TORONTO -- Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo had to part ways with the team's longest-serving player to land an elite talent like Rudy ***.

Toronto traded fan favourite and trusted veteran point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis to the Memphis Grizzlies for *** and centre Hamed Haddadi.

The deal was confirmed Wednesday while Toronto was taking on the Hawks in Atlanta.

"Players like this don't come along that often in terms of their availability," Colangelo said of ***. "This was a very unique circumstance. We feel like we took advantage of it."

Toronto is also sending a second-round draft choice in 2013 and cash considerations to the Grizzlies, who are flipping Calderon to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for forwards Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.

Calderon has played his entire NBA career in Toronto. The six-foot-three Spaniard joined the team in the 2005-06 season and has played in 525 games, averaging 10.0 points and 7.2 assists per game.

Calderon, who was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, was surprised by the move.

"It's been my home for eight years," Calderon said in Atlanta, where the Raptors were taking on the Hawks, shortly before leaving the arena. "I've done everything possible for this team. It's tough. The fans have been with me since Day 1. It's tough."

Davis was Toronto's 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. In his two seasons, Davis has averaged 7.0 points and 6.9 rebounds mostly in a reserve role, although he has started several games this year with Andrea Bargnani and Jonas Valanciunas out with injuries.

***, the Grizzlies' leading scorer, has been the subject of trade speculation throughout the season as Memphis looks to unload his hefty max contract. The six-foot-eight small forward is due US$16.5 million this season with $37 million more over the next two years.

Davis, who has two more seasons left on his deal, is set to make $3.1 million next season.

The 26-year-old *** has been with the Grizzlies since joining the NBA in 2006. He has averaged 17.9 points and 5.8 rebounds over seven seasons.

Haddadi is the first Iranian-born player in the NBA. The seven-foot-two centre has averaged 2.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 6.1 minutes in 134 career outings, all with Memphis.

For Memphis, trading away *** eases a luxury tax hit due next season, while concentrating the team around centre Marc Gasol and all-star forward Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies had their best playoff run in 2011 when they knocked off then-No. 1 seed San Antonio before losing to Oklahoma City in seven games in the Western semifinals -- all with *** on the bench after needing season-ending shoulder surgery.

New Grizzlies owner Robert Pera took over the franchise last November and has quickly started addressing the team's salary situation.

"We are excited to add three players who bring with them a tremendous amount of value to our team and have achieved incredible success on the pro, college and Olympic levels," Memphis GM Chris Wallace said in a statement. "In these players, we welcome NBA Champion and Olympic gold medallist Tayshaun Prince, as well as up-and-coming athletic forwards Ed Davis, who won an NCAA title at North Carolina, and Austin Daye."

Just over a week ago, the Grizzlies sent valuable reserve Marreese Speights and two other players to Cleveland in a move that cleared $6.4 million in salary and avoided a $4 million luxury tax hit this season.

All told, the Grizzlies will save nearly $40 million over the next three years after the two trades.

Prince and Daye meanwhile have both spent their entire careers with Detroit, and Prince was the last link to the proud championship team of 2003-04.

"Trading a player like Tayshaun Prince, who has meant so much to our organization and contributed to our championship success, is never easy," Pistons president Joe Dumars said in a statement. "We want to thank Tayshaun for his professionalism and contributions over the last 10 years. We also appreciate everything that Austin Daye has done for our team both on and off the court over the past three-plus years."

Prince, a 32-year-old forward who was drafted by the Pistons in the first round in 2002, is averaging 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season.

"Shocked obviously," Prince said after the Pistons played the Pacers. "I didn't find out, obviously, until I got here. I'm shocked, but it's a business and you never know what's going to happen."

Calderon is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists this season for the Raptors (16-29), who are desperately trying to scratch their way into the playoff picture. Toronto is in 11th place after losing to Atlanta 93-92, 8 1/2 games behind Boston for the eight seed.

"Hard to write this tweet now. Thanks for all these years of support, thanks for everything raptors fans. Thanks TO for made me feel like home," Calderon tweeted after the trade was finalized.

