Well, I started hearing things last night, but couldn't confirm with our attourney, and now it has been confirmed. Strikeforce, an MMA promotion based out of Northern California and owned by Scott Coker (owner of the San Jose Sharks), has purchased "select" assets of Proelite, who is home to MMA stars Robbie Lawler, Gina Carrano, Nick Diaz, and Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Furgeson. Since Proelite ran out of money in late October 2008, there have been two companies competing to buy Proelite, Strikeforce and King Of The Cage.

There is a ton of speculation as to what the purchase includes, but nothing has been officially released yet. However, I can tell you that it includes the television deals for Showtime and CBS. Since we (King Of The Cage) lost the bid, I don't know what the Strikeforce deal includes. I have already submitted my interview with MMA referee Cecil Peoples for the March issue of Insiders Edge, but my interview for April will be with KOTC owner Terry Trebilcock where I'll talk to him about everything from starting KOTC to the financial fiasco that caused the downfall of Proelite.

This is huge in the U.S MMA market. 3 top level players: UFC, Affliction, and Pro-Elite. Its getting better all the time. I see a possible merger in the future between 2 of the 3 to enhance their org.

I think it's great that Strikeforce got the Showtime/CBS deal. They actually know how to run a business. I just hope that now that they have this deal that they don't get stupid. They put on really good shows, and I look forward to seeing more of them.

My understanding of the deal is this, Strikeforce bought the Showtime deal and select fighter contracts (Kimbo, Carano, Lawler, plus a handful of others) from Proelite, and that's it. The deal does not call for any shows on CBS.

If as the reports are saying they are actually able to get Gina and Robbie under contract (as they are already in discussions) I can see CBS deciding to try another primetime special with Stikeforce. Again I just hope Scott Coker doesn't stray far from his business model that's been working for quite some time now.

The thing I like best about Scott Coker is that he puts on shows at the Playboy mansion

After viewing a replay of Nick Diaz v.s Robbie Lawler from their UFC fight last night on Spike, there has to be a rematch!

It won't happen. Robbie has put on way too much weight since that fight. The rematch would have to be at 170, which would require Nick to actually put weight on, and I think Robbie would struggle to get down that far.

I've heard that Strikeforce is planning on having Frank Shamrock fight in the main event, and one of the names being tossed around as a possible opponent is Nick Diaz. That would likely have to be a catch-weight fight as Frank fights at 185 too. I think that Robbie and Nick could do the same thing; however, I doubt that they will.

Frank and Nick would be a terrible fight if it were to happen. They need to concentrate on their specific weight classes and stop looking for these "Super Fights". The fight date is April 11th. That's still two months away and more than enough time to find a siutable opponent for both Nick and Frank.

The fight is official Frank Shamrock vs. Nick Diaz on April 11, catch-weight of 179lbs. It's kind of eery that they announced it just hours after we discussed it.
Here's the link to the Sherdog story.

Looks as though they are setting up another really solid card beneath that main event. I would love to see Gil Melendez fight Ishida.

Terrible decision to put that fight on, just terrible.

I think Nick is gonna be game for this fight. He has an outstanding work ethic and in the cage he is always mentally focused, and these characteristics should help him to evolve as a martial artist for a next level challenge like Frank Shamrock.

It would be cool to see Cung Lee getting matched up against Lawler.

I'm sure Nick will be game for the fight, I just think it's pointless. The fight does nothing for either fighter in their respective weight class. I think Frank would be better off fighting "Ninja" Rua and Nick should be facing Eddie Alvarez.

Cung Lee VS Robbie Lawler would be freakin' awesome!

Actually, KJ Noons needs to fight Nick Diaz again, I just don't think he'll do it.

I don't think that Nick should be fighting at lightweight. He could barely (and once didn't) make the stupid lightweight weight limit for Elite XC. He should be fighting at welterweight.
