Early last year (2006) - for a variety of reasons - I had decided to exit the hobby.
Not because of the expenses - although the Sidiots had brought pricing to a ridiculous new level - but more due to other reasons. Among the reasons were that there were only 2 local hobby shops left, their prices were ridiculous and they did absolutely no trading unless they totally bent you over the table first.
I was also having a hard time digesting the state of Yzerman collecting in the Hobby as his retirement loomed. He was the focus of my collection, and since he did not sign for Upper Deck - there was obviously a very limited amount of new items entering the pipeline for him. That is truly evident this year as UD has pretty much elinated Yzerman from it's offerings period.

Flash forward and after I had sold off about half my Yzerman collection as well as 20% of my trade pages for some very nice coin, and had taken my usual summer of golf away from the hobby for the most part - I decided to begin again to pursue hockey. I missed the gambling aspect, I missed the Boards and my love of the game had certainly not abated.

That brings us to the mention in my mail post - of a new problem.
Two months ago - I noticed a new Howe Auto in my local shops Hobby case.
It was a nice hard to find 1999/00 UD Ovation Super Signature #/99. These were impossible to find when the product was released. I asked them if they would consider trading for it - or sell it for half book. No - sorry the Howe's sell too well and no need to trade other items since they would rather sell.
I reminded the manager that I spent a pretty fair amount of coin in the shop - and that I was not asking to steal it.

Forward to last week Sunday - I bring in a couple of nice cards as an offer for the Howe. SPGU Malkin RC selling at $50/60 easy on the Bay, along with a Holmstrom, Zetty and Lidstrom Game Used that they can sell in about 10 minutes for $10 apiece. Here is what he offered me:
Howe Auto = $150
Less my 20% discount for being a store club member
$60 in trade for my cards......

So it would be $150-$30=$120 -$60 (trade) = $60 purchase price.
His assistant looked up at him and actually snickered - even he could not believe that he was actually asking me to do that deal.

I looked at the manager - and had a 2 minute reminder conversation about - what a ridiculous offer that was, long with a reminder what had happened last time I felt that I was not being treated fairly. I , of course, left with no Howe.

I went in Thursday to pick up my 6 boxes of Hot Prospects that I had comitted to from a pre-sell ( they normally do not make me pay in advance - as they are a HUGE Michigan distributor). Sorry - no boxes they sold them since I had not paid in advance. Well - they would have more on Saturday for me - BUT I wanted to open some NOW!!! Well that irked me a little more, especially since I had never been asked to pay up front before.

Now - let's go to Sunday Night.
I am cruising the auctions and go to Howe, and what do I see......
But of course - I see the Howe from the shop on their Ebay auctions.
The same Howe that sells too well in the shop - and that I should not be given any consideration for. I thought about ignoring the auction out of principle - but since I wanted the card in the first place - threw in an Auction Stealer Bid for $60.
Of course I won the auction for $51.

I went to the shop last night to pick up my card - and the Assistant Manager was there. He thought I was there to pick up the boxes - that he set aside for me. I explained about the Howe - and could he call down to the Distributor office to bring me the Auction win??? He looked at me dumb-founded and said what Howe???? He realized immediately which Howe - and the only words out of his mouth were ...
"That is really not cool to do that!!

I told him right there - that I agreed and that I did not think that I wanted any of the HP boxes at that moment - or maybe in the future. He totally agreed and asked me to give him a few days to see why this happened in the first place.

So I ask you my friends... Am I over-reacting???

1) If you follow my posts - you know that I crack my fair share of wax. I also sell a fair amount of my items that are not traded at auction - so I go through supplies as well. I do not publicize what I spend - but you can safely assume it is far more than a SUV payment. Every month. A very lasrge SUV... with 21's!
2) I buy 75% of my wax at this shop - with inflated prices since I am a kind of 'want it now' kind of guy. I do not like to wait for internet wax to come in. I can just as easily save 10-15% but I like dealing locally - as I sell to local people in my business - and it is 'good business' to do so.
3) please take this little poll and let me know what you think!!!!

PS: For everything I do spend there - they NEVER - EVER - NEVER throw me a bone. I mean - no specials, no neat cards once in a while - not a freaking thing.

bruce that is not cool i agree, and i had a store for 2 years and speaking on the dealer side,he should of been a little easier to deal with,he only gets 51.00 for a card that he could of used as a bone, bad dealer just counting the $$$$

Oh man I got more mad at them as I read on. They obviously don't care about your business. Get out of there and frequent the other shop. Your not a small time customer buying 3 packs of cards and a box of toploaders! They treat you horribly. Move on. Don't give them another dime.

