sadly .. ebay.. and for the record, Beckett may be frowned upon but you would be surprised how many people still refer to it. I see it all the time at shows and the expo.

Yes, many people at the expo were selling based on beckett prices, which was why many people didn't have strong sales. So many cards were overpriced at the expo my brother and I had quite the laugh about it.
I had the opposite effect. People had their own magazines, looked up card prices in beckett and bought my stuff immediately LOLOL..
So there are always 2 sides to coin... I prefer it to work out this way 90% of the time LOLOOL

For those that do not think Beckett has any influence on today's hobby.All you have to do is watch eBay sales of new product when it is first released.Than watch sales immediately after Beckett releases the new pricing on said product.Prices obtained are in some cases cut in half. Is it just a coincidence,maybe.But I believe they are related.Once collectors see what cards are listed for than their willingness to spend is reduced.

Winston, as is usually the case, is bang-on. All it takes is for those folks to publish a semi-hot YG as a common and suddenly you see eBay BIN listings accordingly, which are naturally snapped up instantly by astute collectors that realize the price is a fraction of actual sales prices from the previous two weeks.

Yep, my LCS still sells a crapload of Beckett magazines. People still do refer to it frequently. I hate the magazine, myself. I wish we had an alternate, more accurate one to use

Beckett was perfect before the whole online buying took off. There was no other way of determining a value. I think a lot of people that still buy Beckett it's for the box breaks, big pulls, and the card info before the pricing. I always like reading through that.

I last bought one several years ago. It really hasn't troubled me. I go by a really simple rule: If I think the price is fair, I buy. Anything else? Counteroffer or walk away. Works remarkably well.

This is exactly the case. For so many years Beckett prices were so over inflated that collectors got used to purchasing at 50% guide. When they decided to try and right the ship and base their pricing off of ebay sales people instantly thought they were still over pricing and thus caused sales to drop even further. Beckett is still just a guide but there are still alot of people who look at it as the gospel.
I had someone at expo inquire about my Lundqvist Ultimate rc. When I stated Beckett listed it at $100 and offered it at $80 the person laughed at me. I checked ebay and the only completed listing for one was $125. When I got home I listed mine and sold it for $125 as well and it lasted less than 48 hours. Go figure.

I find the biggest problem with the Beckett users is they always go by the high price to trade/sell when in most cases they should be looking at the low price. Ebay is still the best way to estimate whay a card would sell for, but all depends on wahts for sale and who wants it at the time of the listing.
These are all great points and one thing I have to note is that quite a few people use the becketts to track the older harder to find inserts. Especially baseball guys.,

As long as both parties agree on which kind of value to go by, it's all good. I had someone last month try trading their card to me based on beckett value (his booked in beckett for $500), for my card which was based on sell value (sells for $500). So he basically offered a $200 card for a $500 card.
