Thoughts on Canada Post Strike

If no deal is done by the end of the week, the government has to legislate them back to work, right?

Justin can't do this as unlike previous stoppages, he doesn't have a majority government and would need the backing from either Orange or Blue, and Orange has already said they wouldn't support this.

So he'd have to ask his arch-rival (Blue) to back him and I'm sure Blue's response would be "what's in it for me?".

That could be an awkward, challenging conversation to have...

NOTHING is happening in Parliament right now. They've been stalled for 6 weeks and counting over the Liberals' refusal to follow an order of Parliament. And rather than anyone try something to break the deadlock, it's been shouty circus time.

Well when I was in the Carpenter's Union and the Drywallers Union in 2017 (or 2018?, maybe even 2016!) when they all went on strike I was told the longest you could possibly strike for is 6 weeks and then 1 week lay-over. So... see you all in the new year. My eBay will be in shambles by then. I'm sure I will be refunding a lot of people and be out some of the cards (all low-end) so that will be a lot of Christmas Presents I will be handing out this year! Thanks Canada Post!

And they have the audacity to be like 'Oh don't worry children, you can mail Santa anytime! It will get there..." Lie to the children and also help ruin Christmas for some.

They are destroying Canada Post. Many people and businesses are turning to electronic transactions and alternative delivery services. Why would people come back to Canada Post after?

I heard from a friend who just got a PayPal chargeback for $2,500 for a Gretzky PSA 5. Tracking says it’s in Canada Posts possession in Ottawa. The seller claimed not delivered yet and got his money back. I bet when they resume shipping he will get the card and my friend is SOL! End this strike already I say!!

OOF.

It's generally by far the cheapest main stream option for parcels that are less than 5 pounds. It's a drastic difference for businesses. Canada Post can excel but their biggest issue is the union. If they could fix that problem they would likely be able to turn to a profit.

Not sure if anyone is answering phones but you can request a parcel redirect to have it sent back to you as long as it hasn't been delivered. There is a fee for it but its better than eating the cost of losing the card. I would be on the phone at 8 am when the strike is over requesting this.

I shipped two bubblers out yesterday with UPS.

From Calgary to Vaughn Ontario it cost $37.72. My buyer was giddy to receive the 2 cards so he offered to pay the shipping whatever it was, I told him I'd have paid $12 so he topped me up by $25. Not typical, I know. But he did receive it less than 24 hours later. I got a text from him and he says "Lanny and Wendel are on my front porch" I reply, "Actually? Or in spirit?" LOL. I couldn't believe how fast they got there. But after paying $37 neither of us were complaining.

The other package went from Calgary to New Hampshire and was under $22. Shipping to anywhere in the US (at least from Calgary) with UPS is the same price, whereas within Canada is different by destination. In this case, as I've paid $18 to ship to the US before with CP, I just sent it off too for the extra $4

Now Puro and UPS not taking more shipments because of the backlog. This is getting super ugly.

CUPW is shooting themselves in the foot here. Beyond cards, people who depend on the mail for their cheques aren't getting any and travellers waiting on passports to travel this Christmas are being forced to cancel plans. That's not how you win good will from people.

Not anywhere close to this level, but I sent out a low end Crosby RC the day before the strike, it was not tracked or anything since it was only like $25. The buyer opened a claim to say it was not received but they knew it was because of the CP strike and just wanted the money to buy something else. They said they contacted eBay who would cover me. I contacted eBay (via chat) who said that was not true and not to issue the refund. They would work to extend the time and let the buyer know they would need to wait. Less than 2 days later I get the charge back saying they have sided with the buyer and the funds would be taken.

I disputed the charge back and provided the chat reference number and eBay did refund my money at least. In the end though, the buyer is going to get the card and his money back. Shady.

Would love to see an end to this soon, there are work arounds but they are not ideal for me at this point.

I dropped off some packages at my local Chit Chats location on Friday and they were overwhelmed. This is getting bad. Pretty soon, we won't have any options.

Also note when this does end , it will not be back to normal for a long time. I work for a printing company and we tried to get some CP mailing cages from one of the local mailing houses, and they could not give us any because theirs are all full waiting to go to CP. There will be a huge influx of mail the moment the strike ends that will probably take months to recitfy.

My best,

Ken

Small thing but it would be nice if eBay would stop harassing me to leave feedback for items that are clearly stuck in the mail system.
