"What's so special about (Crosby)?" Semin told Yahoo! Sports through a translator. "I don't see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there's nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago.(Kane) is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb."

Semin also criticized the way stars like Crosby are promoted, saying there's too much focus on stats and not enough emphasis on skill.

"I think that if you take any player, even if he is "dead wood," and start promoting him, you'll get a star," he told Yahoo! Sports. "Especially if he scores 100 points. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great skill. Let's say you put someone in front of the net and let him deflect pucks in, and he scored 50 goals; everyone will say "Wow!" and then hand him a $10 million per year contract. That's what they like here."

I kind of agree with him, Sidney Crosby isn't in the same league as Gretzky or Lemieux were... but to say that there is too much focus on stats and not enough emphasis on skill is a little weird. If you're so skilled, you should be able to put up the stats. I don't care if a guy has the speed and skill if he can't score. I'll take the "no skill" 50 goal scorer every time.
 
yea since 100 points is so common now a days ...and this coming from a player who has still to live up to his billing ....call me when he breaks 100 then Ill care
 
while i agree with some points that are made, i will admit that i am glad everyone is promoting Crosby like crazy. his ability to sell seats and promote the sport is not something that can be done by just anyone. i'm not necessarily a fan of Crosby or a basher but anything to improve the NHL is step i don't mind taking.
 
Semin saying that reeks of sour grapes. He complains that Crosby shouldn't be compared to Gretzky and Lemieux (which I agree with), but then he compares him with Patrick Kane (who must have a whopping 100 NHL games under his belt himself).

'Especially if he scores 100 points' - ummm, Alex - why should the NHL *not* promote the guy who has ripped up the NHL, won a stack of awards already, and helped get his team to the Stanley Cup finals? I like Brooks Laich as much as anyone (and likely more than most), but the NHL can't market the game around pluggers. They are necessary, and more skilled than pretty much everyone else who has ever laced 'em up - but the NHL needs stars. If you want to get yourself a piece of that pie - put up the numbers.
 
How the hell did this guy even land an interview?

I don't fault the NHL for marketing Sid. As far as the Gretzkys and Lemieuxs of the world go, he's as close as you can get to them in this day and age. They'd probably market Semin the same way, but two things stand in his way: his skill level and his easily goofed last name. Sorry kid, you missed.
 
I guess when you lead the league in the first 10 games of the season, you suddenly become the expert on how to market the NHL?
 
I'm not a huge Crosby fan either...I think he lacks in skills that the superstars in the past have had, but he makes up for that in desire and pure determination. But I can tell you what makes Crosby legitimate....he had the spotlight shone squarely in his face at 18 years old and he delivered.
 
Without a Doubt, Sidney Crosby Has helped the NHL get back on its feet. But whoever compares Crosby to ALL-TIME Greats like Lemieux and Gretzky, should have there head examined.
 
Saying Sidney Crosby is lacking in skill is a joke. Really? You all believe that he's not one of the most talented guys in the game? I guess he's piled up all the points he has through sheer luck and hustle, eh?

Word for word, this is exactly what I thought when I read this clown's comments on Sportscentre.

I will stop short of comparing Sid to Lemieux or Gretz...but he's going to be a heck of a lot closer to them when he finishes his career (in terms of stats and Cups and awards) than Semin, or Patrick Kane for that matter.

A totally classless thing to say, and one he will end up regretting down the road when Crosby eliminates his team or makes him look like the flash in the pan that he currently is.

I don't understand why people get all bent out of shape over a players personal opinion. Crosby is good, but is he WAY ahead of everyone else in the league as far as skill is concerned...not a chance. The NHL needed a "poster boy" for the league and they got it (and a good choice I might add). If Ovechkin was from North America, spoke better english, and wasn't so ugly, the NHL would promote him more too.

I commend Semin for mentioning guys like Kane though. When people think of the NHL, I hope they don't ONLY think of Crosby, but of all the other superb young talent the league does have now. If people only think of Crosby every time they hear "NHL", then the league is in trouble. You can't build a league around one single person.

I'm sure many of you are like me and respect Crosby for his talent...but get a little tired of hearing Sidney this or Sidney that. There are other players and teams that I would rather see more of. I think it also good for other players to feel the same way. However, I was already a fan of the game long before Crosby, so I guess I'm not the market that the NHL is trying to tap into.
 
I think the interview is refreshing. It's better than every Crosby (or from anyone) interview. Players should be more like Semin and talk trash. That brings up some emotions. I think such an interview is better than all those thousands of political correct ones.

Crosby has had the spotlight shone in his face well before 18. I am pretty sure he was in the spotlight as soon as someone compared him to Gretzky.

I am a crosby fan and he is great for the game and for the young kids. I hear it all the time when I go and watch my Godson play hockey about which player they want to be, almost everyone of them wants to be crosby.
 
I've had a day to think about this now, and I have to say, I've changed my stance a little bit. While I still find it funny that a second-rate player who has had a good start is calling out one of the top players in the world, he has a right to his opinion, just as that knucklehead Avery did when he dissed Iginla a few weeks ago.

I think what it will do is make a very determined player even more determined now. Crosby has owned the Capitals in the past, and I suspect that in future games, he'll be even more determined to light it up against them.

As a fan of Sid's, I appreciate the extra motivation. He could use it, as he has appeared a little complacent to start this season, if I am being honest. History has shown us that this kind of bulletin board material always comes back to haunt the "genius" who makes the comments. This will be no different, I'm guessing.
 
Nothing wrong with a little trashtalk amungst players in this day and age - nice to see that they still really don't care for each other out there. While his statements are almost entirely without merit in my opinion - so are half the things these mouthbreathers say so I'll take them as such.
I will be tuning into the next Pens/Caps game for sure now - I expect this rivalry to pick up a little steam over this and the next couple years.
 
Semin's using his mouth to grab a headline, nothing more. Eric Desjardins did it, Bobby Clarke did it, John Tortorella did it, Sean Avery does it, so why not?
 
I wouldn't be surprised to see Semin in the KHL next year.

I've heard Semin has loads of talent but is just kind of lazy so until see stops being lazy and gains consistency, this will seem like a joke. Now if Ovechkin had said it, that would be different because he can back it up.
 
So far Semins backed it up - He's leading the league in scoring. I doubt he can keep that up (though he's got skill coming out the you-know-what) but it's been a slow week, so why not grab a headline. Besides, Pittsburgh/Washington has the makings of Detroit/Colorado, Edmonton/Calgary, etc.

(And I firmly expect Semin to be spitting out teeth the next time Washington plays Pittsburgh)


The best part of all this: somewhere Michael Farkas has short-circuited his keyboard from crying.
