Rights to RFA to be Halak traded to St. Louis

I've heard somewheres..that the canadiens where interested in Marty Turco....????Will price be going there?

They need to get rid of the million dollar flop....gomez

Well, if the Blues can't sign Halak, they will get at least three first round choice in compensation.

So, three first round choices in return of a prospect (Eller) and a journeyman who might never make it to the NHL (Shultz) seems like a GREAT trade to me...
 
Why don't we wait and see who is actually in the deal? Then maybe wait to; see how these prospects (in the deal) make out; see if St Louis can sign Halak. Then maybe we can evaluate what is happening today. Much like waiting to see if Phaneuf makes a good captain. Notice I didn't call a single person a "hater". :dance:
 
Hilarious, they choose 3 unproven players (price and 2 prospects) over the team MVP last year.

Call it a hot streak but Halak stepped up big time in big big games for the habs. Nice way to repay the best player on your team.

Well, that's what he is, a prospect.

I am not sure you understand how big Halak have become in the city of Montreal and in the province of Quebec. He was the new hero. Kids all want to be Jaro Halak. And the Habs trade that new saviour (I don't say he is, but he was see that way by many many Habs fans) for a prospect and a kid who can do no better than score 50 points as a 20 years old in the CHL (excuse me, but my grand mother could do such...)...

Expect another riot in Montreal...

Well, ultimately, Halak will sign somewhere in the NHL. If it is not in St. Louis, it will be somewhere else. And since Halak is a restricted free agent, the Blues will get a compensation if Halak sign with, say, Philadelphia. This compensation will be three first round draft pick (at least).

I am from Montreal. I think you overestimate what Halak is/was... as in typical Montreal fashion, a player is made out to be a star, bigger than he really is. Remember everyone else since Patrick Roy left that was a star then turned to nothing... everyone from Koivu to Theodore to Kovalev to Price and now Halak it seems.

Also, Eller never played in the CHL.

That's not how it works. That's absolutely wrong information.

St Louis will only get compensation if he accepts another offer from another team and that draft pick compensation is entirely based on how much he gets. And even then, St Louis has the right to match that offer even if Halak accepts the other team's offer. Only way St Louis gets 3 first round picks is if he is signed to something like what Crosby makes (I think it's anything over $5.5M you get the picks). And even then, it has to be a team that possesses ALL of their 1st round picks. So a team like Philly can't make that trade since they gave their 1st round pick to Anaheim, even if they acquire another team's first round pick

This is correct. Compensation depends on what he signs for and if they let him go. I think for it to be one first rounder it has to be over $3 million or something like that and it tiers upward.
 
This just proves that it was not just Mr gainey that thought Price is the future of the Montreal Canadiens,i'm pretty sure there is another 29 GM'S that think the same way.

To quell the discussion over RFA compensation this is how it is set up for this year:

2010 Compensation

* $1,020,348 or below: No compensation.
* $1,020,348 to $1,545,981: A third-round draft choice.
* $1,545,981 to $3,091,963: A second round draft choice.
* $3,091,963 to $4,637,944: A first-round choice and a third-rounder.
* $4,637,944 to $6,183,925: A first- a second- and a third-rounder.
* $6,183,925 to $7,729,907: Two First-round choices, a second-rounder and a third-rounder.
* Over $7,729,907: Four first-rounders.

And has been mentioned St. Louis would have the right to match any contract offer. And as they showed when the Canucks gave an offer sheet to Backes they seem inclined to keep their assets.

With Eller and Schultz being a 1st and a 3rd, maybe the Blues have him pegged as a 3.09 to 4.63 range player.

Eller's a great prospect. Keep in mind this is for the Rights to Halak, The blues can try to sign him or trade those rights away. Montreal wasn't going to send anybody to an Eastern Conferece team. Guess this clears the way for Mason or Turco to platoon with Price next season.

Still would rather have Halak but what can you do?
 
Thanks for clearing that up canucksfreak. Also remember that those compensation picks HAVE to belong to the team. So let's say Philly wants Halak, they have to re-acquire the picks they traded to Anaheim in the Pronger deal. They can't just go and acquire another team's picks in the same round and trade it.

Either way, as far as I'm concerned, Eller is a GREAT prospect.

Gauthier knows more than we do obviously. I'm guessing that they couldn't agree on a $$ deal.
 
I guess LA is the next door to knock on for Philly. Quick looks attractive....Carter will love the party scene in LA, right near his buddy Lupul.
 
If Carter goes to LA for a goalie, I would expect Wayne Simmonds to come back as part of the deal.

I think we're overestimating the value of goalies as they traditionally have never garnered as much as a Carter-type in return since the lockout
