Senators acquire Stillman and Commodore

The Ottawa Senators have shuffled the deck in a big way by completing a four-player transaction with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Senators have acquired defenceman Mike Commodore and forward Cory Stillman in exchange for defenceman Joe Corvo and forward Patrick Eaves.

Commodore and Stillman are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Stillman had to agree to waive his no-trade clause to go to Ottawa.

The acquisition of Stillman should give the Senators secondary scoring a boost. The team struggled mightily recently when both Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley missed time due to injuries.

The Sens did not just win the Stanley cup because of this deal... are the better, absolutely because they now have a player that can be put on a 2nd line that will help balance the load. Commodore is better for Ottawa because he is a defensive d-man, which they needed

However, I think Carolina just won the Southeast as I believe Corvo is going to help that Power Play and Eaves is going to be put in an expanded role, one he would never get in Ottawa because of the big line. This might be more of an indictment of the South East Division.

Short-term: Ottawa

Long-term: Carolina

Overall: This really is good trade for both teams.

So you are telling me that a team with no goaltender is going to take the win in this trade long term, because of Joe Corvo who worked on the Kings, because he was top two at the time and Patrick Eaves who is a noted flop? Who the hell cares about long term here? No one is really getting any younger in this trade, and one team is now solidified with two heavy hitting lines, a clutch goal scorer, and great passer in Cory Stillman, plus one heck of a playoff performer and defenseman in Mike Commordore. Did I mention hard nosed? Hard nosed defenseman, too. You have got to be kidding. The Canes have been slumping for two months and the Caps have been tearing the league a new one. Where have you been?

Yes I am saying that Carolina is going to win this long term. Did Eaves REALLY get a chance to be a top line player in Ottawa? NO, and don't tell me he did. He is going to get every chance to excel, and if he doesn't then i'm wrong.

The Canes, for slumping for 2 months, still have a really good shot to finish as the SE Division Champs. As much as I'd like to see Washington win, the reality is they go as AO goes. However, do you REALLY believe Washington can survive with more than 40% of there production (total points) coming from 1 person? 2 days ago, yes, now, I don't.

All I'm saying is I like this trade for both sides Ottawa in the short, Carolina long term.

Ohh, BTW, speaking of teams with no goalies, how is Ottawa going to win with Gerber, who is good for a game or two, then becomes Gerber again and Emery, who is on his on agenda going to win?

Ask yourself these questions and let me know if you come up with different answers as I did.
Is Eaves going to get a chance in Carolina? No.
Does Ottawa have the best two front lines in hockey? Yes.
Does Ottawa have above average defense? Yes.
Does Carolina score as much as Washington? No.
Is Washington one dimensional? No.
Can you name more than two players on Washington other than Alexander Ovechkin who can score? Yes, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, and Mike Green.
How about two more? Vik. Kozlov and Tomas Fleischmann.
Can you name any players on Carolina that can score now that this trade has been made? Eric Staal every other year.
So Ottawa has added more hard defense and more of a scoring threat to their team and Carolina has added a young player with little to show and a good defenseman. Oddly enough, Washington was not involved in this trade, so their proven goaltender and heavy scoring stays the same. Do you see Cam Ward scoring any goals down the stretch?
Okay. Bye.

As a Canes fan, I like the deal for us as well. Stillman, while a very good player, is just painfully slow and has not played well the past couple of months. The thing that really makes me think this was a smart deal for the Canes is that both Stillman and Commodore are UFAs at the end of this season. It is doubtful that we would have made much of a push to resign Stillman and Commodore has long been rumored to want to go back to either Calgary or Edmonton (he still lives in Calgary during the off season).

Corvo is the type of defenseman the Canes have long wanted and he is locked up for the next 2 years. And for Eaves, he is 23, has already had a 20 goal season, and is supposed to be a good young talent.

You do not get an award for losing in the playoffs (assuming you make it). The Ottawa Senators know that. The Carolina Hurricanes do not. Sadly the Senators have been stiffed for a few years whereas the Hurricanes have championships. That will all change this year.
Rob

Oh, and to refute an above point. The Canes have 168 goals on the season while The Caps have 164...

