I'd rather see it on boxing day, more people will be home, I'd enjoy it more on Boxing Day.

I get the tradition of commencing on Boxing Day. However, with the start moved to the right, it allows the players to hopefully spend Christmas with their families.

I like it, i would rather watch it on Boxing Day. I'm off Boxing Day and its a relax day at my house, New Year's Eve is crazy busy. Works better for me.

New Years Eve, Boxing Day... Don't make me no never mind, I'll be watching regardless.

Unless it's an early morning game... Boxing Day sales may put a crimp in the plans.

It doesn't happen every year, especially when it is in Europe. It's up to the host committee and the IIHF to set the schedule. And this schedule is usually done with TSN's cooperation - since they by far pay the most for the TV rights to the WJHC. All of Canada's games look to be at around 1 ET based on the schedule unless they face Finland before the final.

I don't like the move myself. I'm getting old and crusty and having this game on New Years Eve has been our tradition since we don't go out and party like we used to. We always make some good food and enjoy the game, now I'm probably going to get stuck going out on NYE, ba hum bug.....

On a different note, why is this tournament hosted by Canada every other year now? Seems a bit unfair to all the other "major" participants? I know Switzerland was going to host a few years ago but withdrew, but why not let Canada, Russia, Finland, Sweden, USA, and the Czech's and maybe Slovak's rotate every year? I get that they want to make money because that seems to be the main objective anymore, but having it hosted every other year in Canada seems quite unfair to the other countries.

I believe that the Toronto/Montreal bid for this year was off the charts - since Edmonton/Calgary in 2012 guaranteed $6M to Hockey Canada. That combined with the TV rights that TSN pays pretty much ensures that North America will see it just about every other year until one of the European federations can generate that kind of cash flow

Does Hockey Canada own the tournament, or rights to the tournament? Just trying to understand why any other hockey team/country would care what the guaranteed payout is to Hockey Canada? I understand why it would matter to the IIHF, but I must be missing something on the payout to H.C.?

Tony - I think Art's comment about the payout to Hockey Canada was an aside to the issue, just providing extra information.

It's basically being held in Canada so often because it's the only country that makes money for everyone. You just have to look at the stands of most of the games to see that.

The IIHF makes craploads of money when it's in Canada, and by extension, H.C. does too, as would U.S.A. Hockey if they held a successful tournament.

When you throw in the coinage that TSN throws at the thing, having it in Canada every other year makes total sense.

There is probably massive headache for hosting this tourney as well. A lot of countries may not be willing to put up with the headache for low financial reward, or god forbid, the risk of a loss.