Time to find a new shop. Why don't you contact MotorCitySportscards. I'm sure they could ship boxes to your house and have them there the next day since it's so close. Or a trip to Gibralter once a month. I know it's a bit of a jaunt but much better then dealing with someone who treats their customers like that. Definately find a new shop to frequent!!!

Bruce, not cool at all... sounds liek a local shop around here to a certain extent. The shop around here had a free credit month once a year (customer appreciation), but the owner certainly did not seem like he appreciated your business any other time fo the year, thats for sure. He lost a lot of my business because of it and the funny thing is, I don't think he even cared...

Anyways, time to move on Bruce. I know what you mean though about not wanting to wait... that was the reason I liked going there for the inflated prices too, but it just wasn't worth it...

Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere!!!! You cant change people, they are what they are. Unfortunately, the local shop is becoming less and less successful and over the years only the ruthless have survived. my 2 cents.

I agree with everyone else on the boards, its time to stop giving that man any buisness.. There is a new shop near me, im a hockey guy not in a hockey town and i started earning discounts the second time in and everytime since then.. And i spend no where near what you drop.. DIVORCE!!!!! Is my vote..
Tim..

Dude, gotta agree with everyone else. Go to the other shop, if you're already overpaying and don't seem to mind to much, then why not? The other place certainly can't treat you any worse?

Screw Divorce Bruce...they get half your stuff in the settlement. :D

Call out for an annulment if the asst manager isn't able to do anything in the way of helping, but I'm with the general consensus -- your business is better off left elsewhere.

yeah forget that place, they don't seem to want your business treating you like that. Nothing worse than grabbing ankles every time you go in :(

Next time you spend a load at the other shop, post your breaks then link the old crappy shop to this thread & the break thread. Show those buggers what its like :D

Go to the internet Bruce. I have ordered from Blowoutcards a few times and the stuff is there in 2 days usually. Also like Steve said head up to Gibralter once or twice a month.
No one needs to get slammed if you spend the cash there!!!

I'm going to approach this from a different direction.

People who spend a lot of money at a place seem to think that it is up to the recipient of that to treat them better than the average joe who "buys three packs of cards and some toploaders"

You should only be taking offense if you actually experienced that another customer was offered a different deal on that same Howe card than you were.

As a customer, I expect to be treated with the same courtesy as the guy who spends 10 times as much as me. That means I don't expect to see another customer offered a better deal on a specific card simply because they "are in there a lot".

Put yourself in the place of the "3 pack guy" who is just as big a fan, who goes in there and hears that card is $150 . And that's the best offer he's gonna get ;) Now imagine he overhears you getting it offered at $60, pretty crappy day...

Just my take. :)

I kinda agree with this. Your already getting your 20% "prefered customer discount"... and the guy has every right to do whatever he wants with the card.

I agree he was sleezy in what he did and how they "treated" you but I think your getting too offended that he turned your deal down. He could do whatever he wants and isn't obliged to blindly take your deal because your a good customer.

Hi Bruce. For the $$$ that you spent there, you were treated like dirt. I would not hesitate to stay away from there.

A shop owner in Saint John, NB Canada lost a friend of mine and I as customers about a month ago. Since this is your thread, I won't get into it in great detail. Let's just say that the owner took advantage of my friend on multiple occasions and also lied to him about me, so I took exception to it. I confronted the owner by email initially, then at the local market. Get this - he even wanted to "settle it once and for all in front of everyone at the market"! When he said that, I just laughed at him and sat down in my chair behind my table.

Considering that his shop is basically a small hole-in-the-wall shop, he cannot afford to lose 2 of his better customers like my friend and I. We each spent $100 or more on packs/singles nearly every time we went there. Do I care whether or not he goes under? Absolutely not!

It's really frustrating that we have psychos like that here especially when the card market in New Brunswick is suffering already. Card shops here are few and far between, and card shows are almost extinct.

Bruce,
I believe what they did to you was absolutely unbelievable! I would never and I mean NEVER set foot in that store again. We pride ourselves at gamebreakers in giving superior customer service, especially to the loyal customers who keep coming back. We trade ALL the time even for stuff we don't really need. It's all about keeping customers happy, plain and simple. Good on you for standing up to them!

Frank

Wow.
So you won it through eBay fair and square, and they didn't even give you the auto at the end? These guys are jackasses who cannot be trusted with an orange julius, never mind your business.

Go elsewhere. F' them.

The Gibratar shows are a great place to buy boxes (I know that w/trips there) and there is the internet as you know. Forget the card shop and buy smart.