Any while we are on the topic of scoring, here are the top 3 (Stillman was 4 and slumping badly) point getters for each team;
Carolina
Whitney-50 pts (21G, 29A)
Brind'Amour-49 pts (19G, 30A)
Staal-48 pts (27G, 21A)

Washington
Ovechkin 76 pts (47G, 29A)
Backstrom 45 pts (9G, 36A)
Kozlov 37 pts (11G, 26A)

AND the starting goalie's stats
Carolina
Ward 2.92 GAA, .899 SV%, 22 Wins

Washington
Kolzig 3.04 GAA, .886 SV%, 20 Wins

;)

Are you seriously going to argue a team coming from last place to third to a team going from third to tenth? Which teams top three have more productive numbers over, let's say the past two months?
Rob

Oh, this will be fun

Is Eaves going to get a chance in Carolina? No.

Are you joking me? Seriously?

Does Ottawa have the best two front lines in hockey? Yes.

NO. Alfie/Spezza/Heatley are the best line in hockey. No one would argue this, especially after Saturday night. But you CAN NOT tell me there 2nd line is better than Datysuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom or Modano/Lethinen/Riberio... c'mon

Does Ottawa have above average defense? Yes.

I would not argue this better. Commodore does help, as I have said before

Does Carolina score as much as Washington? No.

Actually, they do

Is Washington one dimensional? No.

Ovechkin is responsible for nearly 29% of goals and over 40% of there overall offense, they could be considered one dimensional

Can you name more than two players on Washington other than Alexander Ovechkin who can score? Yes, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, and Mike Green.

Congrats to you

How about two more? Vik. Kozlov and Tomas Fleischmann.

17 goals combined proves this??? Try Nylander instead of Fleischmann next time...

Can you name any players on Carolina that can score now that this trade has been made? Eric Staal every other year.

Most trades are not made for 1 player. It was done to make the ENTIRE team better

You just PROVED part of my arguement. This good short term deal for Ottawa and Carolina long term. Thank you

Okay. Bye.

See ya in a bit when you reply

John Grahame is not going to even sniff the ice in the playoffs... yikes, I'm partially agreeing with a Canes fan!

LOL :)

Now dont get me wrong, I think this is a great deal for the Sens as well, but I dont think it will automatically win them the East, and I definetly think this is a more even trade than it is being made out to be.

The Sens have the edge this year in the deal, but the Canes make out in the long term!
Daniel

You must have taken some time to type out that reply, although you failed to notice a few points.
First of all, you tried to catch me as an idiot off his guard when you slipped in the comparison of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Holmstrom, plus Modano, Lehtinen, and Ribeiro into the mix of does another team have two better top lines? Detroit is great, but they do not have two great top lines, Dallas is just a joke.
Since the Canes went down the toilet about a month back, which team is averaging more goals per game? See my point now genius?
Putting up thirty percent of a teams goals does not show being of one dimension. Carolina has nothing to offer other than pulling out tight games. Washington can hit, fight, take your team on the score board, and wreck them in the shootout should they need to.
The amazingly illiterate folk from Buffalo whom can not spell or keep context ordered want to also be noted as blow-off hockey fans now. Nylander is done for the season. I will name him in Fleischmann's place next year. If I had named Nylander now, you would have tried to pound that down my throat.
The Ottawa Senators made their entire team about three times better. The Hurricanes made their team a sandwich and a custom set of golf tees for the summer.
I proved your argument by telling you that the winner of deadline deals does make a trade based on short term turnaround? A deadline deal sends your team to the playoffs, not the links.

of course I did, this is fun for me... especially when the baby is sleeping!

your the one that said Ottawa has the best 2 lines in hockey, which they don't

Overall, it's still Carolina Dr. Hawking

Winning in the playoffs and late in the season requires you to pull out tight games? Fighting, hitting are a nice dimension, makes a team a pain to play against. But again, if your relying on 1 person too much, they tend to go away.

Actually, I forgot Nylander was out, so no I would not have.

Ottawa is NOT 3 times better.

The last statement is true, but what does that question mean? I'm from Buffalo, so I'm a bit slow with these things.

Deadline deals do two things, it makes 1 team better in the short term, and the other better for the long term.

I'm done replying to you on this topic. I think this is getting everyone nowhere
