Fired are GM Dave Nonis, Interm Head Coach Peter Horachek, and three assistants. All I can say is good riddance.

Time to take broom to dressing room. Crazy how well they played last night. Too bad they were down right lazy previous 30 games.

Its never good to hear about someone getting fired, but change was necessary.
Now I don't believe they need to gut the team completely but there are a few folks who are better served in new environments. I for one do not want to get rid of Kessel. He has tremendous value in the right situation and line mate combination.

As much as I like Phaneuf, I think he is better served elsewhere. I sure hope they don't part with Reilly, Kadri and a few others.

I have a feeling once the ball settle and we know who is picking in which order, then we will see a plan of attack put in motion. I don't see the point in doing anything until you know your draft order.

Btw does anyone know when the draft order will be determined?

I agree 100% with all of the above...Kessel needs someone to give him the puck so he can stop shooting off the hashmarks...as for Phaneuf, too bad he can not regain his form from his first two years in the league he was awesome then as for the rest aside from Reilly if the deal is good go for it!!

I'm not sure dealing Kessel is the right thing to do, despite all his issues. He's a 30 goal scorer, and those don't grow on trees. The first line was the most potent line in the entire NHL not too long ago, I'd like to see if they can get that back one more time before they dismantle everyone. I'd like to see them spend some major, money on the defense, if possible. Move out Phaneuf, Gardiner, and Lupul. Maybe even Kadri, plus one goalie? Booth was the only guy that gave a rat's arse, so he deserves at least a year contract, and 3rd, or 4th line minutes. They are going to have a very good player added this summer that could be NHL ready, whether it's McDavid, or likely Strome, and they have some talent in the AHL to fill out the roster. A 100% rebuild is not entirely necessary. Just another excuse to be bad for many more years. They also need some team toughness added.

Again, for what seems the fifty-third time I have asked this question to leaf fans:

How much of the salary and/or cap hit for Kessell or Phaneuf are you willing to retain in order to get them out of Toronto?

Good move by Shanahan. They really should start from scratch in the locker room too. I'm on the trade Kessel side. He's not really appropriate for a rebuilding team. He's in his prime and not necessarily the best role model (i.e. conditioning, playing in a system, etc...) or mentor for young players. But he is an excellent offensive player, who could fetch a good return on the trade market. He would only help the Leafs win more games when the franchise should be focused on getting higher draft picks.

Phaneuf was in a very different situation in Calgary. For the Flames he was a #3 D on the second unit, he wasn't responsible to shut down the other teams top players. They also wanted him to be physical and fight the leafs won't let him fight. Calgary also used Phaneuf as the #1 option on the PP, their main pp was phaneufs one timer. The Leafs go to Kessel, Phaneuf don't shot he passes to Kessel. If Dion was making 4 million and a second line D who hit, fought and was used properly on the pp no one would consider him overrated.

I don't think they will have to retain any on Kessel, phaneuf I'd guess 2 million at least.

This franchise is starting over and all of kessel, phaneuf, bozak, and lupul, need to go. Everything tied to the Burke/nonis era need to be removed.

They can't get rid of everyone. They still have to spend to the cap floor, and they also need someone to put people in the seats, and justify the ridiculous prices charged for tickets, and everything sold at the arena. If their plan is to get Stamkos down the road, then moving Kessel is justified. Phaneuf can go, and Lupul, too. If Kessel goes, they better get a 30 goal scorer in return, or it's gonna get ugly in Toronto. Getting draft picks for him just doesn't do it for me. I'm not interested in watching an AHL team for the next several years.

I think the upcoming draft will make a huge difference. What if they get McDavid, or even Strome. Finally a top center that Kessel has been without for years. There aren't a lot of 30 goal scorers in the league, so trading one away for prospects is a slippery slope, unless you can get a franchise guy like McDavid in return.

It's the players that sucked...not the coaches. Nonis did make some terrible signings, but, in the end, the players are what let that city down. There have been bad teams in all sports throughout the years, but this one is among the most dysfunctional I have ever seen. No sense bringing in new coaches if they keep the same dead weight, heartless players that are responsible for such an embarrassing season.

Kessel is way to soft. Its great to score 30 goals but if you are on the ice for 50 goals against than you need to go or change. They tried to change him in the second half and he end up soft, not scoring and still with the leagues worst +/-. He has value to other teams so I say move him. He is the problem not the solution!!!
