Who do you think is the most undervalued and overvalued player in the hobby right now?

Over-valued - Ryan Nugent Hopkins

Under-valued - Cody Hodgson

Please feel free to contribute.

Hard to pick just one for each, but your choices are pretty good. I keep waiting to get my RNH Young Gun to finish my set off. I hate paying 100-120 for the top YG to find out it's only half that - at best - a season or two later. RNH had a bad year, hopefully he can rebound next season. Hodgson had some hightlight reel plays this year... another questionable move by Vancouver.

As far as undervalued goes, Cody Hodgson is near the top of the list. One of the most productive rookies of the 2010-11 season, but since he plays on a average at best team in Buffalo he gets over looked.

I feel that if you have hung onto Kyle Okposo cards for the past few years that they will pay dividends in the future. I hope so anyways!!

It seems to be Evgeni Malkin doesn't sell as high as he should considering he's an elite player, but then again I don't watch his card sales too close.

I think that Henrik Lundqvist and Geno Malkin are quite udervalued.

When I was collecting King Henrik's card I was really surprised by how low I was able to get for his patch & auto /10 cards compared with many others, even with cards with both of my current PC-guys often gets much more expensive than his cards....

Cards with those most overvalued retired players for now like Irbe, F.Potvin, Linden sells easily 3x-5x more than King Henrik!

RNH and Carey Price of the current active platers are so ridiculosuly overhyped and their cards sells at a level without a relation to their actual expertise.

Over valued: Carey Price, good goalie but not yet great and probably sells better than any goalie in the NHL.

Undervalued: Isles second line (Okposo, Bailey, Nielsen) and i'll even throw in Moulson. Moulson for what he has done is sooooooo undervalued. Okposo and Bailey are finally starting to relize their potential and could be really sought after in a couple of years when the Isles are really going good!

I need definitions to properly answer this. Are we looking as compared to a certain future value and how far off is that future? Are we comparing to hockey skill and/or popularity? Are we just saying...whose cards are going to go up fairly soon and whose cards are going to go down?

His cards are worth a fair chunk now but I would expect Toews cards to continue to increase in value - that guy is a a machine and is getting more and more respect by the day. Could likely say the same thing about Tavares and Stamkos as well.

Cards that will likely decrease in value - current Russian superstars. I'd expect the slow erosion of guys like Kovalchuk and Malkin. Datsyuk and Ovy may do OK but if Ovys game falls off again next year I can see those cards droppnig as well.

Every rookie = overvalued

This too. Never understood why people will pay so much for cards of players who have not proved anything. Aside from a few exceptions (Young Guns, Cup RPA's, Ice Rookies, SPA Future Watch) none of these rookie cards will be worth anything in the future because they are so mass-produced, I don't care what the player does during his career. If Gretzky had 20+ rookie year cards I still think supply would outweigh demand and they'd be relatively cheap. This is hockey, not basketball or baseball who have way bigger followings.

I've always wondered why Martin St. Louis consistently fails to get hobby love; his cards seem undervalued when compared to his play. Looking at the last 5 years and comparing his stats to his teammate Stamkos:

-year/player/point total:

-12/13: St. Louis 60; Stamkos 57 (same number of games played)
-11/12: St. Louis 74; Stamkos 97 (Stamkos played 5 more games)
-10/11: St. Louis 99; Stamkos 91 (same number of games played)
-09/10: St. Louis 94; Stamkos 95 (same number of games played)
-08/09: St. Louis 80; Stamkos 46 (St. Louis played 3 more games)

St. Louis had a worse year in 11/12 but look at the year Stamkos had in 08/09. Sure Stamkos has more goals, but you still have to admire someone who sets up the goals. I know that Stamkos is the better player, but look at the sold prices for a 11/12 Panini Dominion Peerless Patches (2 color) card:

-Stamkos: $50 to $55
-St. Louis: $19.99

I suspect the Stamkos collectors outnumber the St. Louis collectors by about 500:1 (?) so that will cause Stamkos cards to sell for more...but it still seems strange that St. Louis isn't collected more.

overvalued--------->IGINLA, he is not that elite player anymore, yes he has a loyal following, but considering the amount of cards out there, they should be a lot cheaper
undervalued-------> TAVARES, when I can score a cup auto for 30ish bucks, heck yah.

Undervalued: Tavares

Before I got in the hobby I didn't understand the infatuation with rookie and rookie year cards. But now I do. Best explanation is that after that one year, every card that gets produced is the same. If rookie cards are mass produced then at least it is confined within one period of time and has a expirary date.

There are a lot more to be said and everything is debatable but that was just my quick explanation as someone that shared the same opinion only a year ago.
