How was Philly determined to be first in their division over the Pens? They both ended with 106 pts but the Pens had 49 regular wins compared to Philly's 47.

Philadelphia had 44 regulation/overtime wins, Pittsburgh only had 39.

I thought the total wins was the first tie-breaker and then the win in regulation and overtime.
But in fact it is the wins in regulation and overtime and then the season results between the 2 teams.

Yes, tie-breaker is non-shootout wins.

Rule change for this season. When two teams are tied for points, the team with the most regulation/overtime wins gets the nod.

I guess the NHL finally came to their senses and realized the circus show was not the be-all-end-all, and that a team should be rewarded for actually winning the game the way it was to be played, and not have a sport where it is theoretically possible for a team to go 82-0 without a single player on the team getting credited with a goal (yes, I know it is an extreme example, but it is correct).

A few years ago, before the shootout, the Canucks needed a win instead of a tie in a late season game and pulled the goalie in OT to try and get the 2 points and were scored on. I *BELIEVE* it was the April 7, 2000 game.

Similarly, in the last game of the 1989-90 regular season, the Penguins only needed to tie Buffalo to make the playoffs. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation and went to overtime where the Sabres promptly scored to end the Penguins season (obviously it wouldn't have been with the goalie pulled since they only needed the tie).

The consolation prize for such a heartbreaking loss and being one of the five teams that missed the playoffs? Drafting Jaromir Jagr with the 5th overall pick in that summer's draft and winning the next two Stanley Cups ... in retrospect, I'll take it.
