Wow, I didn't even realize Topps was planning to do this. I play their MLB (Bunt) and NFL (Huddle) versions.

It's very similar to Upper Deck's epack, except that it also has a game aspect. Instead of getting the free base pack like Upper Deck gives you, you get a certain number of coins each day. And of course, you can pay a lot more real money if you want a lot more coins to use. It depends on how often they keep up with it, but in addition to a base set, they'll have special inserts and contest prizes. In their other apps, they have "autographed" and "game used" ecards, but I don't really understand the appeal since there is no possible physical card to get.

There is also trading, but it can be pretty cutthroat.

Anyway, I'd encourage members here to try it before knocking it. I've played the other two without putting down a dime, and I get enough enjoyment out of them that I've now downloaded Skate as well.

I don't care what it is, I only hope and pray this signals a POSSIBLE return to hockey cards for Topps sometime in the near future. Their products are just stellar.

Topps lost their NFL license for the 2016 season, but still run their Huddle app. I'm not sure what the difference is, but apparently these apps and their ability to print licensed cards are unrelated.

But I would also welcome a Topps return.

While Topps has made some of my favourite stuff EVER, I have grave concerns if they were to return to hockey.

Any worse than UD's tomfoolery in a solo market? Topps is the biggest gun in sports cards, the MLB license is massive revenue relative to trading cards. I believe they could push UD, they would push UD, in a positive way. But I'm just over here in my armchair throwing passes, whatta I know?

I've heard bucketloads of grousing from baseball fans over various bits of bumblery from Topps - really not much worse than anything of which we accuse UD.

My concerns arise from watching how they've handled their non-sport licenses. And also from the fact that they've been OUT of hockey for a good 12 years now. They're going to be starting from (close to) zero on all fronts. Do we really need a repeat of the Panini story in the hobby?

I downloaded the app just to check it out and my starter pack gave me a McDavid card. If I enter his card into the contests does that mean I "use up" the card and lose it, or can I just continue entering it all season long because it's in my collection now?

You can use it all year long if it's anything like the Huddle/Bunt apps.

For anyone who jumps in - my username is KMITCHELL - I also can trade in all the other Topps apps as well (I don't do TWD). Mainly play in Huddle/Bunt/SWCT - collect in Slam and get coins in Kick/KO

Looking for reds in Huddle, Teals in Slam and some stuff in SWCT - have coins in Kick if anyone wants me to blow through mine for something. Stuff for trade in all the other apps.

KMITCHELL in Slam / Kick / Bunt / SWCT / NHL
KMITCHELL-UFC in Knockout
KMITCHELLNFL in Huddle

WhatsupSigma for Skate and Slam. WhatsupForce for SWCT.
I was skeptical initially, but I'm quite enjoying this offering of Topps digital goodness so far.

I used to play the soccer version Kick a lot. These games are insanely popular the soccer, baseball and ootball versions are huge. So excited to play this thanks for the post!!!

I feel Topps is the only company who could legitimately compete with UD long-term in hockey and they have some terrific innovations that brought to the table. I also appreciate the Panini factor your brought up. That would NOT be good. But that's another topic for another time if it ever happens. I'll just leave it at there are a LOT of people who want Topps back in hockey and this thread just evoked some of that desire.

PENS1FANADDICT on Skate
WALTERWEBSTER3 on Huddle

It does say it is the offical app of NHL and NHLPA so I suppose there is a license they had to purchase?

Topps certainly has the clout to compete well with UD long term. That's not to say ITG isn't a legitimate competitor; I credit that to Dr. Price and company's commitment to the hobby. Topps has been courted by the NHL and NHLPA for licensure, and Topps has consistently (reportedly) replied "no".

A disinterested company isn't a good thing for the hobby.

As soon as I saw this App I wondered if it was the Topps approach to testing the market. To see if they are still relevant with hockey fans. To see if their digital designs invoke comments like "Man, I wish that was an actual real card I could have!!" If they receive positive feedback for this app, then next time they are courted by the NHL/NHLPA they may say "Yes!"

I would love, absolutely LOVE, to see the Topps Heritage franchise return to the hockey world
