The Calder Race - Who would you give it to?

Top 5 thread here- nicely done boys. Invoking the names Jackman, Pogge, and Tlusty clinched it :)

I'm still reeling from Rantanen not winning LY, I'll abstain from voting.

Great discussion, gents!

Matthews should get MVP votes as well as win the Calder. Last place team last year and now in a playoff spot while leading his team in points and goals and leading the league in a lot of the goal categories. Amazing year for the 19 year old.

He told me in Buffalo yesterday that he was surfing Hobby Insider, and wanted to live up to the hype.

Sorry, I had to. :bliss:

I couldn't be prouder to have AM34 as a member here. We will need to add the Calder Trophy icon to his profile in due course I'm sure!

So in his first season at 19 years old here is what Matthews has, and can accomplish;

Most goals as a rookie in Leafs history
Most points as a rookie in Leafs history
Most GWG as a rookie in Leafs history
Most goals as a US born rookie in history
3rd most (can move to 2nd most) goals as rookie in the past 25 years
Tied for 3rd in GWG this season

But yeah, let's give the Calder to Laine or Werenski.

Pretty sure his accomplishments in Leafs history and as a US born rookie don't factor into the Calder.

I think Matthews stats are more impressive since they are happening while playing with 2 more rookies. The Leafs also made a huge turn around this year and Matthews is leading the charge with points and goals for the team. He is playing against the other teams top lines and is a true 200 foot player, great in his own end. Laine is having a great year as well I just think Matthews have had a better year especially while handling the Toronto market and helping turning this team around. I love that most of his goals are coming 5 on 5.

I still like Laine's numbers better. He's only 3 goals (and 3 points) behind with eight games less played.

Still a great thread. I do believe it is a two horse race at this point. Murray, Werenski, Tkachck, other Leaf rookies have all had impressive seasons but I think it is a Matthews vs Laine coin toss. Both players have been amazing and done great things for their teams. Stats are so close in most categories that we are seeing the arguments about when the goals were scored during the game, the man power on the ice at that time etc..

I am still enjoying the lobbying that is going on and the passion for the player/team/sport that is on display.

I would hope that market doesn't factor into. I think seeing that a player from FLA has won it 2 of the last 4 years would show that market isn't a factor. Let's hope it comes down to a very close vote as I think it could go either way this season.

Still Matthews' to lose, 40 goals as a rookie, playing on a team that virtually nobody expected to make the playoffs. Kinda feel for Werenski - any other year and this was his to lose.

I had mixed emotions who to vote for, being a die hard Leafs fan, and all. At one point 3/4 in, I had Laine ahead of Matthews, but Matthews had a very strong finish, got to 40 goals, and just was so impressive helping his team get into the playoffs. Laine, disappeared down the stretch, and in my honest opinion, lost the Calder the last few weeks of the year. Had he kept up his torrid pace the last 10-15 games, I would have gave it to him by the slightest of margins.

Werenski had a fantastic year, and will be one heck of a player for Columbus for many years to come. In all honesty, he really is, and will be very close to both Laine, and Matthews in voting, IMO. Still up for grabs, but putting aside offensive numbers for a second, what other stuff Matthews provided his team this year was over the top. He played in key situations, took dozens, upon dozens of key faceoffs, and his puck pursuit is the best I've seen from anyone in a long time. It's like he has it on a string, and I didn't look up the stats, but he must be up there with the league leaders in takeaways? He also made countless defensive plays that set him apart from being just an offensive minded type player. I did see practically every minute, of every Leaf game, so I know what he did for the entire year, and yes there were times where he wasn't good, and somewhat invisible on the score sheet, but he did all the little things right during those spans, and earned every minute of his ice time.

I wish I saw more games that Werenski, and Laine played, so I could be a little more judgemental, but from the handful I did see of them, they were both very good, but I wasn't blown away. I did see a great display against Toronto one game that Laine had a hat trick, but in all honesty, he did absolutely nothing at all else the entire game, and other than the 3 goals he scored, which by the way is a remarkable feat, especially for a rookie. In fact I thought he was invisable other than the tallies he put up that night.

What's difficult to ignore, is how impressive Werenski was this year, especially being a defenseman, who let's face it often taken many more years to mature into a bonified NHL caliber player, but not this kid. This is why I think the voting will be incredibly close between all 3.

Again, as a Leafs fan, I am pulling for AM34 to win, but if he doesn't, I won't be upset, and can totally understand why one of the others did win it.
