Some Input re: The Charlton Guide...

Back in the early years of collecting ,a close friend of mine had ths Guide and I've been meaning to acquire one.Does anyone know the latest edition and or a place to acquire one.
I know collectors have their own"bibles" that they go by,how many out there use the Charlton?

I like it much more the than the big Beckett simply because I find it much, much easier to find the set your looking for. Its organized by year and then alphabetically rather than just alphabetically(beckett).
 
The great thing about the Charleton is that I've seen pricings for cards with a print run as low as 5. I haven't actively looked at 1/1's or anything to see if they list those, and I would assume that the pricing is mainly arbitrary, but that being said, I'd say the pricing in Beckett is purely arbitrary too, and not based on any actual research....:owned:
 
Apparently there was a recent change in management - so there wasn't one this year. Hopefully a new one will come shortly

That is what I was told last year as I called Charlton Press to find out what was happening with the price guide - as many already know, the yearly Beckett is brutal to navigate (maybe the same guy developed their new web-site).

The lady I spoke to at the time was not sure if the new CSC folks were going to pursue a new Charlton.

I have a waiting list of customers hoping they do.
 
I have bought the Charlton guide in the past, but only for the ease of finding sets for checklists. I don't use it for pricing at all.

As for their pricing, if you think Beckett is out of touch with reality, then Charlton's is on a different planet (although it's all hocus-pocus anyway).

At least the Charlton explains how they achieved their pricing - it's all formulaic.

The only formula Beckett seems to use at times is hocus + pocus = confused consumers.
 
The formulaic pricing is out of whack and way too convoluted... you can thank Richard Scott for that! He didn't exactly guide CSC through its brightest years... anyone remember the big ruler scanned into every issue?

Well you can crap on him all you want but I have a waiting list for people who want a Charlton. I have never once had a customer tell me how great the annual Beckett is - none. That speaks volumes IMO.
 
The format of the Charlaton is easier to read than Beckett, and overall the book is far better than the big beckett if you don't mind some of the nutty prices in it. As nice a guy as he was, Scott was a boob when it came to pricing cards.

At least knowing this about Scott.. I always enjoyed the Charlton as what it should be called..

'A Reference Book', cause it is a much easier guide to use..
 
Jeff Morris and Baron Bedesky running the Charlton will give it the edge it needs to get back from the depths that Richard Scott sunk it to.

There is no doubt that people need a new and updated Charlton. I never implied that the Beckett version was better at all...
 
Ok here's the sitch with Charlton.

The 16th edition (Roy mask cover) was the last one printed under the R.S. regime. In 2006, Trajan sold CSC to Jeff Morris, who briefly kept Scott on staff before Scott moved on. Baron was brought on board and the two have been running the magazine since.

In regards to Charlton, there were a lot of complaints over changes that were being made to it (compare, say, 11 to 15 and you'll see a marked difference). From what I understand, it's the intention of Jeff and Baron to do another Charlton, but they needed to let the memory of the last book fade.

As for getting the latest one, Jeff and Baron may bring a couple copies up to the Expo. you can try emailing them as well. otherwise, somewhere like DA Card World might have copies.
