Just saw this tweet. We'll see in the next hour if it's true or not

SovSport report that #Canes will announce the signing of Semin within the next hour. Believed to be a 1y deal with higher $ than last year.

Not too sure why Carolina would fork out the cash to sign Semin for one year. He may score 30 goals for them, but doesn't have much else to offer. His talent is unquestionable. He reminds me of a young Alexei Kovalev. At least they are only committed to him for one year. In the end it may pay off for them.

Canes will be much improved this season. I would have been happy with the Sens offering Semin a 1 year deal to play with Spezza. My guess is they are attempting to bring in a winger via trade (Bobby Ryan)

Kind of makes you wonder where rumors start...

Word was he was after 2 years for $10M and most pundits said he was going to take a hit on that to sign for 1 year based on his 'reputation'. Carolina just made the cap floor in style with that signing. Bobby Ryan's value just went way up as did Shane Doan's.

Good signing, never has Staal (Eric that is) played with someone of his ability. Maybe a new start is just what the doctor ordered. No doubting his talent, now lets see if he brings it. At 1 year it is not too much of a gamble even at the large bucks.

Ah yes... It's going to be nice not having to watch Semin (as a member of the team I follow) with his twice per game taking lazy penalties.. Once in the neutral zone and again in the offensive zone. :badmood:

Good luck to him in Carolina, but not too much, BTW... ;) Anyways, Alex was always a thorn in the side of the 'Canes. My guess is that it's better to have him on your team then playing against ya.

Steve, I have NO idea why the Wings didn't at least make the same offer! Unless Pavel ripped on him!

If the wings offered him that contraact, wouldnt that make him the highest paid wing, I dont think holland wouldvee offered him a contract that pays him more than zetterbeg and datysuk

The Canes are in a perfect situation to make this move - even if they swing and miss.

Sure it's a lot of money for a guy with some pretty significant flaws - but he will be playing with some very skilled players in Carolina in an open system and he will be playing for a contract. I can see this one playing out well.

And, if he is awful, you only have one year to put up with it and you can move along.

While listening to The Ticket today after the Semin signing, heard them say Semin's agent confirmed that Detroit never even contacted him. And I'm glad! Babcock would have him sitting as a healthy scratch by the end of November, ok not really but no way he would put up with Semin's laziness on the ice.

7 million is ridiculous money for him. He plays with no heart and is invisible when it counts......brutal. Are they trying to hit the cap floor or something? Brutal, wow!!!

7 mil for one year is better than 5 mil per for 4 years.

He isnt worth 7, but it is pretty low risk considering its 1 year.

It doesnt matter though, its 1 year.

They have tons of cap space.... they want a winger. Extremely low risk. If he sucks or pouts or doesn't work they arent married to the guy, he walks in 12 months.

It's just a test drive. An expensive one but like I said, they have the cap space so it's worth it.
