Taxes? What Taxes

I just got a message from the seller on ebay. He saw this thread on HI, now I feel kind of bad, but I wasn't trying to call anybody out in particular just wanted to clarify. He was nice enough about it and explain everything in detail.

From reading everyone's comments I have come to conclude that he should be charging tax on the shipping. The seller also provided me with GST number so I am just going to make payment.

Thanks for all your comments.

There was a dealer at the expo a few years back who was (illegally) charging tax, and got called out on it.

Wait ... what?

I didn't charge anyone tax at the Expo per se ... I just figured I was eating it for the biggest part, and then ran it through the till on Monday and backed the tax out and paid it myself.

I don't have to do that? A shiny nickel to someone who shows me where I don't have to do that!

As you are clearly in the tax business, you already know that you can still be a "registered vendor" and exempt for GST (see federal web-site). If you have one employee - you have to register with the feds and can still be exempt from GST requirements. Regardless, all businesses in Ontario still require a Vendor's Permit - the business/retail licencing/registration requirement in Ontario.

Happy Spring.

By "registered" I meant registered for GST. If you are registered for GST, and you make a supply of goods/services that are not either exempt or zero-rated, you are required to collect GST on your sales. Whether or not you achieve the $30K threshhold.
