OK, against my better judgment, I sold to a bidder from Taiwan. Sent registered with tracking. $200 item. Two months go by, don't hear anything, I assume everything was good. I was doing some cleaning and I threw away a bunch of old postal receipts, including this one.

A week later, today, I get an e-mail from the guy. He's casting his line in the water, asking for a tracking number. Red flags go off, I know what this is. He got his card and now he wants the money too. He's setting up for a PayPal chargeback.

Does anyone know what my options are? Without the receipt, I would lose a PayPal case. PayPal's website says that buyers can file a chargeback within 45 calendar days, and that 45-day period passed over a month ago.

Additionally, he is registered with eBay as having a California address, but his mailing address is in Taiwan. I don't know if that matters, but I found that odd.

Am I screwed? Is there a way out of this? I shipped the guy's card and lived up to my part of the bargain. I just made the mistake of throwing the receipt away too soon.

Lesson learned - I won't ever ship anything without tracking, and I will keep the receipts in a file for a year before I throw them away.
Lesson learned - I won't see to bidders from Taiwan again.
Lesson learned - I won't allow international PayPal again.

It's already too late for him to do a chargeback.

That said... you SHOULD have entered the tracking number into Paypal's system as soon as the package was sent. Then, you wouldn't have to scramble around looking for receipts.

And I sure hope you're right about the chargeback thing. The PayPal website says 45 days, but I have a way of getting screwed over no matter what.

On the payment details page... look for the the link that says "Add Tracking Info."

I do that for all packages domestic and international.

I still keep the receipts around for a while, but that covers me in case someone files a chargeback when I'm out of town.

Tracking or not- if you ship to Taiwan you have ZERO coverage regardless with Paypal. Hopefully the 45 day time frame applies as well (assuming it wasn't via CC or bank acct via Paypal).

I've saved my postal receipts for the past year just because of that problem... there's always one or two idiots out there that will abuse the system... hope things work out for ya!

Lesson learned - I won't allow international PayPal again. <-- since i live in finland i am against that and in long run you will lose money if you pretty much block all finnish/swedish/etc bidders from your auctions.

They are hard and fast on the 45-day rule. I was on the other side of a purchase gone bad, out for about $110 or so. The seller stopped communicating with me on the 46th day and PP did absolutely nothing about it. Point is, if it's past the 45 days, PP won't help him.

Not true - if he paid through Paypal via Credit card or through his bank account he can file (after 45 days) through them who will in turn contact paypal and retreive the money.

I do what Jay and Bruce do, enter tracking numbers online in my PayPal site as well as save postal receipts for at leats 6 months.

Sorry to hear this. I hate dealing with suspect international bidders!
