The Cup Rookie Discussion!

Matt: Yeah I was thinking Barkov too but didn't remember if he was 99 or 249.

C55: Hedman...good call.

Excellent choices! Of the young and un proven players with talent, who do we think has a chance to join these big boys?

So who makes the cut for 99 this year?

Matthews
Laine
Tkachuk
Werenski
Nylander
Marner
Puljujarvi

Which leaves Aho, provorov, konecny, vesey, mantha, and a slew of other great young players at 249. I too think tarasenko is the most sought after BECAUSE...1 of only a handful of cards Tarasenko has signed for upperdeck. Makes it that much more rare whereas all the other players mentioned have lots of autos in circulation with the exception of maybe Karlsson.

I think it'll be:

Matthews
Laine
Tkachuk
Nylander
Marner
Mantha

I don't think Puljujarvi wil get a /99 because he didn't play enough and didn't do enough when he did. And as for Werenski, while as a player he deserves it, being a d-man in Columbus I think precludes him from the honor.

I think Matthews, Laine, Nylander, Marner and Tkachuk are for sure.

I include Mantha because he's a Red Wing. Although I could see that spot going to Vesey too as another O6 team player.

Will UD give three Leafs an ARP /99? Not sure for sure but if they do I think it's justified.

I like your picks but I would change just one. Dylan Strome in for Nylander.

As an ARP /99? He wasn't even on my radar for that. You think UD would give him that distinction over Nylander? I don't see it. :snapout:

I don't see UD giving 3 ARP #/99 to Toronto. I could be wrong but that is the fun in guessing. Arturri Lehkonen might get a look too.

No one is talking about Braden Holtby and his ARC #/199

My choices for 16-17 /99

Matthews
Laine
Marner
Werenski
Tkachuk
Nylander

I think Draisatl, Pastrnak, and Matt Murray have a chance to end up in the top 10. Maybe Forsberg or Johansen. Barkov doesn't score enough and plays in probably the worst market...

Holtby might be up there if there was a patch.

Werenski gotta be there. How often does a calder nominee not get a /99?

They should just do all of them out of 99. Every product is going high end and they need to start tweaking the Cup if they want it to keep it their top product and justify the cost. Last year The Cup shared the limited 99 spot light with a half dozen other products. Two of which went even lower based on jersey number.

I believe they may have to go to at least 8 cards last year was 7. This years rookie crop to me has more depth so 10 cards may make sense. Also they should just drop the next tier to 199 or even 149. Lets be honest 249 is a bit of a joke these days. Much like a 90's card #'d to 10,000 was a decade ago.

More often than not it seems:

2016 Ghostisbehere
2015 Mark Stone
2014 Palat and Johnson
2013 Gallagher and Saad
2012 Henrique
2011 Couture and Grabner
2010 Myers (Winner)

Going back to /199 and /249 notable players not mentioned yet:

- Kris Letang
- Jeff Carter
- Thomas Vanek

I totally agree with Letang and Carter but Vanek seems to have fallen into hobby irrelevance.

what is your thoughts about Ladd?

I would have to agree the Tarasenko is my favourite right now, as I love that year's set....and he is a pretty awesome player.

With that said, as far as my PC goes, I will give the nod right now to Draisaitl. It's pretty hard to find a nice one right now at a reasonable price, but luckily I picked this one up a few months ago for practically nothing:

Ghost, Stone, Saad, Couture and Grabner all had their rookie cards before their nomination, I think it plays a big role.

As far as autos, Versteeg, Simmonds, Holtby, Reimer would be my picks.
