Roger Clemens returning to Yankees

NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens returned to the New York Yankees, making a dramatic announcement to fans from the owner's box during Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners.

Clemens' contract will be a pro-rated salary of $28 million dollars, according to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. His pro-rated salary last season was $22 million.

Clemens will make about $4.5 million per month for June, July, August and September.

At the end of the seventh-inning stretch, Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard told fans to turn their attention to the box, where Clemens was standing with a microphone. As the video scoreboard in right-center televised Clemens, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner made the announcement himself.



"It's a privilege to be back," he said.



Clemens agreed to a minor league contract and most likely will join the Yankees after several weeks getting into shape.

Clemens, who is close friends with Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, said Pettitte is going to be upset with him because he kept the news quiet. The two talked as recently as Saturday night and Clemens didn't share the news.

"It's time to go to work," Clemens said. "I've got a lot of work to do, to get back up here."

I am very excited to see Roger coming back to pitch for the Yankees. Should definitely be a great help to the Yankees pitching staff.

Pretty big time deal right here..it's just for a ridiculous amount of money which I EXTREMELY hate..he's earning around $5 million a month..and he's not even pitching for an entire season. He's one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, no doubt there. The Yankees really needed a big time pitcher here and he will certainly help out the younger pitchers (if he doesn't constantly use that clause in his contract that doesn't require him to be at the stadium during non-pitching days). We'll see how this progresses..but on paper, this definitely puts the Yankees back into contention against the Sox.

I don't think he's "washed up", but I do think he's gettin way too much money from the Yanks!
I guess time will tell, but I doubt they'll get their moneys worth out of this deal.
