nd line but not many people as tough as him and willing to hit. For the 9 or so that everyone rips on him for, he has a TON of legal big hits. Its all a matter of timing and placement and if you ever played the game its a heck of a lot faster than a tv angle in slow motion. Imagine Scott Stevens played now adays? Wow.
That being said He has to be smarter and based on the Stoll BS suspension he has to know that no matter what he will guilty at this point. Dude is a great guy off the ice for sure with his teammates and to the fans.

he can have all the legal hits he wants, he still has many illegal hits. He plays on the edge, but now the line has shifted. I personally think he is a douchebag and they just want him to go away.

hope we never hear about him again.

Even on a more basic level, isn't Torres totally out of position? And going for that hit would put him even further out of position? He's a LW and the check would leave him deep on the RW defensive side. He left the player who he was supposed to mark, hence in part of the video, you can see the Ducks dman #2 raises his stick to signal that Torres has left him open.

It looks to me that if Torres was where he was supposed to be, the loose puck would have ended up on his stick and it would have turned into a 2 on 2, 1 on 1, or even an odd man rush/breakaway.
