Ryan Hollweg - Why?

Following on from Paul's (bidds55) "How Long Before Hollweg Gets A Lifetime Suspension Thread" - Ryan Hollweg, why? Im not talking about 1 particular incident, just what the stats say about his NHL career.

So this morning, as I usually do every few days, I checked recent NHL stats. Saw there was a fight in the Isles/Leafs game - well, well, well - Hollweg lost another. What is it that GM's see in Ryan Hollweg? Do they see an agitator, an energy guy, a fighter?

As a fighter he has had 28 scraps in the NHL, his NHL stats (according to the good folks who contribute to the voting at www.hockeyfights.com) are as follows;

Won 5 (18%)
Drawn 4 (14%)
Lost 19 (68%)

Since his NHL debut, in 217 games debut he has 14 points (5G/9A). A point every 15.5 games. He is a -33 on the +/-. He takes stupid penalties at key times in games and is a bit of a liability.

At the end of the day, he's in the NHL - Im not. I havent seen an NHL game where Hollweg has played so I dont know what his all round contribution is. I just cant believe that there isn't anybody else in the Leafs organisation who could fill Hollwegs role (whatever that may be) better than he does.

Scouts, GM's, Managers must see something. What is it?

Leafs fans / Ranger fans, anybody - your thoughts?
 
I'll admit I'm not a Ryan Hollweg fan, nor have I paid attention enough to him to figure out whether he's a good player or not in my mind, but I will say that with his fight record I think that one of the qualities that people might be looking at is his testicular fortitude. It's pretty brave of a guy to get into a fight of which he runs a 68% chance of not winning.
 
I know that last year after the Leafs shipped out Belak, people thought the team lacked toughness. That being said, Hollweg does get into trouble way too much. So, personally I don't seem him adding much to the Leafs.
 
As a Ranger fan I USED to love Hollweg....The guy would get on the ice and skate with 100% intensity, take the body, and liven up the crowd....Then he started taking some of the stupidest penalties I've ever seen in really big games...He's now on my S list.....
 
Most Leafs fans hate Hollweg. I can`t understand why we had to waste a perfectly good 5th for him. I feel bad for the Rangers having to deal with him and Avery throughout the whole season. It`s amazing the team didn`t implode.

Avery was actually very effective during his time here in NY. maybe it was the motivation of being able to play in a city he actually wanted to be in. he is by far the best agitator when doing it right and he has more skill than other agitators when he has the puck.

as for Hollweg he was also somewhat effective for a while before all of the dumb penalties. as mentioned above, he never had a problem hitting people and aside from Colton Orr as the enforcer, the Rangers never really had someone that was the energy guy and the hard hitter so it kind of worked. now that Hollweg is gone our next biggest guy is Callahan (in terms of hitting).

As a die hard Leaf's fan I think a roster spot is wasted on Hollweg. He doesn't provide enough in terms of grit/intensity/toughness to warrant him to be on this team and I would much rather see a guy like Tlusty take up his spot who has some offensive upside..
 
dont like the guy, but when he hit the ice he is a steamboat ... he skates at 100% whether he is looking for the hit or backchecking (from what ive seen in the 3 or 4 games ive seen). yes he does take dumb penalties and BAD times, but if you could curb that he could be an effective energy guy, someone to lift the leafs bench once in a blue moon ... god knows they need it

The guy puts in effort. Thats what he does Richard has already shown how poor his scoring stats are but unless things hae changed since his move to the Leafs he has very limited ice time on a line that usually isent employed in all out attack. He put up decent points in the minors and always put up PIMs as long as he could skate. There arent many guys he wouldent fight but put him on the ice and everyone on the opposition is watching his back and that can do just enough to unsettle a team.

Is this why you're such a Brooklyn Brawler fan Ryan? I knew it.

wiseguy917's comments remind me of a Vancouver Canucks player that used to be EXACTLY like the way he described Hollweg. Jarkko Ruutu used to be that way until he started believing in his own hype and figured he had to go out and be that way EVERY SINGLE game.

Didn't work out so well over that.

hahah...someone with a lower win percentage than hollweg. hey now...imagine what the guys who lost to hollweg must feel like?! :owned:

He plays with an intensity that not many other players have. I liked him a lot a couple years ago, he was at the time part of what most nhl people called the best third line in the game. He is older now, he knows the players in the league better, and he is more comfortable acting the way he does.

Its hockey, you need players like him, but when you have players that live on the edge, they are bound to fall off every now and then.

I prefer Avery as my team agitator, but hollweg comes much cheaper. I always remind people of a man named claude lemieux when they think agitators are useless and dont have skill. (obviously its only 1 player, but you could argue the presence Hollweg (or any other agitator) makes when they step on the ice for a shift is just as strong as the presence ovechkin makes)
 
You know why Hollweg is great? Flash back to the Caps - Rangers game where Semin ran Lundqvist and didn't get called. The Rangers did nothing.

If Hollweg was still on the team, Semin would have been launched headfirst into the boards before the end of the period. Dirty move? Yes. But the message would be sent... don't run our goalie.
 
Amazes me how someone of his skill level.... which is none; manages to stay in the league as long as he has. Hes pretty much a waste of roster space. Then you think of the other players that suck up a roster spot and don't deserve it. There's a player or 2 on every team that could qaulify. But Holweg is def #1 in the league for stealing money. Even if its minimum.

PS. I forgot all he does is charge and jump when he checks. Yea I really don't like him at all now. Head shot artist for the lose.
 
Well he hits the ice and everyone becomes a target, he will fight anyone hopefully the trainers can actually teach him to fight a little bit better to pull the win percentage up.
