Tavares inks a 3 year deal with the Islanders

Mark Streit and they used Weight there also when he was healthy. They are hoping Hillen becomes an option there also.

Ya, Streit is really one of the top powerplay guys in he league and I don't think I am too biased. They actually have some ok 3-7 depth guys as well. The cupboard isn't that bare, just no top d-men in the future except for De Haan or someone else blooming brighter than expected.

Well, don't forget, Tavares could theoretically refuse to sign, sit out two years, then go back in the draft and be drafted by likely whomever the cellar dweller is then. What did he gain? He'll never be able to enter the NHL market as a free agent. As Art stated, just get your career started and move toward that unbound monetary contract at the age of 25.

The Islanders will also have a chance to get better in the next few years if their drafting has been solid. It doesn't hurt to play on an up and coming team and be top dog on the team early in your career - it'll teach him more than being under some other superstars wing.

everyone is crushing the islanders cause they have been at the bottom for a while. and saying either tavares shouldnt go to long island (pre draft) and that he should leave after his contract is up. Just because he is a highly touted overall number one pick going to a bad team? I dont get it what does everyone have against them?

Take a look at Pittsburgh (I m not trying to bash the pens but they were the easiest for me to show an example in comparison)

They were the worst team in the league two years in a row in 82-83 and 83-84. First pick in the draft in 84 was Lemiuex. Even with him it took another couple of seasons to make it back to the playoffs (88-89 season i believe). Lemieux rebuilt that team and it took a while. Was it that players didnt care of where they went back then? no one probably thought of refusing to play for a team back then until lindros came along (which worked out real well for the Nordique/Avalanche franchise)

These same penguins finished last place in the division four years in a row from 01-02 through 05-06. They had the lowest attendence in the league in 03-04. they filed bankruptcy back in 1998 and were close to it again a second time around before sidney came along. now they are back on top with crosby and malkin.

not much worse than the islanders situation.

im not saying tavares is the player mario was or at the same level as sidney. but hell give the team and him a shot.
