I understand that the Leafs need a goalie now but not sure I am happy about them giving away Rask. Even with Pogge in the system I still would have rathered they hold on to both Rask and Pogge or get a sure fire 1st goalie in return. IMO Raycroft is not a great trust worthy pickup.

I don't mind that they got Raycroft but IMO dealing Rask was a big mistake.
They should held onto Rask and then bring him up in a couple of years. So I would say Tellqvist should be traded soon.

i think it's a good pickup. pogge is a better prospect than rask and no one knows how rask is going to do in the coming years and his stock might drop. the leaf's were desperate for a starting goalie and i think they did pretty good not giving up anyone on their starting roster.

question is what is boston going to do with toivonen, rask and thomas? i think they'll have a similar situation as they had this year with 3 guys that can start and then wind up dealing the one that ****s the most lol.

leaf's also going after giguere or nabokov would not have been a wise move. first off giguere would have come at a much higher cost and nabokov looked downright bad last year behind a team with a solid defence.

all in all, i am happy and hopefully this is the first in a string of decent moves for jfj. he certainly needs some!

Gotta disagree John... Rask was touted as a top goalie prospect for 2-3 years by several different analysts and scouting agencies. Pogge on the other hand, well, my opinion is that he had a great WJC tournament in 2006. That was the first and pretty much the last that anybody's heard of him. I think holding onto Rask, who seemed to have been much more consistent rather than a one-hit-wonder, over Pogge.

JFJ once again bows to public pressure (or internal pressure) to mortgage the future in order to compete now. The smarter money (especially in Toronto knowing you're going to sell out 82 games a year anyways), would be to build a tenacious young team around the guys that won all those games at the end of the regular season and have Maurice mould them into true NHL competitors. Instead, it looks like they're sticking with the washed up vets that stumbled their way through 65 games for a less-than-stellar record.

Now don't get me wrong, Raycroft still has the potential to be a good goalie (and ALOT better than Belfour was in his last season with TO) but not behind the Leafs defenseless defense corps.

Leafs get absolutely pillaged in this trade.

we need to wait and see and remember that the leaf's d played well when aubin was is net. it would have been smart for the leaf's to go
young and rebuild, but would the fans in the city embrace such a process??

personally, i would have since i am a hockey fan and i just want to watch a team that competes. but raycroft wasn't given a fair shot in boston and you can't really call him a washede up veteran. he's only 26 and has only 1 bad season behind him and that was his sophomore season so he is by no means washed up or anything to that matter.

i don't think JFJ really bowed to any pressure either and he made this trade knowing raycroft was available and wanted to land him and i don't think it was that big of a loss in rask. sure he is hot prospect, but how many hot goalie prospects flop??

I think it was a bad move. I really liked Rask from seeing him in Grand Forks and what I saw on tv in Vancouver. I like him a bit more then Pogge, I have seen Pogge play a dozen times against the Wheaties and while I was in Calgary and I really like him. I guess the best part is I can like Rask a lot more now since he isn't a Leaf :D

Hard to guage.... if Rask wouldn't sign with Toronto for whatever reason then its a great move for Toronto. If they just wanted to get someone else instead I think its a bad move.... easy as that... no one will ever know for sure what the reason for trading him was though, but, we all know that he hadn't signed with Toronto yet!

Rod

good point you got there rod. the leaf's might have jumped the gun in dealing rask, but we needed a goalie with more proven nhl experience than what we have and raycroft is definitely better than what we have now. isn't that the key in any trade? improving your team? can't disagree with me here that JFJ has most certainly done that..

Only time will tell on this deal. If Raycroft comes out and is a stone wall, all of the Leafs nation will not even remember who Rask is. Raycroft is young and could have a ton of good years left. I just think people in Toronto are so used to bad moves that they expect every move is horrible...which this one COULD turn out to be, but I think it is too early to say that yet. Prospects are tough to gauge and it is a guessing game a lot of the time....the success Rask has had at his current level, might not necessarily translate into NHL success.

I guess I will expand on my initial thoughts. I don't think Raycroft is a goalie that can backstop the Leafs to the Cup. Get them into the playoffs - possibly, but not much else. As it stood before the trade, the Leafs already had a tandem of goalies that could likely get them into the same position.

Likely this is intended as a short term move to keep the net warm for Pogge, which is my other concern. Pogge looks like a promising goalie, but its not like the AHL isn't littered with other promising goalies as well. Recently, Finland has been churning out elite goalies as much as any country, and I think the Leafs may have traded away the player who was further away from an NHL career, but who might have been better in the long run.

Of course, its not like the Leafs ever look towards the long run.

Ok heres some things running through my mind (pros and cons).... coming from a die-hard Leaf fan who has missed at most 10 games TOTAL the last 5 years:

- I don't mind Raycroft as a goalie. He was extremely solid a couple years ago. Hopefully he rebounds.

