Redraft Your Team

Couple buddies and myself ended up talking hypotheticals over some beers last night and thought this would be a good topic. Take your team and look over their first round draft picks for the last 15-20 years and see who you would have drafted if they where available.

Now the 2012-2014 picks are tough to do and most wouldn't change as most haven't played yet.

I started to drink more when I compiled the list for the Jets.

If you had taken Zetterberg in the first round, when you could have had him in the 7th, that would have been a bad move. You might have been able to trade down for both the Sedins, and still pick up Zetterberg.

Now for me to review the Penguins first round choices for the last 10 years...

Okay.... I went back as far as 2000 (which is too back, since the 1990s and most of the 1980s are embarrassingly bad, lol)

First round picks. I did not want to name a player that was selected AFTER the Oilers NEXT pick. There are some great late round steals, but when all teams passed on those guys multiple times, I don't think it's something I really want to re-write. That isn't a mistake by my team (necessarily) but rather a mistake by everyone.

I will give the Oilers a "you did well" with each first round pick since 2010:

2009 10 1 Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson

This one is tough for me to criticize. I know when that draft was rolling around, MPS is the player I was hoping they'd draft. Ryan Ellis, Nick Leddy, and Chris Kreider were all selected after him, all would help the team now, but he was also traded off for Perron, who helped the team for a while, so I'm not going to complain.

At the time, I wanted to see the Oilers take Jakub Voracek (who went one pick later than Gagner). Still wich they had done that.

Max Pacioretty went one pick after Nash. PK Subban was selected in the 2nd round.

2006 - No 1st round pick

2005 25 1 Andrew Cogliano
I don't mind this pick still. Niskanen(28) and Vlasic(35) were still on the board, but Cogs was a good player for the Oilers, and the NHL's current iron man (he's never missed a game) is still a good player in Anahime.


2004 14 1 Devan Dubnyk
2004 25 1 Rob Schremp

Could have just kept Dubnyk instead of dumping him, hahahahahaha.

Mike Green(29) and Cory Schneider(26) were still on the board)

2003. The dumbest of all the Oiler drafts. They had the #17 pick, and traded down to #22 (in exchange got the #68 picks as well). JF-Jaques was the 68th picks, and Marc-Antoine Pouliot they got with 22. Who did the Devils take with #17?? Zack Parise......

It still works out okay if they had taken Ryan Kesler(23), or Corey Perry(28), or even Shea Weber(49) instead of Pouliot.

To add insult to the 2003 draft.... the Oilers traded Mike Comrie 30 games into the next season (after a hold out). They were offered Corey Perry & a 1st round pick for him by Anaheim.... after Comrie & his agent basically engineered a trade to the Ducks. Oilers demanded he pay back 2.5 million of the bonues he'd collected, and when he wouldn't - they traded him to Philly for Jeff Woywitka, a 1st, and a 3rd instead


2002 15 1 Jesse Niinimaki

Could have had Cam Ward(25). I think this was the year that the Oilers heard New Jersey was interested in him (and they would have been WAY off the board taking him in round 2) so they reached hard on a guy... and made everyone say "who?"

2001 13 1 Ales Hemsky

He was the best player availble

2000 17 1 Alexei Mikhnov

Terrible pick. Could have had Kronwall(29th)

With the lack of 1st round picks over the pas 15 years - it really is a testament to the Wings and their staff. To be that competitive - especially in the post lockout years is really amazing.

The Habs have their share of draft fails over the years. I'll just keep it limited to the post-2005 lockout era.

2005 - at #5, they really failed here, taking Carey Price. LOL
2006 - #20 - David Fischer, never played a game in the NHL. Two spots later was a kid from the QMJHL with a very Quebecois-sounding name. Bobby Clarke almost forgot it at the podium, probably because he couldn't believe his good fortune: Claude Giroux.
2007 - #12 - Ryan McDonagh. This was actually a spectacular draft selection. Too bad he was traded for Scott Gomez.
2008 - no first round pick - we just had to have Alex Tanguay.
2009 - #18 - Louis Leblanc - hey, if we had taken the guy who went next we could have gone to the Stanley Cup Finals and been slaughtered by the Kings in 2014.
2010 - #22 - Jarred Tinordi - jury is still out here. Justin Faulk has come along pretty well in his young career, though.
2011 - #17 - Nathan Beaulieu - that's just fine.
2012 - #3 - Alex Galchenyuk - no complaints here.
2013 - #25 - Michael McCarron - the big man scored a goal last night.
2014 & 2015 are both still way too early to say.

2001 - Jiri Novotny (22) - This 1st round was pretty rough, and we got Roy & Pominville in the 2nd round, so I'll let them slide here.
Sleeper: Patrick Sharp taken 95th overall

2002 - Keith Ballard (11) & Daniel Paille (20) - Not bad.
Would've rather had: Alex Steen (24) or Duncan Keith (54)
We did draft Dennis Wideman in the 8th round though.