Davis also thanked the Raptors and Toronto on Twitter.

"I will always consider Toronto my home and the Raptor nation as my extended family. I feel very blessed to have had this experience here," he said.

Calderon and Davis had both been starting for the Raptors, but they do have Kyle Lowry waiting in the wings at point guard and likely see ***'s scoring punch as the key to vaulting back into the discussion in a mediocre conference.

Coach Dwane Casey will have to deal with a bit of a log jam with ***, DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross, Landry Fields and Alan Anderson as wing players with similar skill sets. But getting a player with ***'s natural scoring talent, even at the expense of parting with a valued player like Calderon, proved too enticing to pass up.

"Hopefully this team is back to the playoffs as soon as possible," Calderon said.

Love this trade for a Raptors point of view since the Raptors have been lacking a big time closer ever since Vince left. The sky really is the limit for Rudy and he has shown in the past the ability to be the man and this is just an off year he is having. A change of scenery should rejuvenate him. I just wonder what's next on the table b/c now they are stacked at the wing position with Derozan, Rudy, Anderson and T Ross. I don't think Collangelo is done by a long shot and there's always the pending situation of Bargnani to deal with.

good trade, but unfortunately, the raptors are still young (and terrible). that said, rudy is a great player.

They need some excitment for the fans. According to an interview with Big Brian it looks like Andrea is on the way out as well. Lets hope they get faster, more athletic and a whole lot more exciting.

I hope that now that they have Rudy *** they'll at least start getting some calls. I can't recall a team getting as few calls as the Raps do. It has been brutal this season.

The log jam isn't with the four players mentioned (Derozan, Gay: starting, and Ross and Anderson coming off of the bench. The issue is with Kleiza and Fields who don't really have a true spot in this rotation.

With Jonas still out, in the short term, I feel the Raptors are worse off. They will have to be giving Aaron Gray significant minutes, and play Amir at the 4, or play Amir at the 5, and put Landry Fields out of position at the 4. They are also really weak at the point guard position as I don't think John Lucas is a quality bench play to be playing 12-20 minutes a night.

I would love to see the Raptors trade Bargnani, there are some rumors about him going to Utah, but they will get next to nothing back for him right now. If they can't trade him, the team should strongly consider using their amnesty buyout on him. If not they need to buyout either Kleiza or Fields.

How much money do they have tied up in like four players? They've screwed themselves with this trade as they are now handcuffed and just under the cap.

I was happy with Calderon being dealt but Ed Davis hurts. Sad to see him go.

$127 Million in ***, Lowry, Bargnani, and Derozan. But they can get out of the relatively tight cap crunch with one or two moves.

i have a fealing someone or a few of the wing players will be packaged with bargs for a big man. bargs seams like the odd man out on this team

They suck and continue to suck. They sick at the draft even worse then the Leafs. They had the first over all pick plus other top 5 picks and they screwed that up. They had stars in carter, mcgrady and bosh and let them all go without getting anything back worth squat. No stars will sign to go there so this is their only real option. They are also trying to move Bargnani. They are getting more athletic and exciting....they can't suck any worse.

horrible really?? He inherited a **** team. bargs was a flop sure but the only players who would have turned out better were aldrige (they allready had bosh) rudy *** who was very raw and rajon rondo who everyone passed on. He came to toronto in 2006 and got manager of the year in 2007

Looking back they should have gone with Aldrige (the only other real option at the time) but how was he to know Bosh would leave. Bargs is a 7 foot silky shooter those guys dont come around too often he could still be a valuable piece yet. LA would love to have him I will tell you that.

He failed on the hibbert trade.. he shoulda kept him

Demar Derozen is having a much improved year. they would probably rather have ty lawson or definantaly jrue holiday but they needed a SG desperatly for the season ahead.

Ed davis I never really understood this pick but this draft year has hardly any talent past the 10th pick. vasquez was a steal at 28th and bledsoe sliped down to 18th other than that there is noone.

