Habs will be fine. I like having a 6 foot tall centre. Finding a goalie is not hard as these playoffs have proven. Montreal will get another rookie superstar in no time. 6 foot centres come once in generation apparently... whose the last tall Habs centremen? Beliveau? Forget goalies feeling the pressure of being the next Roy or Dryden or Plante, think of all the dudes who have to think about the 17 rings the longest captain of the team owns.

I wonder how the Habs players feel about the deal. Over the second half of the season and especially the playoffs they all talked about how great Halak was. I bet it was a big disappointment for the players.

Here's your reward for carrying our team into the 3rd round.....

See ya later....

Classy is not a word that comes to mind.

It's all fine and dandy to say that Halak had a great run, the guys loved him, etc. However, this is a business and the Habs are already in cap trouble. They have to re-sign Plekanec and need more help up front. Halak will likely ask for $4 mill a season while Price could be had for around $2. That $2 million savings could give them the flexibility to sign Pleks or add a UFA.

It's not always about who's better. It's about dollars and cents. That's why today's GMs have a much tougher job than ever

Dont like to see Halak leaving Montreal, but this was all about money and cap space. If they would sign Halak for 4-5 million, there would be about 6-7 million free space for the rest. Dont think that players like Hamrlik, Spacek, Gomez, Gionta, Camalleri are tradeable with their high salaries at this moment.

But I guess Montreal will need a strong number 2 between the pipes. Someone expirienced like Niittymaki, who can step up when it will be needed. Dont want to say that Price is or will be a bad goalkeeper, but I think the pressure will be too high on him.

i really hope Price decides to not sign with Montreal, after the way he was treated last season by fans and by management and also because of the way the Montreal management treated Halak in keeping him in the dark about their intentions.

Montreal made the right choice cap wise because Halak's contract (if resigned) was eligible for arbitration but their management ethics sicken me.

C'mon Price open your eyes and go to a team that will believe in you.

this is crazy he must have not wanted to sign a long deal with mtl or this was just a salary dump any which way this sucks for habs fans cause he looks to be great

Montreal didn't even begin talks with Halak, he was kept in the dark from Montreals management since the end of the playoffs... and after all Halak did for them... man that really sickens me.

Cap room is always difficult to keep when you have several key players to sign.

Resigning Plekanec is gotta be on the top of Gauthier's agenda, considering he is always on the first-line PK unit since Koivu moved on and he has capable offense.

I have a feeling the trade came down to money and cap space. I'm certain the asking amount might have been as high as $5.0M a season considering the playoff performance.

I could see Carey possibly signing for $2.0M for a season simply because arbitration would definitely not be favourable.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Price signing at $2 mil. He holds ALL the cards. He can see if any team gives a big offer that the Habs have to match or he can just wait and see what Halak signs for. If Halak signs for $4 mil a season, why shouldn't Price ask for more? He can simply say the Habs valued him more than Halak.

Habs fan should pray that Price doesn't go the route of most overpaid athletes and returns the loyalty the Habs are showing him. But there's no guarantee he will.

Depends on if Montreal makes a move to pick up another goaltender in the meantime. They could say Price was their backup option for another one or two years.

Regardless, Montreal had to deal one of the two... there was no way they'd be able to sign both. So then the option was, the kid with all of the early hype who wasn't going to bring much on the trade market, or the kid who played above his head for half a season and may never reach that level of play again?

I truly think Price has more room to get better - Halak is close to as good as he is ever going to get.

I think they made the right choice at this time; they made the WRONG choice by letting themselves get in this situation in the first place.

The Canadiens just traded away the guy that was the de facto #1 goalie for the last half of the regular season and playoffs because they felt that Price was the better long-term choice to be their goaltender. If that doesn't fit to a T the concept of being on a team that believes in him, please tell me what is.

They dont need pleks they just replaced him with Eller Gauthier said he expects him to help the team as early as next year as a second line center. If we save the 5 million that would go to pleks and trade A. kostitsyn thats 8.25 million that we have that can be thrown to kovalchuk. I like this trade a lot i think it opens the door for a big signing.

Losing Plekanec and Halak will be tough on Montreal. I am a Leafs fan and even I respected how good Plekanec is. These kids will not be able to fill in Plekanec shoes, not next year anyhow.

Maybe they are planning on bringing up the kid from the AHL, he is pretty special as well. Hopefully Price has grown up some since last year. Maybe he needs to know that he is the number 1 guy instead of all these doubts. The Habs have just sent him a loud message, pressure is on kid its all about you know. I think Price will be fine, he has all the tools to be a great goalie. I hope he is just for my buddy Shane;)

Sweet! Trading Halak when his value will never be higher. Now St. Louis will have to live with the eventual let-down.

Solid prospects to Montreal... and Price back where he should be... in the #1 slot.

I can almost garuntee everyone here that Halak is not as good as his playoff run indicated. Washington made him look good by shooting 50 shots a game at him from above the circles. And while Pittsburgh did a better job at getting to him, they still didn't put as much pressure on as they needed too. Philly finally figured it out. Halak is not a franchise goalie in my opinion. I think Price has a higher ceiling, and has proven he can win, at the world juniors, and in the AHL. Lars Eller is a top prospect, and I can see him on the Canadiens to start the season. This is a good trade for Montreal from my point of view...

Hopefully this will be the last goalie that the Blues have to trade for to get a winner. Don't get me wrong, the Blues are in my top 3... not sure why.

Except for the minor fact that he was dominant in the regular season, not just one playoff series. He wasnt simply a "playoff run" goalie like Leighton or Boucher, he was the #1.
