Rights to RFA to be Halak traded to St. Louis

I agree that Eller is a very good prospect. By any ranking he is a top 40 prospect, some rank him as a top 25 prospect in all of hockey. He immediately becomes the Habs second best prospect behind P.K., he is a two way playmaker, with good, but not great size. But for all of the Montreal fans unlike many forwards on the team he is actually six feet tall.
 
I think trading Halak is a great idea from a Montreal standpoint. May as well do the trade when you can get the most for him. Halak is NOT as good as his heroic playoff run, but it sure helped his value.

Having said that...it is also obvious that Price is NOT the man for the job in Montreal either. I'd love to see him get a fresh start somewhere else. Talk about adding pressure to a kid who already can't handle it. Montreal will destroy every bit of confidense that kid ever had...if there is any left.

It's the rules. It's why Toronto had to re-acquire their own 2nd round pick from Chicago (which was originally traded to Montreal for Grabovsky) to get Kessel.

Philly could trade for Halak, but what's the point? They still set themselves up to be poached by another team. Either way, Halak is without a contract, and as a RFA he is open to offers from any team. Only condition is that St Louis has the rights to match any offer he is given and agrees to from another team.... all this assuming St Louis isn't ready to throw around money at him before July 1st when he officially becomes a RFA.

Halak just got traded for a blue chip prospect not PRO and a throw in. This may look like a huge downgrade for other possible trade deals. Quick had 39 wins in LA, not a stat to sneeze at, Biron did 30 in 06-07 (who knew). But Flyers fans wont mind Simmonds in the deal as well.
 
You know who's the big loser in this deal?

The IceBox, considering I just freaking had 10 signed photos and two autographed jerseys made up.

Luongo, Huet, Lehtonen, Biron, Vokoun, Giguere, Rask, and every other goalie including Halak, didn't get as much as a Carter in return. My point is that goalies aren't worth much on the trading block, and I don't expect Carter to be worth, realistically, only 1 goalie whether it's Halak or Quick or someone more established with higher credentials... unless there is another element to the puzzle.

Philly could get A LOT more for Carter than any one goalie in this league, and anyone that thought Halak or Price was good enough for Carter (and this includes both Habs and Philly fans), was a little off their rockers.

It wouldn't be for both of them anyways - Doesn't sound like they'd be too upset if Sergei bolted and headed to the KHL. But with everything they had invested in Price - and that there was no contact with Halak's camp whatsoever, this was the most likely scenario.
 
From a realist point of view, this was a very good move by the Habs. Halak's value is the highest it's ever been, and to garner a top 30 prospect (13th overall pick) that fills a need up the middle merely for the rights to discuss a contract is a wonderful coup.

From a Habs fan point of view, this will set us back everything that the franchise gained over the last couple of years. Price is a no-talent hack, a waste of a first rounder, who's confidence is so low right now that he'd be hard pressed to find success in the ECHL. I was hoping that the playoffs would finally show the team who they should have moved forward with as their starter. Unfortunately, it seems that Boob Gainey still has some control over the direction of this franchise. My only hope now is that Price gets kicked to the curb as well, and the franchise moves in a completely different direction as far as the starting netminder goes.
 
In any other town this trade isn't looked at the same way. See how this plays out before burning the the city. Look at Cam Ward now. Granted he won the Cup, but his stock is zilch compared to what it was back then. Halak played great during the playoffs and got hot at the right time but during the season he was so-so.

Not saying Price is the next best thing since sliced bread, but don't give up on the guy. Half of Montreal's problems come from fan expectations. Ridiculously high.

Best thing Montreal can do is bring in a solid vet in goal that has the stones to tell the media off when need be and to bring Price along the right way.
 
Halak was a better than average version of Huet.

Montreal made them famous and now others will pay for it

As an ex Canes season ticket holder, I completely disagree with this.

He is beloved by both the fans and the young core of players.

Here are his stats since the Cup victory, on Canes teams that havent exactly been dynamos on either end of the ice;

As a Blues fan, I have mixed emotions of skepticism and excitement. Over the past decade+ many goaltenders have failed to live up to the promise in St. Louis, and I'm hoping Halak will break that trend and we have truly found a franchise goalie.
I'm perfectly fine with giving up Eller. I feel like St. Louis fans have tended to over-hype our prospects as of late, and I'm not completely sold that Eller will turn out to be all that is promised. Time will tell, can't wait for the season to start.
 
I think this was a stupid move by Montreal.....way to quick......should have shopped him more especially closer to draft day.....they lost out....BIG TIME....

That was the theory when TO reacquired the pick, but the Leafs acquired Kessel in a trade rather than signing him as an RFA, so they didn't actually end up needing their own pick. It was part of the trade, but that could have been any pick.
