My hometown of St John's,Newfoundland recently had the pleasure of having the Great One himself Wayne Gretzky visit our city and province and left many a child and man-child(myself included) pleased as punch with his breakfast engagement arranged through TD Bank. Not sure if any toutons and molasses were on the menu!lol
He had a Q & A session with fans and admirerers alike as part of this event. A huge success as over 800 fans flocked to breakfast with the man who transcended the game forever. I've never seen so many 99 jerseys in my life. Me being a 22 guy and all but I digress..for now.
Fortunately for me I happen to work in the hotel where he was staying and had the privilege of having an ink drawing I created of him and Mike Bossy signed by his Greatness. A co-worker actually had it signed by Wayne(to whom I will be forever grateful! Thank You Pat!!) who she said commented.."hey! There's Mike!" which I thought was just amazing as I am a huge Mike Bossy fan. The fact he recognized himself and his chief rival of the early 80s I just thought was aces! Coincidentally enough I met Mr Bossy back in September of 2007 and it was a dream come true. Mike signed a jersey(one I was wearing at the time!)and had a long (and from his expression) and enjoyable review of my card collection (his own hallowed history in cardboard!) before posing for a couple of photos with me. I didn't get a chance to speak to Mr Gretzky myself but I did politely say good morning to him as he and his handlers or entourage led him through the lobby earlier in the morning. There was definitely an unmistakable aura about him. Now I just have to arrange to get Mike back to St John's to complete the signing session that Wayne started! No wonder Mike was always slightly bitter at Wayne's accomplishments!lol Talk about a white whale project! Just wanted to share in my brush with hockey immortality...again! Hope you enjoyed.
