SP Authentic Being Ruined

I took a break from the hobby and have just come back over the last 6 months or so. I used to break a lot and i WANT to break something but i can't justify any UD product at their current pricing. This is now another product that i have zero interest in breaking.

some pricing and math on the current case prices.

16-17 SPA - Guaranteed 2 Autos a box X 16 boxes = 32 guaranteed autos + a chance to get 3 autos in some boxes.
15-16 SPA - Guaranteed 3 Autos a box x 12 boxes = 36 guaranteed autos
14-15 SPA - Guaranteed 3 Autos a box x 12 boxes = 36 guaranteed autos AND the update Auto normally didn't count as one of the 3 hits.

Current case base pricing (CDN) from <large canadian retailer in Ontario - not sure if i'm allowed to post the name>

16-17 - $1959.99
15-16 - $1979.99
14-15 - $1509.99

Pre-order pricing for 15-16 was lower, but I don't have any records of what the pricing was. I can't remember if the 14-15 pre-order price was higher or lower than the current price.

Also, if anybody has the FWA count per case per year, that would be handy as well.
I don't have evidence to back it up, but I believe there's less FWAs in 15-16 than there was in 14-15.

Depending on what you collect, there are some killer deals on older wax.

OPC Platinum 14-15 jumbo boxes for around 100$, some all-hits Leaf products with 50% discount. Panini 13-14 products are fun and affordable too.

It's the "new" hobby. Group breakers are the people being catered to now. That's why we see hit only products. It takes too long to break cases with multi packs of base, inserts, etc.

I hate it but I understand why UD is going in this direction. I'm slowly being pushed out of this hobby. It's probably a good thing anyway. I'll spend my money on more meaningful stuff :)

Amen.

Thanks for the suggestions I'll have to look into these. I have seen some ITG Used that looks good but its very expensive here and i don't have a lot of local options, especially ones that carry older stuff.

I think you're going to see group breaking, at least in some forms, cease as it is determined to be gambling.

There are other things that UD does that is not-legal, such as expiration of redemption cards. So much so, that somebody has won a lawsuit against UD.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a class-action lawsuit from all of the LCS/Distributors because expired redemptions hurt the value of the product and makes it harder to sell. I'm sure there are a bunch of us that simply don't purchase older product because of expired redemptions.

Can you back this up? IF you are referring to loyalty cards, this is not the same thing.. but can you provide back up for this statement please?

Wow! they really need to hire more competent accountant and lawyers.
1.5 Millions of unpaid NFL players!

There is now a law in Canada that any gift certificates cannot expire. It should be the same with redemption cards.

Thanks for this. I have contacts in the competition bureau here in Canada and have asked them this question regarding CDN law and redemptions.. I hope I get an answer.

While he did win the case by default, he did ask that the case be heard anyways.

I don't have the transcript for the case, but based on the comments from the Judge, UD needs to post the redemption expiration date on the product itself for the customer to see before purchase. Something akin to "This product contains redemptions for autographs that expire on DD/MM/YYYY".

I'm not sure if the expiration itself is an issue with that state (Michigan).

Ok maybe an American based Lawyer can help me answer this question.
If you win a case but the defendant does not pay, what happens then? Can they just NOT pay the monies owed? I am confused by this.

The problem is that a Michigan small claims court has no means to enforce the judgement in California, where UD is based. The plaintiff must submit the Michigan judgement to the California court holding jurisdiction over Carlsbad (UD HQ) and request enforcement. There are usually fees associated with the latter action.

This was a small claims civil judgement and is not subject to class action. UD is not required to do anything.

Most importantly, this case did not determine that expired redemptions are "illegal", it merely ruled that one individual had been financially harmed because the packing did not inform him of expiration dates.

Make no mistake, Upper Deck DOES NOT CARE about single box breakers. They are pushing the price to the maximum that they can to accommodate group breakers.
