Red Wings part ways with Blashill, multiple assistants

The Detroit Red Wings will not renew the contracts of head coach Jeff Blashill, assistant coach Doug Houda, and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko, the team announced Saturday.

Blashill has been head coach of the Red Wings for the past seven seasons. The club made the playoffs in his first campaign behind the bench but fell in the first round and has not been back since.

Detroit has been undergoing a rebuild, mainly starting after Steve Yzerman was named general manager in 2019. Despite making strides with a young roster, the Red Wings still finished in 25th place in the NHL this season.

Blashill ends his tenure in Detroit with a 204-261-72 record.

Seven years was way too long. Hopefully with a new coach they can start to move forward.
