Tanguay out 4 weeks

DENVER (Ticker) -- If the Colorado Avalanche hope to win the Northwest Division, they may have to do so without leading scorer Alex Tanguay.

The Avalanche on Tuesday learned that Tanguay will be sidelined up to four weeks with a sprained right knee.

Tanguay, 26, suffered the injury in the first period of Colorado's 6-5 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. An MRI on Tuesday revealed no serious structural damage.

An All-Star in 2004, Tanguay has 26 goals and a team-leading 48 assists in 67 games this season.

Tanguay's injury could not have come at a worse time for the Avalanche (38-25-6), who trail the first-place Calgary Flames by two points in the division standings.





Colorado will already be without rookie sensation and leading goal scorer Marek Svatos, who is out for the remainder of the season with a fractured right shoulder.

That's going to hurt Colorado a lot. Hope he gets back quicker than that.

That certainly stinks, Alex was having a great season I guess it is time for Sakic and especailly Hejduk, to ramp things up. Seems from the last couple games that Joe is ready for the challenge, Hejduk needs to get moving now.

Dude the WHOLE team needs to pick it up, except maybe Sakic and Budaj. People may have forgotten Svatos is gone for the year as well and Josie the Pussycat is sidelined (he's a bum anyways).

The Av's are really hurting in the stretch drive.......

With Svatos already out and now tie in Tanguay this is going to make things a wee bit harder for the Avs. I am still interested to see how this goalie thing plays out the rest of this season and next year. Do the Avs have anyone decent in the system waiting in the wings?

Vitaly Kolesnik and Tyler Weiman are in the Av's system, both decent goaltenders, worth a shot in the NHL.

This year will be tight...but next year we should see Wojtek Wolski on the Ice for the Av's -- him plus a healthy Svatos should be a winning forward combination.

Losing Alex now stinks, but whatcha gonna do?
