Samardzija to give up football for MLB

Jeff Samardzija is giving up football for baseball, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting.

Samardzija, a wide receiver at Notre Dame, could have been a first-round pick in the NFL draft. However, he was also drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round last year and got a deal potentially worth $7.25 million over five years. That he'll concentrate on baseball makes him one of the Cubs' top pitching prospects.

This is a shocker to me personally..I didn't even know he had pitching talent. Its such a huge turn around from being in the NFL draft to pitching for the Cubs.

The kid can't lose either way but let's face it, playing football isn' the best call for your longevity in sports. Also, besides the much longer career length in baseball, the financial security there is unparalleled.

I got to be honest I have never heard of him!! Was is he any good N.D. as a WR? Is he a senior?

He was projected to be a first round draft pick in April's NFL Draft this year. I believe he was the 4th or 5th best receiver in the top 10.

he is the white guy that Quinn threw touchdowns to. I see him a two sport athlete. Tough to make it in baseball

I don't think he can play football under his contract he just signed. If he does he has to give back a huge chunk of it. He'll stick with baseball.
