I picked up this card in an almost 4-month roundabout way. It wasn't pretty.

I first saw this card pop up on eBay in May (Seller was COMC, so they were selling a card for a collector who had a card there with them). Because I am a Wild fan and have met the guy who played their mascot Nordy personally, I thought it would be a cool card to get. So, I bid what I thought was pretty high (but fair). One other person did as well. But then at the last second, two (0) Feedback bidders bid $1000 out of the blue and won it. The card didn't sell for that because my high bid was A LOT...A LOT...lower. OK, no problem. You win some and lose some. But two bidders bid the same $1000? Ahhhh...OK.

About 3 weeks later, the card popped up on eBay again (Seller was COMC again). Hmmmmmmm...I thought this sold? Why would it be listed again? The (0) Feedback winner didn't pay? 🤔

This time, at the last second, some (0) Feedback bidder bid $2000 out of the blue and won it by A LOT...again!!! So, I messaged the Seller (COMC) and said that this auction win was shady since this was the second time that a (0) Feedback bidder won with an outlandish bid. Almost like the COMC owner didn't want it to sell that cheap so they bid astronomically high with fake (0) Feedback IDs. COMC messaged me, and they said:

"I appreciate your message and your vigilance. I have escalated this to our eBay team. While I do not have any specific information I can share at this time, I can say we ban shill bidders daily and actively monitor our listings for activity that violates policies. As you note, the integrity of our auctions is hard-earned and we are constantly working to ensure all sales are successful for our sellers as well as our buyers. OK, fine...I lost it again and now it was sold. Or was it?

Anyway, I messaged COMC through eBay again and told them that I suspect this card's owner bid on the prior 2 auctions with a (0) Feedback ID. And the card would probably be on eBay again soon because of non-payment. I said the card owner was making sure it sold for a certain high $$ amount, or they'd keep it at COMC. COMC then messaged back saying:

"Thank you for following up on this. Is there a specific reason you think this COMC seller is shill bidding this item? How did you determine the seller was also the winning bidder? Thank you for following up on this. Is there a specific reason you think this COMC seller is shill bidding this item? How did you determine the seller was also the winning bidder? I appreciate your time."

I told them that it was pretty obvious with the (0) Feedback ID always winning with outlandish high $$ bids.

About 2 weeks later...just as I suspected....BOOM...it was on eBay again for the third time (COMC was the Seller...again). Ahhhhh...Der!!! This time I was beat out by another (0) Feedback bid...I suspect the card owner again. It's getting pretty obvious Sherlock! WOW!

I messaged COMC again telling them that this same card was won three times in eBay auctions with a (0) Feedback ID and the card is still probably owned by the same person on COMC. I told COMC that I bet it appears on eBay again soon.

A few weeks later, sure enough, it appeared on eBay again. This time it was not an auction, but rather with a more realistic BUY IT NOW price. A BUY IT NOW that was the price of what I originally bid back in May on the first auction. Instead of doing the BUY IT NOW, I went into the COMC site (I am a member) and bought the card outright. It saved me $30 from the eBay BUY IT NOW price! ;) And I got it away from the shady, unethical, shill bidding owner, which felt even better. I'm sad that the owner actually got $$$ for it, but at least he was stopped from getting the higher $$$ he sought by deceiving people by bidding on his own card for three different auctions. And I got it for less than I originally bid for it. I know the card owner's ID on COMC but will not say it here, in case of retaliation.

That's the story of the runaround to get this card...so now for the show and tell part.

This first photo from February 19, 2016, is Marco Scandella of the Wild with Nordy and my son Connor (who was 13 and battling brain cancer at the time). This was taken at the Minnesota Wild outdoor family skate at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis the Friday before the Sunday Wild-Blackhawks NHL Stadium Series game. Marco gave us tickets to that game and we sat with his mom in the stands. And the Wild won 6-1 and Marco got an assist. (y)

Connor is now 23 and doing pretty good. He is in a radiography program at the Mayo Clinic and graduates in December.

And here is the card...

I found footage of the 2023 NHL All-Star Game Mascot Showdown, so was able to photo match this patch (highlighted in blue). (y)

Thanks for taking the time for this post.

wow what a runaround to get that .....but at the end of the day it ended up where it was meant to be ...congrats on the beauty card

Glad it landed in the right place. Its wild to see COMC do absolutely nothing about shill bidding activities with their own inventory.

Glad the card finally made it home in your collection. Cool card and nice that you were able to photomatch it and have some fond memories attached to it as well. That is what the hobby is all about.

The games that people play! Great story Curt! Glad you finally got the card at a reasonable price lol. Super to hear that Connor is doing well.

I enjoyed reading this story...more importantly, love when our "little pieces of cardboard" actually have meaning that's more than just collecting because of design, etc. It's also a great testament how some of the true hobbyists get rewarded in due time, outside of the theatrics of auctions, re-sellers, investors, etc.

Cool card and glad to see it ended up with an appreciative collector after that ridiculous run-around. And great to hear Connor is doing well!

Happy to see that the card ended up with you, especially with the personal memories connected to it! It's unfortunate that we have to navigate through all the shenanigans that pop up in the hobby, glad to see that you were vigilant and kept COMC informed.
