This in preparation for WC 2010

They've moved up to 15th in the world from 32nd since '06 in Germany. The young guys matured, but they lost their old captain and goalie in the process and dropped, but then picked up their dead weight (Hakin Yakin) --- they're in a group at WC '10 that they have no business not moving out of...so fingers crossed this is a good World Cup for the Swiss. Their forwards are the strongest core I've seen out of a Swiss team yet, and supposing Frei and Vonlanthen (one injured during Euro '08 and the other injured prior to World Cup '06) can stay healthy...they'll have some deadly goal scoring prowess.

Matt,

Had no idea you were a fan of the Swiss team, haha. Unfortunately I'm not sure they'll even make it out of the group stages. They have a good young core, but any team that can rack up 10 wins in the SA qualification group has my respect - that's more than Brazil for a start. The Swiss also had a relatively straightforward group at the qualifiers.

I fully expect Spain to qualify after their first two games with 6 points. If that's the case and they field an understrength team against Chile in the last group, then the Swiss will have to beat Chile outright in the group stages. Other than Vonlathen, I'd think that the rest of the team might find it hard to adapt to the pace of 'Futbol' style. I'm thinking the Honduran team is a good one but they may get completely rolled over by these three.

As for me im a fan of the Portuguese, unfortunatly we get the honor of being in the group of death, and to better things off, by finishing second, if we beat ivory coast (1st likly going to brazil) we get to face the mighty Spaniards. Which in recent history has actually gone in our favour BUT the Spaniards seem to have finally shaken off their nickname as being a choker, That Euro win seems to have done wonders for them and i definatly see them making Top 4 in the world cup tourny. So here's to hoping that Portugal can beat the Brazilians who qualify slow but are ready when the games count. And hey who knows the Ivory coast is no pushover, Can we see a Brazilian meltdown?? lets hope so hahah.

Good tounry to all of you
JR
