Gotta agree with Kenny on this issue. I see no reason why # 66 can't be worn by another player. He is not playing for the Pens. I believe the only number to be officially retired from all NHL teams is # 99. Correct me if i'm wrong....
 
I'll agree as well, unless it is for Pittsburgh, it should be available. Should be up to the player if he wants to listen to everyone chirping at him for wearing it. Same goes for all other numbers as well, regardless of who may have worn them previously.
 
Put yourself in Spurgeon's position - how would it look if you went into an NHL training camp as an unproven rookie and started carping about the number they issued you? Probably wouldn't reflect very well on him.
 
You really should not wear 66 or 99, I know Gretzky's number is retired throughout the league, as it should be, but Mario's number should be too, after all if he played in as many games as Gretzky, he would have surpassed him in points.
 
Ok... So everyone that is wearing the number 19 should give it up becuz Yzermans number will be retired and he was the longest running captain????
 
Too many other great players use 19, Sakic and Trottier to name two, but no other decent player has ever worn 99 or 66, it makes it a lot easier.

who cares what numbers the players wear, they could wear 3 digit numbers for all i care
 
If players in the NHL are still allowed to wear 4 and 9 then 66 should be no problem at all. No disrespect to Mario, but I think the numbers Orr, Richard, Howe, Hull wore hold more meaning to the NHL and it's legacy then 66.

On a side note, I think my buddy Matthew Spiller agrees with you Brian, looks like he laid the smacketh down on young Mr. Spurgeon. Maybe he likes Mario, or maybe Wayner was standing up for his buddy and told Spills to plant him.
 
I don't see anything wrong with it either... #99 is the only number that should be and probably ever will be retired league-wide. We can't start retiring everyones numbers that were excellent players, otherwise no numbers will be left!! Thats my $.02

66 is Mario Lemieux and 99 is Wayne Gretzky. The numbers are very unique and are instantly recognized by everyone in the hockey community as being theirs. Numbers like 4, 19, 9 etc have been used by a whole slew of players. Who first comes to mind with 19? I bet we get at least 3 different players. 66 & 99 are the two most recognizable numbers in the game.
 
hmmm... the only people that are standing up for #66 are penguins fans....

I say the league retires #77!!!

I noticed that too that the pens fans are griping. Hey Black N Gold what you say we add #4 Bobby Orr's number because we all know he was the greatest of all-time(Please no arguements about this) Thank -You ;)
