I think its blatantly obvious that the world is under a crisis right now where we are running out of resources and are getting closer and closer everyday to global warming.

The hobby is so wasteful, wrappers to wrap packs, boxes to box the packs, sometimes a styrofoam at the bottom of the box to fill up space, and then another plastic wrap to wrap the box (not to mention the piece of foil tape to seal the box)

If we get to high end products, like Ultimate, you double the amount I stated above; with the Cup its even more, and don't even get me started with Superlative (what kind of ratio is a bible compared to a pack of cards, so wasteful).

Seriously, we always complain about how if the card companies reduce their packaging, we would save alot of money. (I.e if the cup didn't have that stupid tin, it would cost us less).

But what about the world? its so wasteful to produce so much packaging when we as collectors end up throwing it all out. Card companies need to realize that not only we, as collectors, save money, but by reducing packaging, they help contribute to the world. Kill two birds with one stone, agree?

This, to me, sounds like a microscopically tiny fraction of an issue that might not even exist. Let's not get reactionary here.

I agree to a certain extent. However, if any hobbyists are smart, they recycle instead of throwing all that stuff in their garbage...

I agree with you the world isn't running out of resources the people that own the resources are just getting greedier I happen to be a welder at a company where we do all petrochemical piping for all the big companies ie. shell, chevron. texaco etc. and business has never been better all the over time you want and guaranteed work for at least 5 years in to the future. As for global warming I live in cottage country ontario and my furnace is still coming on at night I do my part for the environment but I think GLOBAL WARMING is a political invention as is natural resources shortages we have been under control of the big oil companies for way too long they control the sources and the supply and if they need to push there bonuses up with a good quarter profit mark they shut down a plant here a plant there and the whole world is still thinking oil comes from dead dinosaurs we all need to wake up! If the world is warming up then it's probably natural seeing as the earth is millions of years old and has warmed up like this hundreds of times in the past and natural resources are just that NATURAL the earth produces them has been for millions of years so there is NO shortage were but puppets in this world and the oil companies and the politicians are pulling all of our strings

Holy rant lol

Global warming isn't just things getting hotter.

Global warming is an environmental change, meaning more extreme weathers.
It's still going to be cold, it's still getting hot, but overall, the average temperature of the planet is getting hotter, it's really unarguable, the numbers are there.

As per the hobby being wasteful, i agree a lot,
I notice it most at the expo redemption booths where you see garbage bags full of wrappers.

I really don't see any way around it,
you can't package cards in mini boxes that are disposable, it'd cost way too much to a) produce and b) pack out.

I agree with what you are saying execpt globing warming..complete b.s... but I wont get started on that. I thnk that the foam at the bottom of boxes is a complete waste and that the should make sure that the package is recyclable.

Global Warming is in fact a political invention!

The fact is that's how the earth it from the get go there wasn't many people, and less resources to use, now the earth has to adjust to more and more people living here by millions a year, so yeah it changes as does time!

I'll have to agree with you but we only have say 150 years of "recorded weather patterns" and like I said the earth is millions of years old this may be a cycle it has gone through many times in the past NO ONE knows and the issue has been turned into a political mechanism to gain voters so it is arguable and so I shall rant :)

I have a somewhat heretic-like concept...how about we ask for the cards to be packaged in wax paper  Maybe even throw in a stick of gum for chewing pleasure!:eek:

No need to thank me. I come up with these genius ideas frequently :)

As far as the waste goes, I think you have a point - whether it is a sizeable factor or not, theres a lotta garbage involved in the hobby.

can't recycle Styrofoam, or the plastic wrappers, only thing that's blue bin-able is the box.

though it is PART of the hobby (or it is), a lot of paper goes into making the cards already does it not? That being said, with the amount of paper being used to produce the hobby, they should atleast cut down on the wrappers and styrofoam

For example, I remember in SPGU this year it was 6 packs, the box size was exactly the same as SPx yet they stuck a styrofoam at the bottom to fill up space. Wasteful? yes. They could use less paper to make a smaller box (instead of being lazy and using the same box dimensions), not to mention it will be lighter to ship (That actually doesn't cause a whole lot, but with everything added up it does)

Basically with everything added up, the shipping, the gas to transport everything, the labour: anything that makes the cases more heavy will in turn make it cost more and use up more resources.

That is hard to believe, but why do you think naturalists invoke the theory of "if people did a little bit to help the world, it goes a long way"

umm what?

The world is not warming up, the world is under abnormal temperature and weather conditions. People tend to think it is warming up because of "global warming" but actually it comes from the fact that the polar ice caps are melting due to the abnormal temperatures up in the north (and somewhat in the south) because CO2 and all the other chemicals from power plants and cars are entering the atmosphere. Why was this not affected before? Because forests are being cut down as we speak. Basically plants use photosynthesis to absorb the carbon (which is why they are known as carbon sinks).

With forests being cut down the soil is destroyed, and the soil contains the most carbon. So tree's do play a big part in global warming... as in.. WE NEED MORE OF THEM. I am not trying to give a biology lesson here, these are well known scientific facts.

A good example is when we had the expo here, it was snowing in the middle of March. It wasn't hot, but its known as EXTREME WEATHER CHANGES. Not to mention the polar ice caps melting causinsg sea levels to rise. But I guess its hard for some people to believe (even from scientific facts) until more forest fires emerge, more floods and its snowing in the middle of June.

I'll be honest -- that last post reads like a glue-stick collage of big-media buzzwords, versus an actual understanding of the issues. Of course, nor is the viewpoint that it's entirely a "political invention" much better.

But indeed, it's easier to just blame "global warming" for anything going wrong environmentally and be done with it.
