The Cup or Superlative 3?

If you want more vintage stuff...Superlative.....

If you are looking for secondary market, rookies...The Cup

For me its not a decision, The Cup destroys Superlative..I saw dozens of cases broke of Superlative, its alright, some nice pieces...but no value unfortunately.

No value??? I opened 9 packs of Superlative, and I can guarantee you that I will make my money back, and then some, on every-single-one-of-them.

Now, I dare you to open 8 tins of The Cup and then tell me the same thing. I'll be the richer man, that's not even a question.

Between both, the only reason I'd go with Cup is if you're looking for rookies. Yes, you have the homerun possibility with The Cup. But they're far more hard to hit. I say Superlative all the way.

Care to explain why you think that way?

Ben, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You need to stop posting threads about it, take a big breath, save some money, and make the purchases for your self. There will always be two camps and two opinions, and to be honest, you are asking people to compare apples and oranges.

Every one of these threads will leave you no further ahead than when you started.

The Cup

ITG
dull recycled designs
bad photos ...if any ( from lack of NHL license)
perpetual secondary market flop
and from a more personal stand point, all the shameless promotion ITG gets because Price is present on the board translates into way to much fertilalizer do deal with in one lifetime

The Cup

awesome design / color and presentation - (I dont personally care for the 180pt stock but the cards look good)
licensed
best rc's made in terms of secondary market
all cards have secondary market strength
is more popular which also contributes to secondary market strength. ( limited logos and draft boards and a few others are sets seasonally built by collectors)
expanding yearly on their retired star inclusion
neg ---- redemptions

personally, after I opening superlartive I think "why the hell did I di that", after opening the cup I think "Nice"

save up the money and buy yourself one tin of the cup along with one book of superlative and then decide yoursely what is the best,

I haven't broke either but check YouTube for breaks of each. It will give you a better idea if you will be happy with your break than people here.

Good debate forming here. Keep it going and keep it clean.

This thread has made it to the Hot Topics on the main page.

So, how good are the cases that the Superlative cards come in? Is it worth it to open them up and put them in magnetics?

They come in standard top-loaders so if you've ever seen one of those before, you know how good they are. They are fine.

If they are PC, then I see no harm in breaking the seal and putting them in one-touches. However, if you do, your resale value will likely go down as some people won't touch them after they've been removed from the holders they come in.

Thy are simple toploaders. Unless you are planning on keeping the cards in your PC forever, you are better off leaving them in the sealed holders (that unfortunately are not the nicest things to view your cards in). As mentioned above, the resale value goes done a lot if the cards are not left untouched.

Superlative is old and tired. Not sure buying Cup is all that smart either.

There have been three full-blown Superlative releases, spaced at least two years apart. The Cup has had what, seven releases since the lock-out? The Cup is more old and tired than Superlative I think. I'm glad Superlative only comes out every couple of years because it gives me something to look forward to. If UD had the willpower to hold off The Cup for a year they could come back with a bang and it may not seem like the same old thing every year.

From what I've seen The Cup has better resale value - though on average every product you'll take a loss no matter what the set is, so I'm not sure if that's the best way to pick a product to bust. If I were to bust one, I'd go with Superlative - potentially 7 nice cards in there vs cup which is typically 2 base cards x/249, leaving only 4 cards of interest.

Thanks for the info about the sealed toploaders - personally I hate the seal, leaves an annoying and distracting blob at the top of my scans when I want to display them online. I pulled the only Sedin from Superlative v2 out of its original case and am thinking of doing the same when my v3's arrive. I will probably never sell my pc so I don't really care what this does to sale value - do other folks do this too? Do you guys actually care about the sticker if you're buying?

I've pulled all my Superlative cards out of the original case. I have about 50 of them.

The Cup is better, no questions about it. If you're looking a cheaper product, Superlative is an okay product.

If you're talking resale value, I opened two cases of Superlative at Expo and I figure at a minimum I am going to make approximately $1000 on each case over top of what I spent. With the Cup, unless you hit an ARP /99 or some monster hit, you'll lose.
