The Calder Race - Who would you give it to?

So in his first season at 19 years old here is what Matthews has, and can accomplish;

Most goals as a rookie in Leafs history
Most points as a rookie in Leafs history
Most GWG as a rookie in Leafs history
Most goals as a US born rookie in history
3rd most (can move to 2nd most) goals as rookie in the past 25 years
Tied for 3rd in GWG this season

But yeah, let's give the Calder to Laine or Werenski.

lol, that just means the leafs havent had any great rookies up until now, but yeah matthews is running away with it now, good for him

You know the Leafs must be playing well when the Leaf fans cockiness, I mean confidence is back.

I'm just busting balls Leaf fans, don't get upset. I'm no Leaf fan in any way but I watch every game I can this year because they are loaded with young guns and a ton of fun to watch. I'm glad they are rebuilding the right way and having some success maybe a year or two earlier than most expected. A couple of dmen away from making a run like the Hawks have, as long as they can figure out all the contracts after the rookie deals expire.

We've been in the ****ter for so long it feels good to actually have something to brag out.

We had only uphill to go from here.. FFS we had Jiri Tlusty and Pogge touted as saviours at one point. #smh

To be fair,

So in his first season at 18 years old here is what Laine has, and can accomplish;

Most goals as a rookie in Jets history
Most assists as a rookie in Jets history
Most points as a rookie in Jets history
Most GWG as a rookie in Jets history
2nd Most goals as a Finnish born rookie in history (Can't really expect anyone to break Selanne's 76)
5th most (can move to 2nd most) goals as rookie in the past 25 years

:veryhappy:

You know what is most awesome about this thread? How hockey transcends nationalities.

We have tons of Canadians backing an American, Americans touting a Finn, etc. People are loving them for the players they are, not the country or team they reside in, or play for. (Well maybe a little)

SO good for the game, love it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Selanne accomplish all the rookie records as a member of the Winnipeg Jets? Therefore Laine is second in all of those categories.

Just messing about.

Different franchise, though he doesn't have Heatley's numbers from Atlanta (Assists and points).

I love both Matthews and Laine's game but am biased towards Patrik's laser for a shot. Tough decision, but I think Auston will win Calder. Great time for the NHL with a ton of young talent from all over the Globe :corn:

So true. Thanks for pointing that out Barrie. It is pretty cool!

So agree too

Hmmm... Matthews has 4 more points but has played in 6/7 more games. Also, Matthews most likley gets a lot more touches on the puck playing center to influence, and therefore, more opportunities to put up points. Matthews has taken about 70 shots more than Laine to score 2 more goals. With that being said, I think the fact that Matthews has been hot down the stretch when it matters (and Laine has been in a little slump), coupled with the fact he has handled the pressure of playing in Toronto means imo, that Matthews will win the Calder. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think we will be getting this type of talent and production battling it out for next year's award....

I love Matthews all around game, he is good in both ends and plays a 200 foot game. He got a wicked quick accurate shot. He certainly does a lot more than stand in the same spot hoping to hammer one timers lol

The Maple Leafs are 100 years old.

I think I'd give it to Matthews.... the stats are close enough that you could (easily) argue Laine.... but I lean towards the "tougher" position (C).

On top of that, Matthews has done it on a team that was last place a year earlier, and being a big part of turning them into a playoff team this year. His individual success has helped improve that team greatly - and while I wouldn't give an individual award out because of team success.... I would add that (and the player's direct impact on the team) to the mix of reasons why I'd lean one way.

One thing I'm tiered of hearing about though, is the Leaf Rookie records. I get it. They've been around for a century, and never had a really good rookie. Breaking a 30 year old record set by Clark just doesn't seem that impressive to me, but maybe I'm the crazy one?

Great for Leaf nation with Auston leading the way and him now definitely the #1 For the Calder but along with the COACH with some great seasonal output from Zaitsev, Brown, Nylander and Marner, the Maple Leafs have reached another level.

Padding the stats tonight, the Sabres have packed it in for the season it looks like. Played pathetic yesterday and today doesn't appear to be much better.

Leafs struggle in Buffalo. Great start and Matthews with another on but 3-1 now. I will celebrate when it's over lol.
