Been a solid two weeks now after the much awaited Cup release and my LCS still have all this tins from the first day.

Is it safe to say that his 549.00 sale price is about 150 above his cost?

I recently spoke to a LCS owner in a city 3 hours away and his quote was "I sold my Cup tins for 375.00 so my customers could afford to open something sweet"......

Both card shop are or claim to be "direct" with Upper Deck....

My LCS says his "cost" is way above 400.00 per tin, is he full of :corn: or what?

I refuse to pay 549.00, I spend way too much money in his store to be the one "keeping the lights on" every month.

His cost is likely above 400, probably closer to 450 or 475 would be my guess. There is no way that the LCS 3 hours away from you is selling at 375...unless he's forking out money from his own pocket every time he makes a sale.

I had no excitement over the cup this year at all. The design is boring, it's over priced, the rookie crop is average at best, and the NHL is locked out as of right now so theres a good chance the rookies you're going to pull you won't see play in the NHL at all this year.

Cup prices

I paid for two six pack cases the day they went live from a non direct hobby shop $4550.00 that's about $379 per box

That is a great deal for you (any Rangers Limited Logos or Honorable Numbers for sale pm me).

But I also agree with the above comments as well.... The Honorable Numbers design this year sucks!

Limited Logos are the same, just hope for a nasty patch to save the day..

So either my card shop is just not giving me a break and basically telling me my business is not appreciated, because I doubt he HAS to sell them at 549.00 a tin...

The local card shop that I go to had them for $400/tin. He re-ordered more from out East and his new cost was going to be $425/tin which is still good imo.

To the o.p., knowing how life works, his tins will never sell for that price and inside the tin, it'll have a 1/1 shield or something crazy.

Yeah for 425.00 I'd open 6 of them suckers.... I think I see the real issue here, my LCS is just losing my business, he's being overly greedy on these tins.

Price is obviously all over the board. I know we offer the product to our regulars for one price, multiples at another price (like above), cases even less and the walk ins or single tins are more.

I can tell you the reorder was nearly +$70. We were lucky enough to score from both distributors so we can keep prices down as I don't think the product will be successful at some of the inflated numbers we are reading on here.

It is a popular product but price point can slow even the top products.

Sorry - you have no idea what you are talking about.
The direct US LCS cost is below $400.

Period.

My bad...I was basing that on prices I've seen from several stores here in Canada which started at about $500. Maybe I just shop at the wrong places

If I walk in and you charge me more than your regulars (assuming I find out or figure it out, and it's not that tough) ....I never darken your door again and you just lost a potential regular.

Original Cost for The Cup was $319.00 in Canada......retail is 400-459...from what ive seen.

Heard it has gotten (retail) to around 559 in some circles, taxes NOT included.....

But with tax it is right at or around $500/pack here.

Worst post of the year right here.

Of course people who spend a lot of money at a specific shop get better prices. It's the way of the world.

If someone who comes off the street only looking for Cup once a year shows up and then disappears until the next Cup release - you can't expect to get the same treatment as someone who supports a shop year round.

Regulars are the lifeblood of a hobby shop - if you're only there for one thing and show up only that one time a year - then you shouldn't expect the little things that regulars get for their support

As a business it is hard to speculate whether a first time customer is going to turn in to a potential long-term customer. It makes sense that people that continue to buy at your store are provided with a few kickbacks here and there. Most big businesses out there have some kind of loyalty program. If I was selling a product to someone who has never been in my store I would be reluctant to provide them with the same price that I gave to a customer that has been shopping at my store for years. I am sure word travels when someone buys a box for X amount of dollars and their friend would want it for the same price.

As for the price of the Cup, I have seen it fluctuate all over the map. It is unfortunate that some shops sell it for higher compared to others, but that's business. It can definitely be frustrating at times for collectors when high end products are released.

I suspect some US dealers are held (or believe they are held) to a SRP for products in order to maintain status with Upper Deck. I sincerely doubt a major internet dealer wants to sell for 570, if others are selling the same product for 400-something.

thanx for the vote.
I believe I have been given that honor from you two times before.
Next time I need an opinion I'll be sure to contact you so you can give it to me

Why would anybody put up with that. The world (and the hobby world) is way to small with all the online forums and stores to pull that kinda crap. You guys are saying you need regulars to survive. Somebody buying a pack for kicks isn't going to busting the cup now is he. There is a pretty good chance, I would say, that he is a collector. You think he won't remember that when he is looking for his own little local card store....I would.
YES, I think regulars should get some percs, a break here or there, but pick your poison
I find out you sell the cup $50/tin cheaper to some customers, you never get add me to your list of regulars.
All of you who own a store, or have worked sales or retail, even service industry should have a better grasp on the true "way of the world"

I will tell you that from a retail standpoint (not cards - but custom clothing), that there is no way I give first time customers the same consideration that long time high volume customers get. After 40 years in the business I will tell you that nearly every new customer that told me he was going to become a great customer and wanted price considerations - never panned out. And nearly every customer that shops you based on price will leave you in a heart-beat for the next seller that offers him a better deal at the moment.

It is naive to think that everyone pays the same price for a product in almost any given retail setting. Car dealers??? - get real! if i buy 3 or 4 card every 5 years from a certain dealer - do you think he gives you the same pricing when you walk in and want to buy 1 the very first time?? My wine & spirits merchant,?? I guarantee he gives me better prices than he will give a first time customer, or one that buys from him once every three months.

And actually you are wrong about thrill seekers buying a high end product like The Cup. it happens far more often with top end product than an $80 box of cards. the thrill seeker is lured by the very thing you oppose - the high risk aspect of The Cup. two of the three LCS's in my area say that they sell more Cup to other sport buyers than they do hockey patrons.

I feel completely opposite than you..... I am pissed when I am not treated better by a store where I spend a lot of money
