I'm slowly inching my way forward with my 09/10 Upper Deck HG Set, but have hit a bit of a crossroads. At present I have enough saved up to do either 1 of 2 things:

1) Suck it up and blow my budget on a Tavares YG HG at it's current price hope that all the other HG's that pop up in the meantime reappear when I have the money again.

2) Forget the Tavares and pick up as many other low-mid HG's as I can within the same budget and bring my set that much closer to being complete.

For me, I hate lulls, especially when it's not caused by a lack of availability but because I don't have the moolah. But I'd also hate to have worked this hard to complete a tough set and not have the Grand Poobah, aka JT. Kind of like having a 05/06 YG Set without a Crosby.

Your thoughts?

I think I would go with option #2.

I would rather have a higher completion % than the most expensive card of the lot with only 1/4 of the rest.

However, I'm pretty certain someone out there will try to have all 10 Tavares HG, so if you miss your chance you might never see one again.

Though choice.

pick up the Tavares now and knock the biggest one down. the others will slowly make their way to the market over the years. also, if you decide to stop pursuing the set (like last year), it'll be much easier to move the biggest, most desirable HG YG than the other base HGs in the set.

I'd go with the second option. Another Tavares will show eventually and I personally would rather have more pieces towards my set. That's just me, obviously.

I'd say Tavares now. It might take a while, but you can get most or some of the others later. You may very well never see one again, and if you need to, it'll be easier to move than some lower YGs.

Go for the Tavares..... how many Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin HG/10 have you seen over the years after the product stops getting cracked. Most of the other rookies in that set will dramatically decrease in price while this Tavares guy looks like he's the real deal.

I'd pick up the tavares now, dude has 4 goals in the last two games, right now he is showing his is/will be the real deal in my opinion.

If he does continue on his current pace and wins the calder and continues to get better, what are the odds that these will see the light of day again? I think your more likley to see all the other cards twice again at reasonable prices then seeing this one at a price you can get now.

i'd pick up the tavares now. the money spent on other HGs you could've just spent on the tavares instead.

I'd say option 2, but I'd never attempt what you're attempting anyway. I've become a fan of collecting sets years after release. You get the challenge of hunting pieces down and you pay tenths of what the cards sold for upon release. Tenths.

I would buy the Tavares now.I passed on the first 2 Paul Stastny YG HGs to pop up and I haven't seen one since:badmood:

I say buy now. With only 10 Tavares HGs out there, how many that are bought/opened will go straight to a PC never to be seen again? I suppose that goes for the others too, so maybe you should buy as many of those while you can? I guess I didnt help, lol

Ben-Those are the exact thoughts that continue to circle my mind!

I submitted my offer, so at least this way, even if I don't win it, I can't regret not having tried. And if it doesn't happen I know I have a much better chance of landing a few of the other big guns.

cassijon-I already picked up an Enroth, but I know there are few Sabres collectors out there doing the set, so I'm sure you'll still get a nice return on it.

I'd pick it up now only for the fact you just don't know how often they will show up numbered out of 10.

Is it just me, or is the Tavares HG 06/10 that just got listed the same one that's been listed and won by two different people already? Makes you wonder when the same card gets listed 3 times in 2 weeks by three different owners.
