Summer NHL Trades/Transactions

Blackhawks trade Anisimov. Looks like Kirby Dach is your new 2nd line Crntet. Good move here by the Hawks. Tram is looking pretty good, if Boquist makes it up this year it could get very interesting.

I think Strome is the second line center next year, he and DeBrincat developed good chemistry last year. If Dach makes the team, which I think is a stretch right now, they won’t throw him in that role. If he makes it I could see him on the fourth line to get him acclimated with a veteran like Smith and maybe Kampf or Perlini on the other wing and see how he does at NHL speed. Third line will be their grinders with Carpenter at center I’d imagine.

Maple Leafs acquire Clarkson from Vegas for Sparks

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-acquired veteran forward David Clarkson and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. Toronto sent backup goalie Garret Sparks to the Golden Knights as part of the deal.

The 35-year-old Clarkson last played with the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2015-16 season after suffering a career-ending injury.

Welcome back to Robidas Island, David Clarkson, from your friends Nathan Horton, and Joffrey Lupul. The fishing is good here, and the beer is ice cold!

So is this a case where the Leafs start the season without Marner in the lineup, then after 2 games the Horton/Clarkson cap hit comes off and they sign Marner to a deal?

I’m trying to figure out what Montreal is doing too. They have 15 forwards signed not including Poehling who you’d think has to be a starter. Any rumblings about more trades in MTL?

It's very strange, but Toronto has the best capologists in the business, so I have to assume there is another deal coming? If not, Marner will not be in the lineup for game #1, and will not have any training camp, or pre-season games. Both Clarkson's, and Horton's contract move to LTIR opening day ($10.55 million, I've heard). Something is gonna go down, and soon. Even signing Michal Neuvirth, it will just be a wash with the moving of the Sparks contract. Where are they shedding salary to fit Marner's $11 million? They will get a bit of relief with Dermott, and Hyman missing a speculated month (not sure how much, but someone mentioned $3 million between the pair. That still leaves $7-$8 short for a Marner contract. What is Dubas up to? Hmmmm!

You have to be an NHL contract/rules specialist to understand how this craziness works. I’ve spent way too much time trying to understand how it works, makes sense why these guys make what they do to go to school and understand all the details. Some days I sit back and wish sports paid you a base salary and then bonuses for performance. It would wipe out the huge cap hit contracts but it would be way harder to stay within the cap restraints. :|

Whatever all this craziness means, it all comes down to there must be a number that they have to get Marner to? I would be shocked if they didn't get Marner either signed, or traded somewhere in training camp time frame. There's no way they let him sit until the deadline that will force him to sit out the entire year. Maybe they've asked him to wait until a certain date, in order to get all the nickels, and dimes in place? Who knows, but as a Leafs fan, I'm concerned, but i have to put trust in Dubas, and his team to get this done.

So, according to NHL analyst Mike Johnson, acquiring the Clarkson contract gives the Leafs $10.55 million in LTIR for him, and Horton. They have found out that because these two are definitely injured, and will be placed on LTIR at the start of the season, the Leafs can actually be over the cap by that amount over the summer, knowing that amount will drop off at game #1. I knew Dubas, and company had a plan. This makes more sense now.

Can someone help me here, understanding the Clarkson thing?

Here's what I understand: There is a cap ceiling (81.5 million). During the summer, teams may go 10% over - so total team salary (before game 1) can be as high as 89.65 million. Players on LTIR count towards the 89.65

The Leaf's total salary right now (including Horton, Clarkson, and Phil Kessel) is 83.66 million.

I assume they can make paper moves to take Dermott, Gauthier, and Agostio off the roster, and free up 2.24 million. That puts them (around) 81.42 million. I don't understand how, on paper, they can sign Marner for anymore than 8.23 million - today.

I get why the Clarkson move is good for them. The LTIR relief is calculated based on the total salaries of the team, not the upper limit of the cap (well, which ever is lower). If they don't trade for Clarkson, they wouldn't have full relief for Horton.

Is it because of how long they've been on LTIR they don't count again the Cap + 10% Summer overage?

Did you watch the video I posted above? It explains that they are allowed to exceed the cap by $10.55 million this summer, because both Horton, and Clarkson are legit injured, and will definitely be on LTIR on the first day of the season. There are other ways to get cap relief for them. They can put guys in the AHL, and go with a 21 man roster on the big club, plus they will not have to count against the cap the salary of Hyman, and Dermott, who will be out a month, I think I read that alone gets them $3 million relief between the two of them.

In a nutshell, the can actually be $10.55 million over the cap until the season starts, and that $10.55 million moves to LTIR. It looks like they could sign Marner, I'm guessing they are waiting for some reason, maybe they need to get to a certain date to make this all work? It's also possible they will wait till game 1 to sign Marner, it's all way too complicated for us to understand, but I think Dubas, and staff have it figured out, we just have to wait, and see.

Lightning sign Maroon to 1-year deal worth $900k

The Tampa Bay Lightning have inked forward Pat Maroon to a one-year contract worth $900,000, the team announced on Saturday.

"We're very pleased to add Pat to our organization today," said Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois. "He brings size (6-foot-3, 225 lbs) and physicality to our group as well as significant playoff experience. We expect Pat to be a great addition to the roster."

Maroon signed a one-year deal with his hometown St. Louis Blues ahead of the 2018-19 season, and he played an important role while helping the club capture its first-ever Stanley Cup.

Hurricanes sign Gardiner to 4-year deal with $4.05M AAV

The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Jake Gardiner to a four-year contract with an average annual value of $4.05 million, the team announced Friday.

Gardiner, formerly of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was arguably the top player available at his position this summer.

The $4.05-million cap hit is the same amount Gardiner received in each of the last five seasons with Toronto. He'll join a Hurricanes team that already boasts a loaded defensive corps featuring the likes of Jaccob Slavin, Dougie Hamilton, Brett Pesce, and Justin Faulk.

However, Carolina may need to move a player out to become cap compliant. With Gardiner entering the fold, the Hurricanes have a projected cap hit of just over $83 million, according to Cap Friendly.

All the money going to top end players making the fitting others under the cap difficult. Mid level guys/good players like Gardiner aren't realizing the big paydays that they hoped for. IMO, he should have been able to get more than 4 million per.

Defenceman Josh Morrissey signs eight-year extension with Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have signed defenceman Josh Morrissey to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of US$6.25 million.

The Jets announced the move on Thursday, one day before the start of training camp.

The Calgary-born Morrissey, 24, had one year left on a two-year contract with a cap hit of $3.15 million.

Morrissey had a career-high 31 points (six goals, 25 assists) in 59 games with the Jets last season.

A first-round pick (13th overall) by the Jets in 2013, Morrissey was third on the team in average ice time last season at 22 minutes 24 seconds.

Morrissey returns to a Jets blueline that lost Jacob Trouba, Tyler Myers and Ben Chiarot during the off-season.

Wild re-sign Fiala to 2-year, $6M contract

The Minnesota Wild re-signed restricted free-agent forward Kevin Fiala to a two-year, $6-million contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Fiala was acquired in a deadline deal with the Nashville Predators in exchange for Mikael Granlund. The trade was made by ex-Wild general manager Paul Fenton, who had previously been the assistant GM in Nashville.

Penguins re-sign Marcus Pettersson to one-year deal

Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Marcus Pettersson to a one-year, one-way deal and will have him in training camp. Pettersson accepted his qualifying-offer salary of $874,125. GM Jim Rutherford released a short statement on the deal:

Marcus is a smart, reliable defenseman who improved our defensive corps after coming over from Anaheim last year. We are fortunate to have a good, young defenseman of his caliber in our top-six.