- The price was high. Like I said I don't mind Raycroft... I'm just not too excited with what we gave up.

- He's young (26) and very affordable (1.3M). So he'll fit PERFECTLY in the cap.

- Rask was still unsigned

- The Leafs are high on Pogge. His stock has soared since he was drafted. Re-do that exact draft and Pogges likely a top 10 pick.

- Leafs can't develop 2 goalies at once (i.e Rask & Pogge on Marlies).

- Raycroft had worse #'s then Belfour last season

So theres everything running through my head in a nutshell. Like I said, I have nothing against going with Raycroft (he's young, cheap and talented) it's whether or not Rask comes back to bite us in the butt.

Raycroft= Calder trophy winner
Rask= Unproven at NHL level

Raycroft was injured last season and never got it going because Toivonen and Thomas came in and played lights out for them.
I like this trade, I think Raycroft will rebound nicely in TO and Pogge is still a prospect who isn't ready for prime time just yet.
As someone said earlier you can't develop two goal prospects at the same time. I think the Leafs assessed that and decided Rask was expendable.
Before you all dump on the Leafs for letting a prospect go, yet again, lets give them a little credit for having the asset to trade for Raycroft.

Dan.

Great move by both teams!!! Bostons crease was too crowded and Toronto didn't have a number 1 NHL goalie. I think Raycroft will look great in the blue and white and he is a goalie they can build around for the next 3-4 years till Pogge is ready. Sure Rask could be a star, but he also could never play an NHL game. Great deal for both sides. I'm liking the leafs more and more. Here's hoping that McCabe doesn't finally sign that contract!!!

leafs needed a goalie now ,today, not some prospect that went mid 1st round that will be ready 6 years from now,who knows rask could die in a car accident and everyone would then jump ship and say "oh they should of traded him when they had the chance",smart move for ferguson, didn't cave ,he just filled a whole that needed filling, raycroft can still be top 10 goalie now he dosen't have someone looking over his shoulder and he is out of the sindens hell hole they call boston

PEOPLE PUT WAY TO MUCH FAITH IN UNPROVEN BOYS THAT TAKE 5 YEARS TO GET IN THE NHL HEY WES ALL I CAN SAY IS MILAN KRAFT,DAIGLE AND BRENDL,HURME ALL GONNA BE SUPERSTARS NOW THEY SHOULD BE BAGGING GROCERIES

DOSEN'T CALDER TROPHY WINNER MEAN ANYTHING

It could go either way - Raycroft could come back and play brilliant, or he could be a complete bomb. Same with Rask, who's probably still a couple years away. I think Toronto could have given up less and still got Raycroft from Boston. JFJr. must either still be high on Tellqvist or is planning on moving him to address a different need.

Sure, Calder Trophy winner means something. It means he had a great rookie year. Everybody's saying Raycroft has only had one bad year, but he's only had one GOOD year too.
The Leafs D isn't exactly their strong point and I don't put much stock into them playing well for one goalie rather than another. It really was the team full of young pluggers that hustled and played hard for 60 minutes that won them the string of games down the stretch, not necessarily great goaltending.
Remember, Jim Carey won the Vezina... Where is he now?
Obviously, no one knows just how good Rask is going to be at the NHL level, same with Pogge, but it's still up in the air if Raycroft can get back to the level he was at in 03-04 as well.
Based on what I know, Rask is highly regarded by several resources and has been for a long time. Pogge came out of nowhere and had one good tournament, but I'd be very wary of basing a potential NHL scouting report on one tournament. Raycroft was hurt for a bit, true, but he did get 30 games last season. That's a decent share for a guy who was hurt. Only problem is, he only won 8 of them. It's not like Raycroft played well when healthy last year and he ultimately lost the starter's job by being out-played rather than just being injured. Raycroft was healthy when Tim Thomas was decided on as the starter when Toivonen went down. He's been blasted for being ineffective with the new rules on padding and was only expendable because an injured Hannu Toivonen and AHL veteran Tim Thomas were deemed more valuable.

Bottom line, it'll probably be years before we know the true winner and loser of this trade. All we have now is opinions and my opinion is that the Leafs overpaid. They overpaid for Kaberle and they'll likely overpay for McCabe. Leaf fans are used to it after years of overpaying for tickets. :D

Can tell you don't follow the WHL. Pogge was brilliant all season, not good, brilliant!

Can tell he doesn't follow hockey

He said the Leafs over paid for Kaberle.... yeah, a 27 year old top 2 defenceman who has just entered his prime tied up for 5 years at $4.25 Million!

Thats almost steal like. Compare that too Norstrom signed for $4M.... Boucher 3.5M, Hamrlik 3.5M, etc. Watch what some UFA get this offseason (i.e Mckee, Kubina, Skrastins, etc). It will make Kaberles deal look even better.

No matter how much you hate the Leafs they did not overpay for Kaberle. Not in the least... especially with the cap at $44 million next season.