His Valencunes pick is looking very nice. This guy is a stud waiting to happen..maybe he shoulda taken kemba walker instead but kemba really only had a few good games his whole college carrer.

Terence Ross this year was kinda outa nowhere. I think most thought he would take drummond. Drummond is having a nice year and I would probably pull the trigger on a trade straight up but I am not sold on him yet. I think Terence Ross has the ability to be an allstar and besides toronto have bought in on valencunes.

This team has alot of good young pieces and Colangelo wants a champion not a contender. he knows that takes time. i say finish lottery this year even though the draft is weak. that way they pickup another young piece. 2013-2014 make the playoffs and gel as a team. Then go sign someone to push you over the top.

Colangelo is one of the best in the business he has a plan. He is not going to panic and try to make the playoffs right now he is building a champion.

Collangelo won executive of the year as Raptors GM in his first year I believe and won it another team when he was in Phoenix. Clearly he knows what he's doing and I've heard him talk on the radio and on tv on several occasions and he is a very rational and intelligent person.

Any GM will make bad trades and make bad picks and the only bad thing I have to say about Collangelo is his attraction to Europeans in the draft. Not really a bad thing, but I don't know why he's so attracted to them. Bargnani is what he is and he was developing finally last year until he had all those injury problems and in all honesty I don't think that was a bad pick b/c who else from that draft is making a major impact? Aldrige, ***, Rondo, who else is there?

Actually, Collangelo is probably aware that he made a mistake picking Bargnani and that's why he had his eye on *** for such a long time and got Lowry this year who was also in the same draft.

The bottom line is if Collangelo was such an awful GM, he would have gotten the boot already, but I think he is going to be extended and finally has this team going in the right direction. *** looks like an absolute beast and is showing leadership skills as well and he looks to be what Vince could have been. Here's crossing my fingers!

PG Lowry
SG Derozen/T. Ross/Alan Anderson
SF ***/T. Ross/Landry Fields
PF Bargs/Amir Johnson/Fields
C Valencunes/Amir Johnson

I dont know about you but I am so glad to finally have a roster resembling an NBA team. They are a little light at PF and are desperate for a back up PG. If Valencunes turns out to be the beast he should and bargs ever takes his head out of his butt maybe draft a PF this year who will be ready to play a few minutes right away that would make our bigs atleast mid of the pack. we allready have nice wings that can score and defend *** is one of the best already and derozen/ross both have allstar potential. All we will need is a star PG free agent in two years and raps are set.

In summary I say we need a star PG and get a player like ed davis back. He has two drafts to find a decent big man and two years to lure a big name PG. Then T. is set to make a run in the playoffs in 2014-2015.

If the draft was that weak then he should have traded the pick. He loves Euro guys but they are not panning out so great. He has a disadvantage that stars just don't want to play in Toronto, they all want to be in the US. He loss Bosh, he should have just traded him before the deadline, same as the Raptors did with Carter and McGrady (not Brian I know).

He finally seems to be getting it together. I like some of the young guys, I think Ross could be really good. At least now they are stating to resemble an NBA team not a bunch of bench or rejects from other teams. They have Rudy now which adds some semi star potential and some excitement for the fans. They only got him because his contract was hard to move and the Raptors have room. They need to move Bargnani soon. Let him play a few games now that he is back, pad his scoring as much as possible and ship him out.

That player exists in this draft. Anthony Bennett is a 6'8 240lbs. power forward, and the best part is he is from Brampton Ontario. The problem is that unless the Raptors get a top-3 pick or make the playoffs they won't be drafting in the first round this year. They traded the pick (with those protections) to Houston in the Kyle Lowry trade. Houston then traded the pick to Oklahoma City in the James Harden deal, like they need to get any better.

Thanks for the info...that is too bad but not the end of the world it is kinda a weak draft. Maybe Acey will pan out.

One more thing about colangelo he is not afraid to mix it up. Also I am sure he woulda loved to get some value back for bosh. Probably not too many takers willing to give anything decent back.
