Some people are just stupid. What the heck kind of rule is that? I say hockey canada should threaten to boycott all future hockey tournaments unless the COC, IIHF and anyone else associated with international hockey gets their heads out of their asses.

Meh, it's no secret that the IOC is run by a bunch of rubes. Here's a chance for Team Canada to go old school on the IOC's ***. Tell me you wouldn't want to see Canada rockin' these bad boys again...

Its not that they can't use a maple leafs. If this goes through as planned - they couldn't use the Hockey Canada logo. There are a lot of other maple leaf variations that they could use - busting out some of the vintage Olympic jerseys would be an option, or the 72 jerseys.

To be fair - Hockey Canada is a relatively new kid on the block. As an entity, they have only been around since 1994. Canada can still wear maple leaf jerseys - they just can't wear Hockey Canada jerseys.
Happened in Beijing - the Argentinian Football Federation basically told the IOC to stuff it - and after a couple of games and significant fines from the IOC finally relented. Pretty much every soccer team in Beijing were just wearing plain jerseys or just the flag on their jerseys to make it work.
Baseball Canada had to alter their logo on the caps and the sleeves slightly to pass muster in Beijing. So I don't see why Hockey Canada just goes with the classic Canada Cup jerseys instead? As much as those jerseys make a ton of money for the organization in the first place, the vintage jerseys will make probably just as much. Or they can just come out with a new logo - plaster them on the jerseys for 2010 - and then announce that those will be the new ones after 2010.
There are ways around it - but Hockey Canada just wants to have their cake and eat it too - just like any big bully around the block. For all the money they get from the government - when they really don't need it, that organization is completely self-sustaining - that money can be better spent with other organizations that really need it. But that's debate saved for another day

Not a big deal, the jerseys they do use will represent Canada in a positive light. They always have and always will.

In all honesty all could care less what logo the competitors are wearing on their chest. While it would be nice to see the Maple Leaf accross their chest - it is nothing more than a symbol, and has nothing to do with the performance. The IOC has instituted many rule changes over the years in hopes of a fair / level playing field -- one can only think that this is their lastest iniative in trying to take away the home field advantage.
As for the skinsuits for the skiers -- they should be red and white! same as when our swimmers compete in the Olympics -- I found it very frustrating during the summer games trying to figure out where our Canadians were when all the competitors were wearing black suits. It should be mandated that the countires are to wear their official colours - they wear them for the opening / closing ceremonies and should wear them throughout the competitions as well.

Very lame on the part of the IOC. Not particularly surprising given the politics of the Committee these days, awarding the 2008 Summer Olympics to a country with one of the the worst human rights records in the world. The judgment at the top is clouded, and this move is ridiculous. No matter, we've got a treasure trove of old jerseys to fall back upon should the need arise.

I think it's a stupid rule, who cares what team puts what on their jerseys?
However, I don't get how this is "putting Team Canada at a disadvantage in its own country." The crest of your jersey should not affect how you play.

Off topic but having to do with logos and such on jerseys, why is there a Canadian patch on the NHL jerseys for the Canadian teams? And, why should non-Canadian born players be required to wear that patch on the jerseys? They don't put a USA flag on all the jerseys of the US based teams, so why do Canadian teams have them. Makes no sense.

Very interesting question.
My guess is that it would be a team decision, much like a decision to wear a memorial patch or something. Why US-based team would not wear a USA patch, I am not sure. All I can think of is that a lot of Canadian hockey fans would be irrationally offended by guys like Crosby, Joe Sakic, or Lecavalier wearing USA patches, but by the same token we don't seem to mind Americans, Russians, Swedes, etc. wearing the Canadian emblem.
When it comes to hockey, Canadians tend to be hyper-protective. It borders on insanity, whereas Craig Conroy or Jason Blake wearing the a red leaf probably doesn't stir similar types of feelings in the US.
That does seem hypocritical, but that's my best explanation for why it occurs.