2003 - Thomas Vanek (5) - Can't really complain too much here. However, if you ask me, I would've rather had Parise (17) or Getzlaf (19) or Perry (28)
Sleepers: Pavelski (205), Byfuglien (245), Halak (271), and Elliott (291)

2004 - Drew Stafford (13) - Another pick that isn't bad, but I would've rather had Cory Schneider (26) or Mike Green (29)
Sleeper: Pekka Rinne (258)

2005 - Marek Zagrapan (13) - UGH. To top it off, we nailed it in the 2nd Round with Philip Gogulla
Rather had: Tuukka Rask (21), TJ Oshie (24)
Sleepers: Keith Yandle (105), Niklas Hjalmarsson (108), Patric Hornqvist (230)

2006 - Dennis Persson (24) Another UGH.
Rather had: Nick Foligno (28)
Sleeper: Mathieu Perrault (177)

2007 - No Pick - Traded our 1st plus Jiri Novotny (Former 1st) for Zubrus & Timo Helbling, so I'll rate our 2nd round
2nd Round - Drew Scheistel (59) - We're on fire since '05.
Rather had - Wayne Simmonds (61)
Sleeper: Jamie Benn (129)

2008 - Tyler Myers (12) & Tyler Ennis (26) - Can't complain. Myers won the Calder before he went downhill with us, and I like Ennis.
If I had to say, rather have Erik Karlsson over Myers.
Sleeper: Gustav Nyquist (121)

2009 - Zack Kassian (13) - Not a horrible pick, traded for Hodgson who kind of sucked for us.
Rather had: Chris Kreider (19)
Sleeper: Sami Vatanen (106)

2010 - Mark Pysyk (23) - A pick I like and I hope he hits our lineup soon
Sleepers: Brendan Gallagher (147), Mark Stone (178

2011 - Joel Armia (16) - No longer with the team, but still thought it was a good pick.
Sleepers: Johnny Gaudreau (104), Ondrej Palat (208)

2012 - Mikhail Grigorenko (12) & Zemgus Girgensons (14) - We did good here.

2013 - Rasmus Ristolainen (8) & Nikita Zadorov (16) - Another one I can't really complain too much about, but I would've taken one of these guys over Zadorov:
Curtis Lazar (17), Anthony Mantha (20), or Marko Dano (28)

2014 - Sam Reinhart (2)

2015 - Jack Eichel (2)

The past 2 years you can't really judge on, but I would obviously take Eichel every time, and I like Reinhart as well.

I tried to add in little sleepers for each year. Guys that each team passed on multiple times before finally getting picked, and for the most part, guys any team would welcome onto their team now in a heartbeat.

Yup.... it's not really a 2003 draft thing (involving bad picks) but they turned down a guy from the '03 draft.

Funny enough the 1st round pick they did not receive from Anaheim would have been much higher (9th) in 2004 than the one they got from Philly (25th). 2004 was a weak 1st round though... and Ladislav Smid made his way to Edmonton eventually anyway.


The whole Edmonton / Anaheim trade partner thing get's weirder when you keep going.....

Pronger was traded for Smid (who the Oilers would have got with that '04 pick if they'd made the better deal), Lupol, a first in 2007, and a conditional first rounder (condition was the Ducks getting to the finals within 3 years, which they did).

The '07 pick was traded to Phoenix (who took Nick Ross) along with the Oilers' 2nd rounder.... to move up from 30th & 36th to 21st.... to draft the earlier mentioned Reiley Nash.

The conditional pick ended up turning into Jordan Eberle.




And all of this was before Brian Burke & Kevin Lowe were supposed to fight in a barn.

Really? Wow. I did not know that. Worked out very well for the Ducks eh?

2001-Pascal Leclaire picked at 8 - redraft = Dan Hamhuis or Ales Hemsky
2002-Rick Nash picked at 1 - redraft = no one, if I had to choose, Kari Lehtonen based on them drafting a goalie in 2001. Assuming they wanted a G and since I took a non goalie in the redraft, Lehtonen seems logical.
2003-Nik Zherdev picked at 4 - redraft = Thomas Vanek, Ryan Suter, Jeff Carter(had he been drafted, would he have still hated Columbus?), Brent Seabrook, Ryan Getzlaf, or Corey Perry. Wow, Columbus, wow!:curse:
2004- Alex Picard at 8 - redraft = Cory Schneider or Mike Green
2005- Gilbert Brule picked at 6 - redraft = Anze Kopitar, Marc Staal, Tuuka Rask, or T.J. Oshie. Columbus scouts wanted Kopitar but Doug Maclean's son(bloody son!) mentioned he liked Brule's game. Maclean went with Brule.:duh:
2006-Derick Brassard at 6 - redraft = Claude Giroux
2007- Jake Voracek at 8 - redraft = no one but if I had to choose, Logan Couture, Ryan McDonaugh, or Max Pacioretty
2008- Nikita Filatov at 6 - redraft = Erik Karlsson
2009- John Moore at 21 - redraft = Simon Depres

I havnt been up to date with hockey lately. Is Erik Karlsson a really good Defenceman?
I'd rather have a strong defence over a roster full of Fordwards any day
If he's the better of the 2 I'd let Eberle go and keep Karlsson.
