Topps makes a return to hockey... kind of...

Topps sells Match Attax cards in the UK for the English Premiere League, very popular with kids (same target audience as stickers).

They also tried it this year with baseball here in North America, not sure how popular that release was.

Both the soccer and baseball releases were close to the standard 2.5 by 3.5 inch format on fairly cheap cardboard stock.

The puck shape for hockey is something new, and with the UD exclusive for "cards", probably the only way they could get NHL/NHLPA buy-in on the release.

At least Topps recognizes the market for these stupid "cards"...idiot dealers who STILL sell the crap they had throughout the early to mid 90s at those outrageous early to mid 90s prices.

"Each starter pack box contains 12 Puck Attax game cards and two Black Foil game cards as well as one Gold Foil game card and one Platinum Foil game card."

For anyone who knows about the other sports in this series...are the foil cards parallels? Or are some players "black foil" players, and other players "gold foil players" etc?

Where's my Advil? :P

Player collectors gotta know. The quirky, BS, oddball junk like this can produce some of the biggest pain in the a$$ missing links on an otherwise nearly complete list.

Agreed. Playoff 1-on-1 comes mind immediately.

I like that Topps is coming back in though. I think our year-end debate over licensing just got a lot more interesting.

I think these look cool, the shape of them reminds me of the Katch coins (although those were made of metal). Does anyone know if there is a checklist out for this yet?

Cheers
Connie

For the german soccer series they have (black-looking) parallels of some players. They are named "Star-Player" or "Matchwinner". Maybe Topps will do this similar for the hockey cards.
