This week in your collection.

I'm told that the West Coast of Canada FINALLY got the comics today (supposedly, some storm in Ontario delayed the truck, and then it broke down in Alberta causing two 24 hour delays.)

I should be able to pick up the following

Robin #181
Birds of Prey #125
DCU Holiday Special 2008
Mighty Avengers #20

and I picked up (from eBay) Snapdragons #3

Hopefully, I'm able to get next weeks on time, because if not next week, I might end up getting the Dec 24th, 31st and January 7th orders all at once.

This week, not much as I didn't have a lot of time to browse the shelves:

Wolverine Origins 31
Ultimatum 2
Batman 683
Secret Invasion Requiem one-shot
Fables - 1001 Nights of Snowfall tpb
X-Men 505 variant I missed earlier

Santa brought me

Conan Chronicles TP # 7, 9, 10
Bone "Complete edition" Not sure the correct title
Harley Quinn HC "Knock Knock jokes" or something like that haha

If anyone has an extra Conan Chronicles #8 PLMK as chapters shows the book as sold out:(

This last week I went a little overboard.
First from eBay was:
The Invisibles book 4

The rest of the trades were due to a local shop closing--it's part of a 4-store chain and they are just integrating a shop at the mall into a newer, bigger shop downtown. They had everything on sale from 20%-40% to minimize the stuff to move, so I grabbed a few things...

X-23: Innocence Lost
The Sword vol1
Y: The Last Man vols 6 and 7 (slowly making my way through this one trade by trade!)
Fables vols 1 and 3
Fear Agent vols 3, 4, 5
The Northlanders book 1

I read The Northlanders in one sitting and loved it. So the trip today to pick up the weekly loot garnered the following:
The Northlnders 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
All Hail Megatron 5A, 6B
X-Men: Magneto Testament 4
Punisher War Journal 26 (not a title I usually buy, but it's for my Rhino project)
Batman 684
Kick-*** 5
Wolverine 70
Fantastic Four 562
Ultimate X-Men 99
Batman Cacophony 2

my Dec 31st pick ups

Fantastic Four #562
Final Crists Secret Files
Justice League of American #28
Justice Society of America #22
Marvels: Eye of the Camera #2 (I'm really enjoying this)
Teen Titans #66

This week...

Only a couple of new *new* issues this week, but I did pick up some recent things I had forgotten about.

Fear Agent tpbs v1 and 2
Final Crisis 5 and var (it's not new, but I realized I didn't have it)
Secret Invasion 8
Venom Dark Origin 5
Wolverine Manifest Destiny 3
Cosmic Size Fantastic 4 one-shot
Invincible Iron Man 9
X-Men Noir 2 and var
The Stand: Captain Trip's 4

My first run of the new year

Spider-man Noir Variant
Secret invasion War of Kings 1 shot
Punisher war journal #26
Gears of war #3
Punisher Dark Reign 1 (Norm osbourne cover)
Dark Reign New Nation 1 shot
Dark Reign War Machine #1

Now I got the Punisher #1 but was looking for the variant and all the 12 copies in thestore were the same yet i am told hey should be 50/50 can anyone confirm this?

This weeks haul
Booster Gold #16
Final Crisis #6
Gen 13 #26
Love and Capes #9
Nightwing #152
Titans #9

An introduction of sorts .. I'm not even sure if I'm 'in' the comic book hobby per se. I have always had an interest in comic book characters - a natural development of a TV child I guess. I watched all the good ole' stuff that used to be on - The Amazing Spiderman, X-Men, Justice League, Fantastic Four, Superman etc. In fact, I still watch the Justice League when I can in HK, haha! As for comic books - I never really paid much attention to them.

Ever since moving to the UK however, the only hobby show there is around here (there's only one table that deals with sports cards), has masses and masses of comic books. I started flicking through them and the interest really started from there. Since then I've still been relatively quiet with the hobby, with the only big purchase being 'The Incredible Hulk' 181 - which features my favorite character, Wolverine, in his first comic cover appearance (he has a bit in 180, but not on the cover). After this week's pickup, however, I might start to really look into the world of comics. So without further ado ... this week's pickup:

The Amazing Spiderman #583 Obama Cover Variant First Edition Print

I'll be back in a month with whatever I manage to pick up from the next show as well :)

I have been seriously considering giving up ALL of my monthly titles and picking them up as TP/HC or on ebay as lots. Prices are going up and it seems like the quality of the comics are going down.

I agree with the premise of prices up, quality down. However, for me, many of my titles are not traded automatically ever x # of issues, which prevents me from switching over - As well, I still prefer the monthly read, however, I am switching over what I can from monthly to trade where I can for cost savings and ease of reading.

The idea of eBay purchasing in lots appeals to me, but with the cost of shipping to Canada from most US sellers, I may as well continue with the monthly issues from my LCS.

Just for a interesting tidbit, Jan '06 my Diamond order form had 49 items listed on it, my Jan '09 order form (the one due last week) had 14 with one that I may cancel (Dark Avengers) that comes out this week.

Trades are so much easier and cheaper to collect. They store so nice on a book shelf plus there is also a huge savings from comic bags and boards. I live in a rural are so I have to get my comics shipped in, I can buy my trades at a huge discount from chapters.com and they have free shipping.

I agree that I will miss the monthly read and it will suck having to wait for the trades. However my supplier has been really unreliable over the past few years so I am usually recieving 3-4 months of comics at a time regardless. I looked at the pros and cons and for me its a lot better to buy the TP. The hardest part for me will be ending some of the comic runs that I have been collecting since the 80's which include every issue.

I'm lucky that I play hockey with the owner of my LCS - so as long as hockey is on, I can get my comics every Wednesday night.

Like you, I enjoy the monthly read and have decent length runs, I still can't switch my longer runs (Flash, etc) over to TPB as it just doesn't get reprinted for sure. However, with Fables, The Boys, and in the past Strangers in Paradise, Bone etc - you know that every 6-8 issues you're getting a trade. Part of it also depends on what I discover something, Bone was almost over by the time I got into it - SiP had just went to Image, so it was easy to go to trades. Fables justs reads better, so that was easy to do as well, and you're absoultely right, with Chapters (or Amazon.Ca), trades are just so much cheaper.

Well looks like I will continue picking up my regualr issues. Talked to my supplier and he already has ordered my books for the next few months. I am obligated to buy them so I might as well just continue to get them and keep my runs intact. I am sure I would regret stopping them and end up trying to track them down on the secondary market.

Sorry, since I missed out on replying to these several posts--I'm getting to where my stack of unread issues is growing out of control. I was always behind but never like this. I still haven't read Ult F4 or X-Men in probably 3 or 4 months now. When I carve out time to read through some stuff I find myself sticking to one-shots (since I'm months behind on most titles) or trades.

Even the trades I'm behind on. Last night I just finished reading v1 of The Sword, one that I started maybe 6-weeks ago.

The new discoveries are killing me, too. Kevin mentioned Fables--well I just started grabbing the trades of that, and Fear Agent as well. Something like Fables I'll stick to the trades since there are too many back issues to try and get. A) I'm not interested in them for investment reasons, so I don't want to pay the $ for the first however many are relatively expensive to the cover price; B) I'd lose interest in trying to pick them all up; C) Space is getting to be a serious issue as I look on down the road at all the titles I pick up.

Another sign on how time-challenged I am--I still haven't added the titles I picked up last week or this week, something that I used to do every week like clockwork. :(
