Series 1 LaFreniere

I like the vintage vibe of the photo, reminds me of...

I'll play devil's advocate. I don't think an exception should have been granted. We have had bad rookie class years before and the hobby has survived. Now we have an exception year that will have a new 'definition' of RC and eligibility for being on a card. This card will always have an asterisk by it, which will be ignored by sellers.

I get why UD did it. It's all business and they are essentially printing guarantees that UDs1 will sell well. And I get why the PA allowed it. It's all business. But if Laf were not in the draft I wonder how hard UD would have pressed. Maybe we would have only gotten one series of UD this year. Would that have been so bad?

My only knock is I wish there was a shoulder patch or if he has been assigned a number already. The arms look bare. But it's more of a minor quibble about aesthetics more than anything else. I'll still end up getting it.

He basically was a member of the PA the minute he was drafted, as the #1 pick. When there was the frenzy over McDavid back in 2015, the Oilers were allowed to sell jerseys with his name and number almost immediately. Having an ELC signed very quickly also helped.

Right now the league and the PA need as much HRR as possible, so barring a total washout of the season, one series is not happening

Usually those that complain are those that will be asking ridiculous price once they have the card in hand!
Stay tuned.

That's a wild assumption you're making. I'm just not a fan of staged pics on cards, especially for the most collectable card of any NHLer, just like I'm not a fan of photoshoot memorabilia on my cards either. I see no correlation between having a personal preference and price gouging but maybe you know more about my future than me.

Fair enough, I only brought up the PA because I assumed that was who UD had to court to get the exception for Laf cards. And essentially change the definition of what an RC is. For this one player.

How in the world did they choose these two for the Flyers YGs?

32 Egor Zamula - Philadelphia Flyers
245 Kirill Ustimenko - Philadelphia Flyers

I guess maybe Zamula (he may get a call up this year, although they need to figure out if he goes by Yegor or Egor) but Ustimenko? He was playing in Belarus and is maybe the 4th best goalie prospect in the Flyers system. At least Zamula has good potential although there are just other players in the way of him getting a roster spot at this point. He will be learning in the AHl for a year or two. It seems that they had to put somebody in for each team and they just threw darts at the prospect board. Perhaps a retro Gritty YG would have been in order instead...

I would have been fine with a photoshoot profile shot of Lafreniere.

Anyone hear abnout the bounties placed on the Lafreniere High Gloss???

Three of them so far:
$10,000
$10,500
$12,000

Some people are going to cash in!

I would much rather the staged on-ice photo they used on the Lafreniere YG over a draft day portrait personally. On ice in the team gear is far more appealing than the player standing there with a baggy jersey draped over a dress shirt and tie.

The fuss over the exception and the staged photo will die down over time anyway. Jack Eichel's ''rookie autos'' that came out years after his rookie year seem to sell just fine and I'm sure the Lafreniere YG will also. As long as he lives up to the hype the card will command value just like any other high end Young Gun.

I agree, especially your point on value. If he has the demand people think he's going to have in this hobby, it never really "mattered" what this card looked like, since it's going to sell very well regardless of the aestetic appeal or lacktherof.

The photo choice is more a collector preference, not a value signal in the case of Lefreniere's Young Gun RC.

OK with the photo shot picture BUT what is missing?
I guess they could have added Sleeve Numbers and a Commemorative Patch to use in 20/21 products.

EDIT - UD dressed him up but not enough!

If Lafreniere was not drafted, creating an NHL card of his is not even up for discussion. No asterisk in my opinion.

If you went into the bubble, you were eligible if you have not played a game as of yet.

CF31 Collection Cartes Sportives social media. Safe to say someone will go as far as 15k tomorrow. Still far from the 500k Zion NT but still nice to see some value in hockey

Umm

I definitely could be wrong, and no disrespect to Lafrenière, but on a scale of Yakupov to McDavid, he’s probably closer to a Jack Hughes.

$15,000 is pretty insane considering Lafreniere's resume to date. Best case scenario he may be the third best player on his team in a couple seasons. I do believe he is a much better prospect than Jack Hughes. Lafreniere, who totally a natural winger could slide over and play C much better than Jack Hughes, a natural center, can at the moment. It's unprecidented but Hughes needed about 2-3 years in the NCAA before being rushed into the NHL. Lafreniere had the build and core/leg strength to be an NHL contributor last season.

I'd say as a prospect he is probably on par with Matthews/Eichel. Below guys like McDavid, MacKinnon, Tavares. From a hobby and league perspective it is probably the best case scenario to have a top prospect like Lafreniere playing for the Rangers but as a Wings fan it's pretty disappointing. Hopefully Lucas Raymond and Zadina can make up for passing on Quinn Hughes and losing Lafreniere.
