So first we find out Hossa is done for 17-18.

Next, Hjalmarsson is gone.
And to top it off, see ya later Panarin & Motte.

Umm, wow.

In summary:

Gone:

Hossa (injury)
Hjalmarsson (trade)
Panarin (trade)
Motte (trade)

In:

Connor Murphy
Laurent Dauphin
Brandon Saad
Anton Forsberg

Panarin for Saad... Both left wingers and both make the same salary ($6mil). I could see if it was a salary dump since they're up against the cap but this just seems weird to me. What am I missing?

Just saw the Panarin trade, that's crazy! Apparently they think Saad will boost Toews productivity back up? I mean, if it helps? Still that one surprised me a bit.

I already covered Hjalmarsson trade but I think that one is solid. Murphy is really underrated, younger, and likely makes less money which is big with the Hawks seemingly always in a salary cap pinch.

Not much in the way of clearing cap space. Saad has a bit more term on his contract. Maybe Panarin asked to be moved? (No idea why he'd want to) Maybe Saad gets flipped again today? I'm sure there's reasons. Maybe just a bit of a roster shakeup after the last couple playoffs.

Murphy's a bit younger than Hjalmarsson and a tad cheaper.

My daughter is going to be heartbroken over the Panarin trade. Oh well, guess it's time to plan a couple of trips to Columbus this fall.

question asked by CBJ beat reporter Aaron Portzline

Wonder if acquisition of Panarin is, in any way, a sweetener for Ilya Kovalchuk, who's been discussed by #CBJ. The two were teammates in KHL

I can tell you what the Yotes are doing at least - trying to get some wins this season.

Stepan, Raanta, Johnson, Hjalmarsson all in since the expansion roster freeze

Hawks going for longer term contracts, Murphy has 5 years and Saad has 4, iirc. Panarin and Hjarmalsson both up in 2 years and Panarin gets a raise?

From Rotoworld: Panarin and Saad both come with a $6 million annual cap hit, so this isn't about saving money in the short-term for Chicago, but Saad is signed through 2020-21 while Panarin can become an unrestricted free agent following the 2018-19 campaign, so Chicago is gaining some cost certainty here.

That makes sense then, one less guy to worry about signing in the short term. I think they lost the better player but when you're continuously bumping your head against the cap ceiling there are sacrifices to be made.

Also some grumbling me about Columbus kicking the tires on Kovalchuk since Panarin played with him in Russia so maybe there's that angle too.

From what our local sports talk station said, Toews and Kane approached Chicago management about brining Saad back. That's the rumor I heard. Not sure if there's truth to that or not.

Just hate these money hungry players. Kane/Toews at $10.5 lol. They had to figure there team would eventually be hurting since the cap has caught up with them now. Crosby doesn't even make $9M... Why? Because he cares about the team and not all about the payout. Just had to throw that out there.

The reason they make more is their contracts were signed later. The later things go on, the more money guys get. Look at the NFL. Each year someone becomes the "Highest Paid NFL Player" because each year more money gets tossed around. Just a matter of timing.

Yes, only Crosby cares about his team and every other player in the league is a money hungry whore. Good to know.

Look at LeBron James. He only signs deals a couple years at a time and he always has a player option for the final year, because he knows the cap is likely to keep rising and he can just opt out and resign for the new maximum if he wants it. He knows what's going on and he has the leverage to sign higher and higher max deals every couple of years rather than lock into a long term contract and watch other NBA players pass him in salary.
