Sitting on Unopened Wax as an Alternative Investment

Only Magic: The Gathering boxes are good investments. Hockey cards are hit or miss. And since players eventually retire, or hot rookies cool off, and star players get injured, that can really affect box values.

Also redemptions expire as well. And since sealed boxes become rarer as more of them are opened, their price resides heavily on rarity. If you sit on cases, as soon as you try to cash out and offer the product for sale, you basically flood your own market and kill the rarity that is holding up that price.

I'm buying a decent amount of S1 and will probably sit on about 10-15% of the wax for kicks. It's not as though I'll be putting my 401k into play buying and holding wax, but just a little way to take a shot with some product I'm already buying. I also won't be holding for a period of 10 years, that's for sure!

UD S1 is not a good investment. This year's will be awful, last year's will be awful, 11-12 has a weak class and is too high priced already, 08-09 and 09-10 are stuck at about the same price since they were released, 07-08 is not good since Carey Price went down, 06-07 is cheap...only the under-ordered 05-06 went way up and now has come back down a bit.

The best investments are UD S2, once in a while, when one strong rookie is in UD S2. 06-07, 07-08 and 10-11 were good short term (couple years). The other S2s actually go down.
