Steve Mason....

Mason has not been good.

But this is more the story of an entire team in a full-blown sophomore slump.

I won't point fingers and say it's Hitchcock's fault, or Nash's fault, or Howson's fault, or Mason's fault ... any internet jockey pretending to know the answers is a fool.

I'll just hope they get it figured out sooner rather than later.
 
Mase is not playing well, defense is not playing well, everybody besides Jake and Umberger :cool: are not playing well.

That all started since Filatov left for Russia.

Some says Hitch has lost the room, Howson says that's not the case. But there is a problem in that team, no doubt about that.

I don't know how they could fix this, they won't trade Jake, Brassard or any prospects, they won't fire Hitch :foottap:... They need a miracle!
 
I would agree that it is a team thing failing and all around slump.More so than just a one person However most rookies do have a slump as well.Price,setoguchi,meuller are good example's and some take time to bounce back.
There's still more than half a season so I can see Mason getting his act together.He is extremely talented ,no doubt about that.This Garon thing is not the right goalie to go along with Mason though.My 2 cents on that,he needs a better veteren tutor.
Hitch whether he likes it or not may bear the brunt of it very soon though.Hope not but it might go down that way.Either way this is a young and talented team,no where to go but up.LA was the same thing a few years ago and look now.Maybe another couple of veteren guys in the clubhouse might settle it down a bit as well.
Only thing I saw a few times this year has been 4 guys chasing one opponent around the net lol.Now what is going to happen if you do that?

I have Mason in my fantasy pool and he gets pulled about as much as Dan Cloutier used to.

Columbus has fallen off ie: they overachieved last year, but Mason has been a huge reason why they're so bad. I've watched a few of their games, and remember seeing the Rangers score on Mason as if he wasn't even there. That being said, he has only had a handful of truly atrocious games, and that happens to every 'tender.

Call it sophomore jinx or lack of interest or whatever you want, but I don't remember Price ever being as awful as Mason has been this season.
 
This reminds me of the Carey Price thread last year. It's the team, not just one player. Just wait out the storm and laugh in the end.
 
See even Sholi agree's..:)But He's right, look at the Habs ,teams do bounce back.And the Jackets are young too.But the big point is it is a "team"sport so the whole team needs to make adjustments.:)

Mason's got a .887 (second worst in the NHL) and a 3.41 going right now. To pin it all on the team's play ain't right. He's not doing his job.

Were you expecting them to be good? They have Nash, and thats it. Heres their scoring leaders right now:

Nash 35
Vermette 27
Umberger 26
Huselius 25
Voracek 22
Brassard 19
Stralman 18

Mason is sporting a 3.41, .997save %. Those are early 90's starters numbers at best.

The team as a whole is playing poorly, however, they have almost nothing to work with. Not to mention, the West is STACKED this year. Those two facts combined = a not so hot year.
 
Hmm... good point.

Well I guess they either need more scoring or one of the handful of goalies in the game who can win with one goal of support, right?

He'll pick his individual play up, but I think the Jackets are doomed this year... playing in a division with Chicago has got to suck big time.

Wow damn nice sig you got there. I dont think I have ever even seen the black.

That is what seperates good goalies from great goalies. Good goalies (fleury, Ward, et al) play to their teams standards. When the team is awesome, they get shutouts, when the team is bad, they sport 3.50 GAA's and save %'s under .890. Great goalies carry their team through everything.

Think of Hasek from the 90's sabres teams VS. Osgood from the 90's Wings

I would have taken osgood on my team any day (especialyl over Mike Dunham or Dan Blackburn), but some goalies are on another llevel.
 
Not trying to start a pissing match here, but reading this thread reminds me of the off-season, when countless number of board members were calling for Mason to be on Team Canada as the backup goalie (or the third goalie).

Hopefully for Mason it is just a sophmore slump, and he will 'get it back' soon.
 
The CBJ have no defence.
The CBJ have no scoring.
The CBJ play in a stacked conference (only 2 teams are below .500)

Mason's stats make him look horrible, but the aforementioned intangibles speak more to his year than his stats do.
 
Mason is also keeping quiet now as he did call out teammates a few weeks ago and was thoroughly ripped for it. The guy is still good, but he's not going to save games on his own. Hopefully Columbus can put it together...

That's not good at all. Tyutin is probably the only keeper there. With Russell and Klesla only's only focus is pushing and shooting the puck that makes a bad situation worse.

Until the Blue Jackets focus on building a solid D line they will never advance.

When Hitch decided to not play Filatov they should have traded him. It def caused issues, they have a young team. They still should put together something to move one of their offensive defensemen and Filatov for at least one solid D Men.

The only untouchables should only be Nash, Mason and maybe Voracek and Brassard.

I just hope they turn things around soon, buy into the system and play better D.
