In these game, we show you a hockey card that is focused on a player with just a hint of the goaltender in frame, and you have to identify the goaltender.

Ok, the most prominent thing about this Devils goaltender is that the jersey number starts with a 2, which you would not expect. It's what caught my eye in the first place.

Name that goaltender!

Mike

We have a winner! But let's do the detective work.

Okay, we start with that rogue #2. As pointed out, the only Devils who wore a #2 in this time period are Bob Sauve and Martin Brodeur. Sauve is too soon for this photo as he retired before Randy Cunneyworth became a Whaler. So that points to Martin Brodeur.

Except...Brodeur didn't play a game until at least 2 months after this card was issued. But that doesn't necessarily rule him out. The photo could come from the pre-season. But what eliminates him is the equipment. Brodeur did not wear Vaughn pads or use a Louisville stick at this point in his career. No other photos from this period match for him.

But we still gained a clue - could this photo be from the pre-season? It sure looks like Cunneyworth doesn't have the 75th anniversary patch on his jersey, although it would be partially obscured by his glove. Ironically, the answer to this question comes later in the set! Observe:

Scott Neidermayer is wearing #48, a number he never wore in a regulation game. But evidently he did in the pre-season. And look who's behind him: Number #29. And now we have a huge clue: we can see his mask. And that mask we can identify as belonging to Craig Billington.

The trick here is that Billington always wore #1...except in this training camp. Sean Burke was a holdout, and Burke wore #1. When it became clear Burke wasn't coming back, Billington reclaimed his number. See this photo to match the mask, stick, and pads:

You'll notice Billington's Vaughns have a streak of blue in them. This is likely because he spent the previous season with the Canadian National team and the 1990-91 color scheme included blue.

Congrats to mclean_m!

I would like to say that I did the detective work you described to arrive at Billington. But if I'm being honest it was mostly a lucky guess.

I have to say, I find your posts fascinating, especially this type where several cards are used to arrive at a conclusion. I would love to see more of these types of posts! Early 90s card info never gets old! :)

Round 2

1991-92 Pro Set - [Base] - French #445 - Kris King

See that goaltender behind Kris King? That is neither John Vanbiesbrouck nor Mike Richter, the only two goaltenders credited for playing all minutes in the 1991-92 season. So who is it?

Name that goaltender!

Mike

Greg Millen... dressed and never saw action.

Spectacular!

Okay, let's do our detective work.

King is featured wearing the 75th anniversary patch, so this is an official game. We're in Boston Garden, as evidenced by a jersey in the stands, and if I'm being completely honest, because I recognize the Volkswagen ad. (I am a Bruins fan, despite my handle.)

The Bruins and Rangers played in Game 1 of the season in Boston, so now we know the game as well. Hockey reference can tell us that Vanbiesbrouck played the entire game, so now we can ask, where is Mike Richter? He's holding out. He won't rejoin the team until Game 3, also against Boston, this time in New York.

So who is the goalie? When we look to Binghamton, we see three goaltenders, but none of them match the guy we're looking at. Mark LaForest uses the same pads, but he doesn't wear a cage and he's never worn #29.

And at this point...you just kinda have to know. Greg Millen was one of the few goalies who wore #29. He also wore those Brown pads and he wore a cage. The Rangers acquired him while Richter was holding out, but once Richter returned, there was never a chance he was going to play. Binghamton didn't need him either. Eventually, he found his way to Detroit for a short spell...and to my home team, the Maine Mariners of the AHL.

Very well done, jaywings19.

Very enjoyable Mike,

Guess that goalie? Plus you featured ex Whalers and a possible Sean Burke sighting - whats not to like

More please

I'm not sure if I can find any as good as those first two rounds, but we can still try.

Round 3

See that blocker in the lower corner? That's all you need to name this goalie!

Mike

Grant Fuhr :)

Correct. Grant Fuhr. Thought I might suck in a Daren Puppa guess as both goalies catch right handed.

But this is really just a segue to discuss just how many stick brands Grant Fuhr used in his brief time with Buffalo. The photo Mircom73 posted shows him using a Cooper. But he also used a Koho, a Christian, a Sher-woood, and a Titan!

On a sidenote, Grant Fuhr collectors must have a lot of fun. He played for so many teams, had so many masks, and there are so many cards of him making acrobatic saves.

Mike

It is Jim Craig, who played 23 games for the Bs in 1980-81. This did not merit him a card, despite his high profile. He had to share one with Rogie.

Round 5

From the mask alone, name that goalie.

Mike
