Thoughts on Canada Post Strike

I have 20 packages I need to send. Only 1 package worth over $100 which I can send with UPS.

Surprised this hasn't made more progress so close to Christmas. I am sure that a lot of Canada Post employees are also surprised. It's the entire reason they strike close to Christmas. Last time they did this, November 20th they went on strike and by the 22nd they were mandated to go back to work. So.. what's going on now? Going on 12 days now and 30 days until Christmas.

Bingo, same as USPS.

Not quite the same. USPS is directly funded and run by the US government. Canada Post, as a crown corporation, is technically an independent entity; they do not receive funding from the government at this time.

I am surprised too that this is not solved yet. Black Friday is coming very quickly. I usually buy some sealed boxes during the Black Friday sales. I already have a decent stash, if they don’t make a deal soon, it will be an opportunity for me to save a bunch of money! :)

Actually, USPS has not been run or funded by the government for a good long time. It too is an independent entity; the last time it received any funding was an emergency loan/fund during the pandemic. Otherwise, the only funding it gets are from service and products.

I sit corrected. That said, as I understand it the USPS is prone to much more direct intervention from government than is Canada Post.

Thought I would share this direct update from Canada Post 25-Nov-24:

CUPW strike continues with negotiations supported by special mediator

Negotiations continue with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) as the Corporation marks day 11 of CUPW’s national strike.

Negotiations have been supported by a special mediator since Monday, November 18. Talks continued through this past weekend. We have continued to work to find agreement on changes to our delivery model to better serve customers with weekend delivery and more flexible staffing during the week.

The union has had other priorities and therefore the parties remain far apart. That means we have not yet reached agreements for the Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units.

Understanding the impacts on your business

Given the national strike, mail and parcels are not being processed or delivered and some post offices remain closed. Service guarantees continue to be impacted for items in the postal network.

The longer this strike continues, the greater the impact will be when services resume and we work to stabilize operations. Processing and delivery will be challenged due to the shutdown of our network and customers should expect delays.

Unfortunately, we now enter the biggest online holiday shopping week of the year with the postal system shut down for the millions of Canadians and businesses who rely on it. We understand the impact on your business and will continue to work toward reaching new agreements.

Securing our future

To help reach new agreements, Canada Post has put forward a number of proposals and solutions and provided feedback on CUPW’s demands.

The company’s proposals have focused on improving delivery services for customers, growing the Parcels business and maintaining or enhancing what is important to our employees. It is critical that the company builds a path forward that allows Canada Post to better serve customers in today’s dynamic ecommerce delivery market.

Stay up to date

We know you need certainty at this critical time of year and the union’s national strike continues to impact your business. We are committed to providing you with timely updates and the details you need to make informed decisions.

We will post regular updates at canadapost.ca/negotiations.

Another update today. I read this as the feds will be stepping in shortly....just my opinion:

Talks with CUPW grind to a halt with no movement on changes required for Canada Post’s future

Canada Post is considering its options to move negotiations forward as talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have ground to a halt on key issues critical to the Corporation’s future.

The parties have been working with the assistance of a special mediator since November 18, but progress has been limited to minor items. Despite the current situation, we remain committed to the bargaining process.

Throughout these negotiations, Canada Post has put forward detailed proposals to bring more flexibility to its outdated, mail-based delivery model. These changes are necessary to better compete in the parcel business, better serve Canadians and drive much-needed revenue growth.

However, after not responding over the past several days, CUPW has just informed us, through the special mediator, that it will not be responding at all.

From Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon:

“It’s not a secret to anyone that Canada Post is built to deliver letters. But Canadians don’t send many letters anymore. It has to be transformed into a business that, yes, delivers letters in a sustainable way, but also a business that delivers parcels in a profitable way.”

MacKinnon also said sending the matter to arbitration is more complicated than it was in previous labour disputes given those fundamental issues.

“It is difficult to envisage a situation where you could find an arbitrator who could adequately cover the issues that are at hand. These are differences of vision currently at the table that are hard to bridge using conventional arbitration,” MacKinnon said.

“While I would never rule out any option in the future, what I would say right now and for the foreseeable future is if this agreement does not come together at the table, there will be no end to this labour conflict.”

He's not wrong. Canada Post is behind the times. Of course, lettermail has to continue but they need to put much more focus on parcel deliveries. There is growing competition in the marketplace and CP is being left behind.

Now Canada Post temp laying off striking workers. This has to move the needle abit more to get a deal done.

As somebody who had a family member work for Canada Post up until quite recently, I can tell you that there will be no hurry to get this over the line by CUPW. This is an organization that thrives on inefficiency and which has a large segment of workers who actively discourage hard work.

Whether they realize it yet or not the Canada Post Union and workers have slit their own throats. It will be interesting to see what if anything emerges from the ashes.

Never mind that this is illegal. And will almost certainly result in no consequences for Canada Post or their leadership.

Exactly, their intention was to hold all of Canada hostage for what they want. Its clear now that is not the case.

The ironic thing is because of the strike the majority will have no idea they were laid off because the record of employment letters aren't getting processed by Canada Post during the strike.

It's actually not illegal as long as when the strike is over that anyone not terminated for cause is offered an equal position back. Either way when an agreement does get made it will include that the union is waiving any type of legal action for this.

I think it might be done because they will try and use a scab crew to put pressure on the union that their jobs are not impossible to be filled temporarily. Their spin will be that a lot of people need mail delivery to survive as a lot of elderly still rely on cheques and what not being delivered as their sole income. If Canada Post didn't cave in before today which is the busiest day of the year for online shopping it's probably going to last a long time.
